In a common binary contract, a “Yes” position bought for 70¢ pays $1 if its stated condition is met—30¢ gross profit before fees and taxes—or pays nothing if the condition is not met. The price is a changing market quote, not a guarantee about what will happen.
How does a prediction market work?
Participants buy and sell contracts whose value depends on an event’s outcome. Each contract should specify the condition being judged, when it expires or resolves, what evidence determines the result, and how settlement works. The contract’s wording and rules—not a general description of the market—control the outcome.

For example, imagine a binary “Yes” contract that costs 70¢ and pays $1 if a specified condition is true. If it resolves true, the holder receives $1, for 30¢ gross profit per contract before fees and taxes. If it resolves false, the holder loses the 70¢ paid. This is an arithmetic teaching example based on the CFTC’s illustrative rain-contract example, not a live quote. The CFTC describes common event contracts as Yes/No contracts with a fixed payout, often $1, that expire at a stated time or when an event naturally concludes (CFTC guidance).

A 63¢ Yes price means the contract is quoted at $0.63 before fees. For a simple binary contract, traders commonly read that price as an implied probability of about 63%. It is a market convention, not the event’s objective probability or a promise that the event will happen.

Check what kind of quote you are seeing. A screen may show the best bid, best ask, midpoint, or last trade, and these can differ. The bid is the highest resting price a buyer is offering; the ask is the lowest resting price a seller is offering. Their difference is the spread. A midpoint or last-traded price may not be available to you now, and a large order may fill at several prices rather than at the first quote shown. Kalshi Pro’s glossary explains these quote and order-book terms (Kalshi Pro glossary).
How do orders, liquidity, and trading activity affect execution?
An order book lists buy and sell offers at different prices and the quantities participants are willing to trade. The quote you see is only useful if there are counterparties and enough available quantity at that price.

- Limit order: Sets a price or better. It may remain unfilled if no participant is willing to trade on those terms.
- Market order: Seeks execution against available offers. It can consume multiple price levels, so the average price may differ from the first displayed quote.
- Spread and depth: A wider spread or limited quantity near the best quote can make a position more costly to enter or exit.
- Volume: The number of contracts traded during a period.
- Open interest: The number of contracts still open. It is distinct from volume and does not, by itself, show how easily you can trade.
These measures describe different parts of a market. Neither a volume figure nor open interest alone guarantees that a contract can be bought or sold quickly at a favorable price.

Can you sell a contract before the event resolves?
Some markets allow a holder to trade out before settlement. In that case, the position is sold at the price available at that time, subject to execution, available counterparties, and trading costs. The sale does not change the contract’s final settlement rule; it closes or reduces your exposure by trading with someone else.

A successful exit is not assured. The price may have moved against you, and there may not be enough buyers at the quote you want. If you hold through resolution instead, the contract settles according to its stated terms.
Are all prediction-market contracts binary?
No. Yes/No contracts are common, but the CFTC also describes possible designs with combined Yes/No contracts, several defined outcomes, or ranges that can pay partially. Payouts, expiration, and settlement depend on the specific contract. More complex structures may attract fewer participants and have comparatively lower liquidity; that is a possibility, not a universal rule.

What should you check in the contract rules?
Before interpreting a price or estimating a return, read the individual contract terms. Confirm:
- the exact event wording and any threshold or cutoff;
- the source of information used to resolve the event and who makes the settlement determination;
- the payout for each possible outcome and the expiration or resolution timing;
- fees, commissions, taxes, and other costs;
- whether early exit is permitted and what trading conditions apply; and
- the venue’s rules, eligibility requirements, customer protections, and jurisdiction-specific access.
If an event is unclear, a resolution source changes, or a dispute arises, there is no single process that can be assumed across all markets. The individual contract rules govern how that contingency is handled. The CFTC says customers in the regulated-market framework should receive transparent terms, including payout, prices, and how and by whom settlement determinations are made (CFTC guidance).

What regulation and risk limits should readers understand?
The CFTC describes regulated event-contract exchanges and intermediaries as subject to requirements involving applications, examination, market integrity, and customer protections. Those statements concern the regulated framework; they do not establish that every platform or market has those protections, is available to every reader, or is permitted in every jurisdiction. A regulatory filing about a rule change is not proof of a venue’s current access, eligibility, or status.
Oversight does not make a trade safe or remove the possibility of loss. The CFTC’s customer guidance states, “All speculation involves risk.” Read the contract and venue rules, understand costs, and verify current eligibility and protections with official sources before trading. The CFTC also warns that unregistered entities may offer little or no protection.
