A 2013 study found that European perch exposed to oxazepam became more active, less social, and fed faster under experimental conditions. The result concerned one drug, one species, and a measured exposure—not a diagnosis of “antisocial” behavior in fish generally. Later whole-lake research found that natural conditions could outweigh the predicted drug effect.
What did the 2013 perch study find?
In a study published in Science on February 15, 2013, Tomas Brodin and colleagues exposed wild European perch (Perca fluviatilis) to oxazepam, a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety. At the experimental low concentration of 1.8 µg/L, the researchers reported increased activity, reduced sociality, and a higher feeding rate. The paper’s abstract and bibliographic record describe altered behavior and feeding in the exposed fish.

“Less social” describes a measured behavioral change in that experiment. It does not mean the fish received a human-like diagnosis, and it does not establish that all fish or all anti-anxiety medicines behave this way.

The paper reported oxazepam measurements in wastewater and a receiving river separately from the experimental exposure. These figures come from Brodin and colleagues’ 2013 study; they are not a current survey of contamination worldwide.

The researchers also reported that oxazepam concentration in perch muscle from the River Fyris was more than six times the concentration in the water. That finding indicates bioaccumulation in the fish measured in this study; it should not be read as a general ratio for every species or waterway. The paper’s original study text and measurement table provide the reported environmental measurements.
Does oxazepam make fish less social in nature?
The 2013 experiment supports a specific conclusion: oxazepam altered measured behavior in European perch under the study’s exposure conditions. It does not, by itself, show that the same behavioral effect will occur in every natural setting.

A 2021 whole-lake study tested perch familiarized with lake conditions at oxazepam concentrations of 11–24 µg/L. The researchers did not observe the predicted anti-anxiety response and judged drug effects negligible compared with other environmental conditions. This is a qualification about how laboratory findings generalize, not a direct disproof of the earlier experiment: the setting, exposure, and conditions differed. The 2021 study discusses the whole-lake results.

Why can wastewater pharmaceuticals matter to wildlife?
Medicines taken by people can enter wastewater, and treatment does not necessarily remove every pharmaceutical compound. The 2013 measurements show oxazepam in treated effluent and in a river receiving it, while the perch muscle measurement shows that the compound was also detected in fish tissue in that study. Together, these observations explain why researchers investigate both environmental concentrations and possible biological effects.

They do not establish the prevalence of oxazepam in waterways globally or prove a population-level impact on fish. The whole-lake findings also show why effects measured under controlled conditions should not automatically be projected onto a complex ecosystem.

The study is about environmental release and ecological effects, not a reason to change medical treatment. It provides no basis for stopping or altering a prescribed medicine. As coauthor Jerker Fick told Chemistry World: “The solution to this problem isn’t to stop medicating people who are ill but to try to develop sewage treatment plants that can capture environmentally hazardous drugs.” That is a proposed direction, not evidence that a particular treatment is available or effective. Chemistry World’s report attributes the statement to Fick.
