Can plastic waste be turned into a material that captures CO₂?
Yes. A peer-reviewed study published in Science Advances on 5 September 2025 reports converting waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET)—the plastic used in many drink bottles and other consumer packaging—into compounds tested as solid CO₂ sorbents. The process is a form of chemical upcycling: it changes the plastic into new molecules rather than simply shredding or melting it into another plastic product.

The authors used PET aminolysis to produce a compound called BAETA and related oligomers. BAETA is an organic solid that can capture CO₂ without being dissolved in a liquid solvent or attached to an added solid support. That makes it distinct from both liquid amine capture solvents and approaches that convert plastic into activated carbon. The study is by Margarita Poderyte and colleagues; its DOI is 10.1126/sciadv.adv5906.

How does PET plastic become a carbon-capture material?
The researchers reacted PET waste with 1,2-ethylenediamine, a low-cost chemical reagent. The reaction breaks down and transforms the PET into BAETA and oligomers, which were then evaluated for CO₂ capture.

In a report by Chemistry World, coauthor Margarita Poderyte described the synthesis as using no solvent or catalyst and said it was conducted at 60°C for 24 hours. She explained that the team optimized the reaction to use the minimum amount of ethylenediamine needed. The journal paper is the primary source for the technical method and experimental results; the news report offers this accessible description of the synthesis.
How much CO₂ did the material capture, and under what conditions?
The study reports a maximum capture capacity of 3.4 moles of CO₂ per kilogram for the aminolysis products as stand-alone organic solids. This is the authors’ reported maximum, not a guaranteed operating capacity for a deployed system. BAETA was tested in different settings:

The flue-gas and air tests address substantially different CO₂ concentrations. Results across those conditions should not be treated as directly interchangeable with each other or with the performance of a complete industrial capture plant. The authors also report multiple capture cycles, but the figures above do not establish long-term field durability.

No. The team demonstrated production using 1 kilogram of untreated consumer PET waste. That is a kilogram-scale feedstock demonstration, not evidence of an industrial production line or a deployed carbon-capture system.

The study supports the feasibility of making and testing a PET-derived sorbent. It does not establish the commercial cost of the material, its performance during extended field operation, or the energy and emissions required across the full process. In particular, the paper’s description of a potential pathway toward net-negative emissions is prospective: the evidence reported here does not demonstrate net-negative lifecycle emissions.

The idea joins two problems: persistent PET waste and the need to capture CO₂. Turning waste into a useful capture material could create value from a discarded feedstock, while BAETA’s reported activity in both simulated flue gas and humid ambient air suggests that the material is worth further investigation.

To judge its practical value against other sorbents, researchers and eventual system designers would need comparable evidence on CO₂ concentration, humidity, capture temperature, capacity measured on the same basis, selectivity, regeneration energy, cycling durability, process emissions, and operating scale. The study reports several capture conditions and cycling, but does not establish every measure needed for a commercial or lifecycle comparison.

Turning that finding into a useful climate technology will depend on scale-up and full-system performance, neither of which is established by the kilogram-scale material demonstration.
