For character designers, they can help explore visual directions, but a generated image is not a finished design decision—and using one does not automatically settle who owns the result or whether it can be used commercially.
How are AI image generators changing digital art?
They give artists another way to produce and compare visual material during a project. A 2024 survey by Yuying Tang, Ningning Zhang, Mariana Ciancia, and Zhigang Wang asked 380 people about image-generation tools: 173 respondents identified with occupations in art, design, filmmaking, or art-and-design study, while 207 identified with other occupations. The authors called these groups “professional” and “non-professional” for their analysis; those labels describe the sample, not a universal definition of professional practice.

Respondents in both groups reported using the tools at more than one stage. The figures below are self-reported shares within each group, not adoption rates for the art industry and not evidence that AI improves the quality or commercial success of a project.

The survey also captures why the tools appeal—and what users worry about. Inspiration was reported as a positive effect by 54% of each group. Professional respondents also reported time or cost savings (48%) and efficiency (48%). Non-professional respondents cited realizing design ideas (54%), saving time or costs (51%), and making design easier (49%). On the concern side, 50% of professional respondents reported copyright concerns and 46% cited similarity; non-professional respondents reported similarity concerns (51%), reduced human control (46%), and concerns about a lack of innovation or creativity (44%). These are responses from this particular online sample, not proof that every artist experiences the same benefits or drawbacks.

Can AI help me design a character?
It can help produce visual starting points, especially when the goal is to compare possible directions quickly. The survey covered art and design broadly; it did not study character designers as a separate group. The following is a practical workflow example, not an outcome tested by that study.
- Set the design problem. Write down the character’s role, setting, personality, and practical constraints before generating images. Decide which choices you want to explore, such as silhouette, costume, palette, age, or mood.
- Generate alternatives, not a final answer. Treat initial images as prompts for your own judgment. Note which shapes or details fit the brief and which are accidental, inconsistent, or too close to a reference you should not imitate.
- Select and develop a direction. Use the strongest visual ideas to make deliberate design choices. Keep notes or sketches showing how the character’s features, costume, and proportions relate to the brief.
- Refine the design yourself. Redraw, edit, or combine selected elements in your illustration software. Check the result across useful views or poses; a striking single image may not provide a consistent design that works throughout a project.
- Keep track of what came from where. Save relevant drafts and the terms that applied to the tool and account you used. This makes it easier to review your creative contribution, permissions, and any disclosure expectations later.
A drawing tablet can be an optional companion if you want to sketch over, annotate, or manually refine generated references. It is not required to generate images, and the cited survey did not test tablets or establish that a particular device improves results.

What should I compare when choosing an image tool?
There is no established universal “best” generator in the evidence here: it does not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of current products. Choose around the job you need done and check the current product documentation, account settings, and terms before relying on a tool for a project.

Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Possibly, but there is no single rule for all generators. Commercial-use permissions can depend on the provider, the plan, the account, the type of use, and the applicable jurisdiction. Read the current terms for the exact service and account involved rather than treating one provider’s policy as an industry standard.

For example, Midjourney’s published commercial-use guidance says that a business grossing more than US$1 million a year needs a Pro or Mega plan to use images commercially for that company. Its guidance also says that an upscaled image made by another user belongs to the original creator and requires permission for use. These are Midjourney-specific terms; they do not determine the rules for other services.
Adobe describes Firefly as trained on licensed and public-domain content, including Adobe Stock material for which contributors are compensated, and describes safeguards intended to support commercial use. Adobe also says it provides IP indemnification to enterprise customers for Firefly-generated content. Those are Adobe’s descriptions of its products and protections, not an independent legal certification or a guarantee that every use is risk-free. Check the current terms and any applicable eligibility conditions for your account and project.

Who owns an AI-generated image?
“Ownership” can mean different things: copyright in human-authored expression, permission under a service’s contract, or control over access and reuse. A provider’s commercial-use permission does not by itself answer every copyright question, and copyright rules differ by country.

Midjourney’s terms say users are responsible for the content they provide or generate and grant the company a broad license to inputs and generated assets. The terms also say that content posted publicly is viewable and remixable by default. Those conditions are specific to that service; check its current terms and privacy settings before submitting sensitive material or relying on an output.

Can I copyright a character I made with AI?
In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 Part 2 report says that copyrightability depends on the nature and extent of human contribution, including whether a person authored expressive elements in the output. The Office says prompts alone are not enough. Human-authored expression visible in the result, creative selection or arrangement, or sufficiently expressive human modification may support protection for the human-authored portions.
That is not an automatic blanket copyright in everything a generator determines. For a character project, keep a clear record of the expressive decisions and work you contributed, such as sketches, revisions, selected and arranged elements, and manual edits. Whether those contributions qualify for protection depends on the circumstances; the Office’s guidance is U.S.-specific, not legal advice, and should not be assumed to apply in another country.
How can I tell whether an image was made with AI?
Provenance information can provide clues, but it is not a universal AI detector. Adobe says it automatically applies Content Credentials to certain assets made entirely with Firefly, such as Text to Image. Depending on the workflow, those credentials may record information such as the issuer, date, app or device, and AI tool. That does not mean every image touched by Adobe software carries credentials.

OpenAI says its verification preview checks supported provenance signals, including Content Credentials and SynthID, for supported OpenAI-generated images. It also warns that detection is not foolproof: metadata or watermarks can be stripped, so the absence of a signal does not prove that an image was not made with its tools. Treat a credential as useful provenance when present, not as conclusive proof of authorship; treat missing metadata as inconclusive.

How should artists decide where AI belongs in a workflow?
- Use it where it solves a defined problem. Rapidly exploring reference directions is different from asking a generator to make the finished character.
- Keep the human decisions visible. Make intentional choices, revise the output, and retain working files that show your contribution.
- Check rights before production use. Confirm the provider’s current commercial-use rules, plan requirements, privacy settings, and treatment of inputs and outputs.
- Choose for control, not novelty. Test whether a tool can support the composition, revisions, consistency, and editing steps your project actually needs.
- Preserve provenance when it matters. Retain available credentials or process records, and follow any disclosure requirements that apply to the client, platform, or jurisdiction.
