The double-spend problem is the risk that the same digital funds or asset will be used in two conflicting transactions. A payment system must decide which transaction counts and keep its record consistent. NIST defines it as “Transacting with the same set of digital assets more than once.”
How can digital money be spent twice?
Digital payments are represented by records. Unlike handing over a physical banknote, sending a digital asset does not by itself remove every copy of the information representing it. The system therefore needs rules for deciding which transactions are valid and recording the result consistently.

Suppose Alice has $10 and sends a $10 payment to Bob, then sends another $10 payment to Charlie at nearly the same time. Each payment could appear valid when considered alone, but both cannot be accepted together: Alice has only $10 to spend. Different participants may first see the two transactions in different orders, so the system has to resolve the conflict.
This is more than a duplicate record. The problem is that mutually exclusive transactions claim the same value, and the system must determine which one is accepted.

How do payment systems resolve conflicting spends?
Centralized payments
A bank or clearing authority can check an account against a shared record of available funds, approve transactions, and decide which payment clears. The central authority provides the final decision point.
Bitcoin
Bitcoin uses a public transaction history and proof-of-work consensus to help participants agree on accepted transactions without a central clearinghouse. This protocol is a way to resolve competing spends; it does not mean that a transaction is final the instant it is first seen.

XRP Ledger
On the XRP Ledger, participants agree on a group of transactions, and deterministic rules order that group. If two transactions conflict, the one ordered first succeeds and the other fails. This is a different approach from Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mechanism.

What the double-spend problem does—and does not—mean
- It concerns the same digital value being claimed in conflicting transactions, not every repeated transaction record.
- The essential task is to choose which mutually exclusive transaction counts and ensure participants agree on that choice.
- Cryptography alone does not settle the conflict. Systems also need shared validation and transaction-ordering rules.
- There is no single mechanism used by every digital payment system: centralized clearing and decentralized protocols make decisions in different ways.
