Pixar films are made with a coordinated pipeline, not a single piece of “magic” software. Artists use different tools to animate characters, exchange complex scene data, build effects, and render images; the handoffs let creative departments work together while preserving room to revise and art-direct each shot.
How the pipeline fits together
A production pipeline is the connected set of tools and processes departments use to make a film. Pixar’s 2019 account of its USD pipeline describes a shift from a traditionally linear workflow toward sharing scene descriptions across applications. Those descriptions can include models, animation, materials, lighting, and cameras, giving teams a way to work with context and make revisions without simply overwriting one another’s work. The broad division of labor is straightforward: Presto is Pixar’s animation system, OpenUSD helps describe and exchange scenes, and RenderMan renders production imagery. Effects and other specialized applications can join the workflow too. The tools contribute different capabilities; they do not make creative decisions on their own.
What each technology does
Presto: character animation
Presto is Pixar’s proprietary animation application. It is where animators create and refine character performances. Pixar’s technical account connects ideas in Presto’s composition system with the development of USD, but the two have different jobs: Presto is an animation system, while USD is a way to describe and interchange scene data. OpenUSD: shared scene descriptions
OpenUSD, short for Universal Scene Description, provides a common way for tools and departments to work with complex 3D scenes. Pixar characterizes it as an open-source technology for robustly and scalably interchanging scenes made from many assets, sources, and animations, while supporting collaborative workflows. Its layered approach can let teams add or revise contributions while retaining other work and scene context. Pixar: “Technology at Pixar”
Pixar’s 2019 pipeline account also describes USD working with Hydra to help artists visualize large scenes faster. That means faster interactive feedback, not a promise that every scene can be viewed interactively at final-render quality. RenderMan: final image rendering
RenderMan calculates images from scene content such as geometry, materials, lighting, and cameras. Pixar describes it as its production-rendering technology and says it is used for all Pixar production rendering, including feature films, shorts, theme-park content, and marketing. Effects and connected applications
Specialized tools can contribute work that moves through the same scene pipeline. Pixar’s RenderMan materials describe integrations with professional applications including Maya, Katana, and Houdini; the current RenderMan overview also names Blender support. The point is interoperability: departments can use tools suited to their work and still pass assets and scene information along the production chain. RenderMan 23 announcement
A concrete handoff: the belief-system effect in Inside Out 2
Pixar’s account of “Making the Belief System” shows how these roles meet in a shot. Effects artists built rigs for the visual, then passed them to Presto using Houdini Engine and OpenUSD. Particle elements were rendered in RenderMan on a separate layer, and the result was composited with the other image elements. Pixar: “Making the Belief System”

The process also leaves room for visual judgment. Pixar quotes Lead Sets TD Brandon Montell describing adjustments to the pattern’s scale and movement for wide and close shots. A system can make a complex effect reusable and adjustable, but artists still shape how it reads in the frame.

Shared scene data helps departments collaborate without flattening every contribution into a single, irreversible file. Interactive visualization can help artists evaluate a large scene sooner, and rendering tools provide control over how materials, light, and stylized choices appear. Pixar’s stylization account describes USD and OpenSubdiv as part of its 3D workflow, with RenderMan supporting control over stylized rendering. The tools serve the director’s and artists’ intentions; technical scale is useful only when it supports the image and performance.

In a July 2018 announcement, Pixar CTO Steve May said, “The new RenderMan technology is already changing our pipeline,” adding, “We are moving to take full advantage of its interactivity and scalability.” The statement captures the production purpose of tool development: improving feedback and handling complexity, rather than replacing artistic work. What Pixar’s scale figures do—and do not—mean
Pixar’s 2019 USD pipeline article said Toy Story 4 included “worlds which surpass 1 trillion polygons.” The figure describes an exceptionally complex shot in the film, which Pixar called its most complex movie to that date. Pixar’s RenderMan About page, accessed in 2026, says its machine-learning denoiser has been “Used in over 100 films since 2018.” That figure applies to the denoiser, not to all RenderMan use or Pixar productions. Pixar: “About RenderMan”

There is no single application that explains Pixar animation. The published examples show a studio pipeline combining proprietary animation software, an open scene-description technology, a production renderer, and integrated tools for specialized work. Pixar’s public materials identify important parts of that system, but they do not provide a complete inventory of every current production tool or every internal workflow. The useful answer is therefore about coordinated roles and handoffs: technology gives artists ways to build, revise, share, and render complex work, while the film’s creative choices remain central.
