The number and arrangement of Pt sites, their bonding to the semiconductor, and how the surface changes under illumination can all matter. No single Pt oxidation state, particle size, or loading is established as best for every photocatalyst.
How platinum helps produce hydrogen
A photocatalyst absorbs light and separates charge in a semiconductor. Electrons reaching the surface can take part in the hydrogen-evolution reaction, while the other charge carriers must be consumed by the complementary oxidation reaction. Platinum is used as a cocatalyst to facilitate the surface reduction chemistry; the result also depends on the semiconductor and the conditions of the complete reaction system. Kim et al. (2025) examine this relationship in defined anatase-TiO2 films, while a broader discussion of photocatalytic surface redox reactions appears in the 2025 review of platinum-group single-atom photocatalysts.

“Pt surface chemistry” therefore describes several connected features, not one switch: how many Pt sites are available, whether Pt is isolated or clustered, the atoms surrounding it, the structure and exposed sites of particles, and the Pt–semiconductor interface. These features can affect how Pt is stabilized and how it interacts with reactants and photogenerated charge.

Site density and loading
More Pt does not necessarily mean more hydrogen. In a defined sputtered anatase-TiO2 thin-film model, Kim et al. reported Langmuir-type Pt adsorption and an optimal density of approximately 4 × 105 Pt single atoms per µm2, corresponding to around 0.26 at.% Pt. Higher loading did not further enhance photocatalytic activity in that tested system. This is a result for those films and conditions, not a general loading target for TiO2 powders or other semiconductors. Source: Kim et al., Small (2025).
#1 Best Overall
- 1g 10% activated carbon platinum;
- The items will be transported in vacuum packaging to maintain their original appearance and avoid oxidation;
- It is very suitable for scientific laboratory research experiments.
In the same thin-film study, once Pt loading was optimized, TiO2 thickness and structure remained primary influences through charge transport and light absorption. Changing cocatalyst loading alone cannot compensate for every limitation in the absorber.
Single atoms, coordination, and the support
An isolated Pt atom bonded to support atoms has a different local chemical environment from Pt atoms in a metallic nanoparticle. The support and its morphology can affect Pt coordination and stability. A 2025 review describes Pt single atoms anchored on oxides and other supports, while noting challenges in reliable synthesis and stabilization, including aggregation and characterization limits. Claims that Pt is atomically dispersed should therefore rest on evidence of dispersion and coordination, not simply on a low loading or a synthesis label. Chen et al. (2025).

A 2019 study grafted Pt single atoms onto morphology-controlled anatase TiO2 with highly exposed {001} facets using surface organometallic chemistry. At the same Pt loading, the grafted material showed higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution than material prepared by impregnation, and strongly suppressed the reverse H2/O2-to-water reaction in the dark. Those results compare preparation routes in that study; they do not establish that grafting or {001} facets will always give the best performance. 2019 study.
Oxidation state and the illuminated working surface
Preparation determines an initial Pt state, but that state may change during illumination and reaction. A 2018 perspective discusses active-state changes in semiconductor-supported cocatalysts, including Pt, during overall water splitting and their relationship to the cocatalyst–semiconductor interface. An ex-situ oxidation-state measurement should not be treated as proof of the operating state unless the study establishes that connection. 2018 perspective.
Rank #3
The cited evidence does not establish a universal ranking in which Pt(0) always outperforms Pt(II), or the reverse. Oxidation-state claims need to be tied to the particular support, preparation, and illumination conditions measured.
Particle size, facets, and exposed sites
Particle structure may also shape the available reaction sites, but the evidence needs its method and scope attached. A 2015 computational study modeled a Pt44 nanoparticle restructuring under hydrogen-evolution conditions. It predicted exposure of {100} facets, a greater concentration of apex active sites, and enhanced activity; its model favored ultrasmall particles below roughly 20 atoms. This is a theoretical HER prediction, not experimental proof of a photocatalytic device’s best particle size or facet. Wei and Liu (2015).

What the available studies actually establish
| Evidence | Reported result | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Defined anatase-TiO2 thin films, 2025 | Activity stopped improving above an optimal Pt single-atom density of about 4 × 105 atoms µm−2 (around 0.26 at.% Pt). | Experimental result for the tested thin-film system; not a universal loading recipe. |
| Grafted Pt single atoms versus impregnation, 2019 | Grafting gave higher hydrogen evolution at equal Pt loading and strongly suppressed the reverse reaction in the dark. | Comparison under that study’s materials and protocol. |
| Pt nanoparticle restructuring, 2015 | Model predicted favorable changes in exposed sites and HER activity, with ultrasmall particles below roughly 20 atoms favored. | Computational HER evidence, not a measured photocatalytic optimum. |
| Illuminated cocatalyst surfaces, 2018 | Perspective describes working-state changes during water splitting. | Supports distinguishing prepared Pt from its potentially evolving illuminated state. |
How to compare two Pt photocatalysts fairly
A meaningful comparison needs matched reaction conditions and a clear description of both the catalyst and the measurement. Check these details before attributing a performance difference to Pt chemistry:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Pt form and amount: State whether Pt is present as isolated atoms, clusters, or nanoparticles, and give the loading basis and site-density method where available.
- Chemical state: Report oxidation state and Pt–support coordination, and say whether they were measured ex situ, during illumination, or after reaction.
- Support and interface: Identify the semiconductor composition and phase, exposed facets, relevant defects, and how Pt was anchored.
- Reaction conditions: Match illumination wavelength and intensity, pH, reactor geometry, and the use of a sacrificial reagent versus overall water splitting.
- Performance and durability: Compare hydrogen rates using the same normalization, such as catalyst mass or Pt mass; include apparent quantum yield when reported, reverse-reaction behavior, and whether the active structure remains stable.
A rate normalized per catalyst mass is not directly comparable to one normalized per Pt mass. Likewise, hydrogen evolution with a sacrificial reagent is not the same reaction comparison as overall water splitting, because the oxidation half-reaction differs.
