Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA browser tool can inspect text when you paste it into a webpage, but that is not the same as continuously monitoring your system clipboard. It also cannot guarantee that every secret will be caught. The key questions are what content it checks, where it runs, which permissions it needs, and whether anything leaves your device.
What does “detect what you paste” mean?
The phrase can describe three different mechanisms. A tool might inspect a paste event inside a webpage, read the system clipboard, or classify text by looking for patterns associated with sensitive data. Those mechanisms have different privacy and permission implications.

Inspecting a paste event
A page-level tool can examine text as it is pasted into a supported input field. This approach can focus on the content being sent to a website rather than repeatedly checking the clipboard when nothing is happening. Coverage may depend on the websites and input fields the tool supports.
Reading the system clipboard
Clipboard monitoring checks clipboard contents independently of a particular paste into a page. Repeated polling can be inefficient and raises privacy concerns because it may read data even when you have not pasted it. Chrome’s September 23, 2025 discussion of the clipboardchange event describes it as an alternative to polling and notes an origin trial in Chrome and Edge starting with version 140; that article framed standardization as a goal, not universal current support. Chrome’s clipboardchange discussion is a dated account, not confirmation of support in every current browser.

Classifying pasted text
After obtaining text, a tool can look for recognizable patterns, such as strings resembling API keys, tokens, or passwords. Pattern checks are not proof that a string is secret, and a secret that does not match the tool’s rules can be missed. Without documented test results, there is no basis for claiming a particular detector’s accuracy.
What browser access and permissions are involved?
The web Clipboard API can read and write text and other clipboard data in secure contexts, subject to browser restrictions. MDN explains that ordinary webpage reads generally require recent user activation and interaction; browser extensions with relevant permissions may have a different access path. The exact behavior therefore depends on the browser, extension permissions, and implementation. MDN’s Clipboard API documentation describes these security considerations.

Before installing a tool, check its permission prompt and documentation for the specific browser you use. In particular, look for whether it analyzes content only when you paste into a supported page or can access clipboard contents in other circumstances. Do not infer one extension’s access from another extension’s listing.

Clipboard data can contain more than plain text. Rich-text content may include HTML markup, which requires separate care. Chrome warns that applications opting into unsanitized HTML must sanitize it themselves because clipboard markup can create security risks. Chrome’s unsanitized HTML guidance explains that responsibility.

A tool that checks only plain text has a narrower scope than one that processes HTML or other clipboard formats. Its description should make that distinction clear; do not assume that a text detector evaluates every format you can paste.

| Tool | Stated scope | Privacy or processing claim |
|---|---|---|
| SecureIntent | Its Chrome Web Store listing says it warns before users paste API keys, tokens, or passwords into websites, including AI chats, and describes user actions after a warning. | The listing says detection runs on the device. This is a vendor claim, not an independent security audit. Chrome Web Store listing |
| PasteGuard | Its privacy policy says it inspects text pasted, typed, or submitted on eight named AI chat sites: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Grok, and Mistral Le Chat. It lists sensitive-data categories and an advanced semantic feature using Chrome’s built-in Gemini Nano. | Consult the policy for its stated handling practices; the policy is a vendor statement, not an independent audit. PasteGuard privacy policy |
| CopyCaution | Its Chrome Web Store listing describes clipboard-related protection, which is not identical to scanning pasted text for secrets. | The listing says protection runs locally and that it does not read the general clipboard or clipboard history. These are product claims. Chrome Web Store listing |
Listings and policies can change. Check the current details before relying on a tool, and do not treat a local-processing statement as an independent assessment of security.
How should you choose a paste detector?
Evaluate the tool against the way you work rather than relying on a broad “protects your data” claim:
- Detection scope: Which categories does it identify, and does it inspect pasted text, typed text, submitted text, or some combination?
- Supported contexts: Which browsers, sites, and input fields are covered? A tool that supports selected AI chat sites may not work in every web form.
- Data flow: Does analysis happen locally, or is any content sent to a remote service? Check the privacy policy and permissions, not just a short store description.
- Response options: Can you cancel, proceed, or redact the flagged content? A warning is useful only if its actions fit your needs.
- Limits: What is likely to trigger false alarms, and what kinds of secrets might evade detection? Do not assume an untested detector catches every credential.
- Data retention: Does the product say whether it stores clipboard or page text, and for how long? If the policy does not establish this, treat it as unknown.
Can it stop you pasting an API key into an AI chat?
A tool designed to recognize credential-like text may warn you before a supported paste reaches a supported website. That is a useful interruption, not a guarantee: the site may not be covered, the input method may differ, or the text may not match the detector’s rules. Confirm the tool’s supported sites and behavior, and avoid pasting credentials into services that do not need them.
