If you want a phone to control a TV or air conditioner, start by checking that the exact model has an infrared (IR) blaster—not just a remote-control app. Xiaomi’s official materials confirm IR support on the POCO F9 Pro and POCO M6, and document the REDMI Note 14 Pro+ 5G in troubleshooting guidance. Those examples establish feature support, not a ranking of the best phones overall: current prices, stock and comparative phone performance are not established here.
What an IR blaster does
An IR blaster is hardware that sends infrared remote-control signals. A compatible app uses the transmitter to send commands to appliances, much like a conventional infrared remote. Xiaomi says its Mi Remote app works through a phone’s IR blaster; installing a remote app alone does not give a phone IR hardware.

How to choose the right IR phone
- Verify the exact model: Look for an official specification, support page or product listing that explicitly confirms an IR transmitter for the regional version being sold.
- Check appliance compatibility: A transmitter is only useful if the remote app offers a working profile for your appliance and brand. App support can vary by device.
- Check local availability and the full phone fit: Confirm the variant and seller listing in your market, then compare price and the other phone features you need. The official IR confirmations above do not establish prices or broader quality rankings.
What devices can a phone’s IR remote control?
Xiaomi’s Mi Remote setup and supported-devices guide lists TVs, set-top boxes, DVD players, smart boxes, air conditioners, projectors, cameras and fans as appliance categories. It names Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Haier, Videocon, Micromax and Onida among brands. These are categories and brand examples in Xiaomi’s guidance—not a guarantee that every model will work. Xiaomi cautions that some devices are unsupported, so check your particular appliance.
Set up Mi Remote and test your appliance
- Open Mi Remote and tap Add remote.
- Choose the appliance category, such as TV or air conditioner.
- Select the device or provider when prompted.
- Point the phone at the appliance and test the power control. If the command works, continue using the on-screen controls; if it does not, see the checks below.
The labels and flow above are from Xiaomi’s Mi Remote instructions. A compatible phone and an available device profile are both needed; a listed appliance category by itself does not guarantee compatibility.

If the remote command does not work
- Aim at the appliance: Point the phone’s IR emitter toward the TV, air conditioner or other device while sending the command.
- Clear the transmitter: Remove a case or other obstruction that may block the emitter.
- Confirm the appliance uses IR: Xiaomi advises checking that the TV or air conditioner supports infrared remote commands. An IR blaster cannot control a device that does not accept IR commands.
- Recheck the profile: If aiming and removing obstructions do not help, check whether the app supports your specific appliance. Xiaomi notes that some devices are not supported.
