A plasma antenna uses ionized gas as its radio-frequency element. Mobile electrons in the gas carry oscillating currents that radiate radio waves when driven by a signal; an incoming wave can, in principle, induce currents that a receiver picks up. The exact mechanism depends on the design—and receiving has not yet been demonstrated for the laser-filament antenna reported by North Carolina State University in 2026.
How a plasma antenna turns ionized gas into a radiator
A neutral gas becomes plasma when energy frees some of its electrons from atoms. Those mobile electrons make the gas electrically responsive: an applied radio-frequency (RF) field can move them and create current.

In a driven plasma-column antenna, a feed couples an RF signal into the column. The signal makes charges oscillate, and the resulting time-varying current and surface-wave behavior produce an electromagnetic field that propagates as radio waves. The broad principle resembles radiation from current in a metal antenna, but plasma is not automatically an ideal conductor. Its conductivity depends on factors including electron density, frequency, and how the discharge is sustained.

A plasma element needs both a way to create or sustain the ionized gas and a way to couple RF energy into it. The arrangement varies by design.

Laser-induced filament
In the 2026 North Carolina State University demonstration, a laser ionized a thin shaft of air. A metal ring around the filament acted as a capacitor: an RF generator drove the ring, and its electromagnetic field coupled the signal into the plasma without direct contact. The NC State account says metallic contact would distort the filament. The work demonstrated transmission at 30 MHz, in the HF–VHF range, as described in the university’s report.
Discharge-tube columns and arrays
Other laboratory designs use gas-filled dielectric tubes and electrical discharges to sustain plasma columns. A 2023 multi-polarized array study, for example, used neon or argon tubes with a small amount of mercury, 40.68 MHz power supplies, separate signal feeds, and regulating circuits. Those are details of that experimental array, not a universal construction recipe. See the 2023 array study.

How a plasma antenna receives a signal
When a radio wave reaches a suitable plasma element, its electric field can move the plasma’s electrons and induce a current. A feed can then carry the resulting signal to a receiver circuit. Plasma-column and discharge-tube designs are described as capable of both transmission and reception under suitable conditions.
That general receiving principle should not be confused with a demonstrated capability of every design. The 2026 NC State laser-filament experiment showed transmission, not reception by the filament antenna. Corresponding author Prya Darshni said, “And while we have not demonstrated its ability to serve as an antenna that can receive radio signals, there’s no reason to believe it wouldn’t also work as a receiver.” The statement is an expectation, not a report of a receiver test; the distinction is made in the NC State account.

What determines resonance and radiation behavior
Like other antennas, a plasma element’s behavior depends on its geometry and operating conditions. Length relative to wavelength helps determine resonance; plasma properties and the feed also affect impedance and how effectively the element radiates or receives.
In a 2022 Naval Research Laboratory prototype, researchers reported length-related frequency resonances and changes in radiation directionality as plasma density changed. Their meeting abstract described near-field measurements of surface waves and antenna patterns from 5 to 400 MHz; that range belongs to this laboratory prototype, not plasma antennas as a category. See the NRL authors’ 2022 abstract.

Plasma density, discharge power, column length, element arrangement, and relative phase can all be adjusted in some designs. Depending on the apparatus, these changes can affect resonance, radiation pattern, gain, bandwidth, polarization, and impedance. The 2023 array study describes control of element length and polarization through discharge conditions and regulating circuits.

- Fits Stereo Receiver: Pioneer Onkyo Yamaha Marantz Sherwood ect.
- Feature: with Magnetic Base Mount; 10 feet / 3m Coaxial Extension Cable; Cable Connector: F Type Male Plug Connector; Accessoried Adapter: 3.5mm Audio Plug Connector Adapter, TV Female Socket Connector Adapter, TV Male Plug Connector Adapter;
- Package List: 1 x Antenna; 3 x Connector Adapter (As the Picture Shown)
- Warm Tip: For better signal reception, the antenna can be placed vertically on the surface of a metal object.
- Laser-filament transmission: NC State’s 2026 report describes a 30 MHz transmission experiment. The received signal strength was reported as 2.5 times the laser-blocked, feed-only baseline. The transmitting filament and receiver had the same linear polarization, were approximately 5 cm apart, and operated in an unobstructed near field. This result does not establish long-range performance or reception by the plasma filament.
- Discharge-column efficiency and noise: A 2004 study estimated about 65% antenna efficiency at 100 MHz for its particular argon surface-wave-discharge plasma column, using measured electron densities. It also reported an approximately 1 dB rise in total antenna noise due to the plasma under the study’s conditions. Neither figure is a general rating for plasma antennas. See Rayner, Whichello, and Cheetham’s 2004 study.
- Microwave pulse generation by a different method: A 1996 proof-of-principle experiment produced short, well-polarized pulses across 6–21 GHz by converting a static electric field in a laser-ionized, gas-filled capacitor array. That is a distinct plasma-based radiation-generation scheme, not a driven plasma-column antenna. See the 1996 experiment.
Plasma radiators versus plasma-controlled reflectors
Not every plasma-related antenna concept uses plasma as the driven radiator. A 2023 satellite-communications feasibility study modeled a reflective surface made from plasma discharges over a metallic ground plane. Changing plasma properties such as density controlled reflection. This is a plasma-enabled antenna-surface concept, not the same mechanism as feeding current into a plasma column to radiate. The study is available at Sensors.
Trade-offs and how to compare designs
Creating and controlling plasma requires equipment in addition to the RF feed. A laser-filament design also relies on a suitable laser and capacitive coupling. Finite and nonuniform conductivity can affect efficiency and radiation patterns, while plasma itself can contribute noise. Some configurations can be reconfigured by changing discharge conditions or laser parameters, but the practical value depends on measured performance in the intended application.
For a meaningful comparison between a plasma antenna and a metal antenna, align the operating frequency, geometry, feed, and measurement conditions. Compare the properties that determine usefulness in the intended system:
- Operating frequency and measured bandwidth
- Plasma source, sustaining power, and control requirements
- Feed and coupling arrangement
- Measured efficiency and noise under stated conditions
- Radiation pattern, gain, polarization, and reconfiguration range
- Whether reception was actually demonstrated for that specific design
Research reports describe potential advantages such as rapid reconfiguration, beam steering, or reduced conducting-plasma contribution when the plasma is off. They do not establish that plasma antennas are generally smaller, more efficient, or better than metal antennas. The studies cited here document research apparatus; commercial availability of a matching product is not established by them.
