It is a subscription entitlement: you can play it while your PlayStation Plus membership is valid and the game remains available in the service.
Canceling normally stops the next renewal rather than ending access immediately. Your benefits continue through the payment period you already purchased. When that period expires, monthly games, online multiplayer and online storage are disabled until you renew or buy the game separately.

What a PlayStation Plus monthly-game license actually is
When Sony labels a title as a monthly game, the subscription grants a right to use that title; it does not transfer ownership of the game to your PlayStation account. Downloading the installation file, launching the game, or seeing it in your library does not change the license type.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus Usage Terms state: “Games downloaded to your console are playable as long as you have a valid subscription and the game remains available in the service.” That sentence supplies two conditions. Your membership must be active, and the title must still be offered through the service. A local copy on the console is therefore not proof that you own the game.

This differs from a normal PlayStation Store purchase. A purchased game has a separate purchase license that remains on the account, while a no-cost monthly game is tied to the PlayStation Plus benefit that made it available.
Cancellation is not the same as immediate termination
Turning off automatic renewal usually changes what happens at the end of your current term, not what happens today. Sony’s cancellation guidance says that benefits continue until the end of the previously purchased payment period. If you paid for a one-, three- or 12-month term, the relevant date is the end of that paid-through period, not the day you switch off renewal.

Because the exact expiry date controls access, check the subscription’s end date in Account Management before deleting games or changing the account used on the console.
What happens when the membership expires
At expiry, Sony says you lose PlayStation Plus benefits including monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer. The installed game may still occupy storage, but the subscription license will no longer authorize play. The official terms do not promise a universal offline grace period; behavior can depend on the game, console state and license checks.

Do not assume that starting a game offline will permanently bypass the check. If the console later verifies that the membership has expired, the title can become unavailable. Keeping the installation is useful only if you later renew or purchase the game; it does not preserve access by itself.
Renewing later: when access comes back
Resubscribing restores the subscription benefits. An eligible monthly game can become playable again without downloading it a second time if its installation and account license are still recognized. If the game was removed from the service, is no longer supported, or is unavailable for your account or region, renewal alone may not restore it.

- The membership is active rather than merely scheduled to renew later.
- The title is still offered as a PlayStation Plus benefit in your country and tier.
- The console is connected so it can verify the current license.
Deleting and reinstalling the game cannot create a license that the account no longer has. Reinstallation is a troubleshooting step only after the membership and title availability have been confirmed.

Monthly games, Game Catalog and Classics Catalog are different benefits
Essential, Extra and Premium all include the monthly-games benefit. Extra adds the Game Catalog, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and streaming-related benefits. These catalogs are separate from the monthly-game entitlement and can change over time.

A title downloaded from a catalog should not be treated as a permanent monthly game. Catalog access is governed by the tier and by whether the title remains in that catalog. A title’s removal can end access even before the end of your paid term where the relevant service rules allow that removal.
DLC, add-ons and in-game currency after expiry
The base game’s subscription license and its related content are linked. Sony’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ says that if membership expires, or if the content leaves the service, “you’ll also lose access to the DLC and add-on content associated with that game.”
The Usage Terms also cover add-ons, virtual currency and other consumables purchased separately for a PlayStation Plus game. After a lapse or removal, those items cannot be used unless you renew PlayStation Plus or buy the same base game from PlayStation Store. Buying an expansion alone does not replace the missing license for the game it requires.

Examples
- Monthly game plus purchased expansion: The expansion may remain listed on your account, but it is unusable while the subscription-provided base game is locked.
- Monthly game plus virtual currency: The currency is not a workaround for the expired game entitlement; it follows the same restriction.
- Renewal: If the game is still an eligible service title, renewing can restore use of the associated add-ons.
- Buying the base game: Purchasing the same title from PlayStation Store can restore the basis for using the add-ons, subject to edition and region compatibility.
Items you keep permanently
Not everything obtained through PlayStation Plus disappears. Sony explicitly distinguishes redeemed PlayStation Plus packs and avatars, and games bought with a PlayStation Plus discount. Those are redeemed or purchased items, so cancellation does not remove them.

How to cancel without losing paid time
Use Sony’s subscription controls in Account Management, or the subscription settings on PS5 or PS4. Choose the PlayStation Plus subscription and turn off automatic renewal or select the cancellation command. The wording can vary by console software version and region.
- Open the account or console subscription-management screen.
- Select PlayStation Plus and review the displayed next payment date or expiry date.
- Choose the option to cancel or disable automatic renewal.
- Confirm the change and save the displayed end date.
- Continue using monthly games until that date, then renew or purchase any title you want to keep playing.
Canceling does not convert the game into a purchase. It only prevents another term from being charged. If you need access for a trip or a long offline period, do not rely on cancellation timing as a permanent license; Sony does not specify one universal offline grace period for every game and console state.
Common situations and the correct outcome
“I added the game to my library but never downloaded it.”
The result is the same as a downloaded copy. Adding it to the library records the subscription entitlement, not ownership. You need an active membership and continued service availability to download and play it later.

“I canceled today, and the game still works.”
That is expected when the paid term has not ended. Cancellation normally stops the next renewal while current benefits remain active through the displayed expiry date.
“The game is installed, but it shows a padlock.”
The console is not accepting the subscription license. Check the account, membership status and title availability first. If the membership expired, renew it or buy the game. Reinstalling cannot replace an expired entitlement.
“I renewed, but my DLC is still unavailable.”
Confirm that the renewal used the account that owns the DLC and that the base game is the same edition and region. Also verify that the title has not left the service. The terms make service availability a condition of play.

“The game disappeared before my subscription ended.”
Service availability can change, and Sony does not guarantee that every game or feature remains available. A title removed from the applicable service may become unavailable even though time remains on your paid membership, particularly for catalog-style access.
Account, region and availability limits
Eligibility can vary by country or region, console or device, account type, age restrictions, parental controls and subscription tier. A game shown to one account may not be offered to another. Check the account’s local PlayStation Store and subscription page rather than relying on a friend’s library or an old promotion.
Sony also reserves the ability to change games, online features and other benefits, and service availability is not guaranteed. Those qualifications matter when deciding whether to buy add-ons for a monthly game or rely on it for long-term access.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you want permanent access? Buy the game instead of relying on the monthly entitlement.
- Are you only stopping renewal? Turn off auto-renewal and record the paid-through date.
- Do you own DLC for a monthly game? Keep the base-game license active through renewal or a separate purchase.
- Are you moving between tiers? Treat catalog games separately from monthly games; a tier change can alter catalog access.
- Is the title missing after renewal? Check account, region, tier and whether Sony still lists the game.
- Are you buying a voucher or subscription code? Confirm the code’s region, account eligibility, term length and redemption conditions before payment.
The simplest rule is to classify every item in your library: subscription entitlement, catalog access, or permanent purchase. Only the last category is independent of PlayStation Plus.
