Downloading it does not make it yours to keep if your membership ends.
That rule differs from the Extra and Premium Game Catalogs: catalog titles can leave the service on a published end date, ending access even if your membership is still active. The details below reflect PlayStation’s US guidance checked October 7, 2026; offerings and availability can differ by region, device, plan, and account settings.

How do you claim a monthly game?
Sony adds new monthly games each calendar month. Choose a title during its displayed availability period and add or download it to your account. Sony does not give one fixed claim deadline that applies to every monthly selection, so check the dates shown for the game you want.
- On PS5: From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus, go to Benefits, choose Monthly Games, select a game, then select Download.
- On PS4: Open PlayStation Plus, choose Monthly Games, highlight a title, then select Add to Library > Download.
- Remotely: Sony says you can start downloads through a web browser or the PlayStation App.

What does claiming a game give you?
Claiming adds the monthly selection to your PlayStation game library so you can download and play it as a Plus benefit. It does not turn the game into a permanent purchase. Play access depends on having an active membership; Sony’s US terms also say downloaded subscription games are playable while the subscription is valid and the game remains available in the service.
In other words, an installed game file or library listing is not proof that you own the game outright. Sony sets out the active-subscription requirement in its PlayStation Plus Usage Terms.
Which PlayStation Plus plans include monthly games?
All three US membership tiers—Essential, Extra, and Premium—include monthly games. The higher tiers add separate benefits, and having a tier that includes catalog access does not make every catalog title a monthly game.

Do monthly games expire?
Monthly-game access is tied to an active PlayStation Plus membership. If the membership ends, Plus benefits—including access to monthly games—are unavailable while the account is not an active subscriber. The public guidance describes access as lasting while you remain an active subscriber; it does not spell out every account’s technical process for restoring access after resubscribing, so do not assume a particular library reactivation flow.
Catalog games have a different expiration rule. Some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have announced end dates and are removed from the service. A title leaving a catalog can end access even while your membership remains active. Sony also says add-ons purchased for a catalog game become inaccessible if the membership expires or the base game leaves the service; those add-ons can be used again after you resubscribe or buy the base game.

Monthly games and catalog games: the key difference

The distinction matters when deciding whether a game is simply unavailable because your subscription lapsed or has left the service altogether. Sony’s PlayStation Plus overview also describes monthly updates; check your local PlayStation site for current regional terms and availability.
