The drive then decodes and checks that data before the console or computer can use it. The basic idea applies across CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs, but their physical formats differ—and reading game data is not the same as authenticating a disc.
From a disc’s information layer to a digital signal
A read-only optical disc stores data along a spiral track in a reflective information layer. A laser shines through the disc’s transparent material and focuses on that layer. The recorded structure changes how much light returns; a photodetector senses those variations and turns them into an electrical signal. Canon describes this component path for CD reading and says DVD reading uses essentially the same principle: Canon’s explanation of optical-disc technology. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes the structures used by read-only CD, DVD and Blu-ray media: CCI’s overview of CD, DVD and Blu-ray construction.
The disc spins while the optical pickup moves to the part of the track the drive needs. In the pickup, a laser diode supplies the beam, lenses focus it on the information layer, and the returning light reaches the photodetector. The detector’s output is not yet a game file: it is a signal that drive electronics must decode according to the disc format.
How the drive finds and reads requested data
When software requests data, the drive has to position its pickup at the relevant location, keep it focused as the disc rotates, and read the encoded data. The precise control sequence varies by format and device. Microsoft’s description of DVD reads in Windows gives one concrete example: the drive may change layers, seek, refocus the optical pickup unit, check its position, then adjust and repeat until it reaches the requested data. Microsoft Learn’s DVD read-performance guidance explains why data location and drive behavior affect loading.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Seeking takes time, as does changing layers: during either operation the drive cannot read data from the target position. Microsoft’s guidance connects data placement and read behavior with loading performance. A game’s data organization can therefore affect how much time the drive spends moving to requested content, although these sources do not establish a universal loading-time figure for consoles or games.
How reflected light becomes usable game data
The electrical signal must be decoded and checked before it can be passed on as data. Disc formats use their own encoding and error-correction schemes; the details of CD decoding should not be treated as universal rules for DVDs or Blu-ray discs.

CD decoding is more than reading pits as bits
On a CD, pits and lands do not each directly represent a 1 or 0. Yale’s educational explanation describes how transitions between a pit and a land, or a land and a pit, are interpreted using NRZI; the signal then goes through EFM reversal and cross-interleaved Reed–Solomon decoding. Yale’s explanation of audio CD encoding covers those CD-specific stages.
DVDs are read in error-correcting blocks
Microsoft’s DVD example describes files divided into sectors grouped into error-correction code (ECC) blocks. Each block contains sixteen 2-KB sectors, or 32 KB. The drive reads and decodes a whole block while filling its cache, and retries if it encounters a read error. If the block remains unreadable, the drive may report an error; dust or scratches can make portions of a disc unreadable. The operating system or application decides what to do after that error, so the recovery behavior is not necessarily the same for every game or device.

Why CD, DVD and Blu-ray are not interchangeable
All three formats use reflected laser light, but their information layers, data density, optics and drive requirements differ. A device must support the particular format to read it; having an optical drive does not automatically mean it can read every kind of disc.
| Format detail | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|
| CD and DVD reading principle | Canon says DVD reading works on essentially the same optical principle as CD reading. Canon |
| Layer construction | DVD media can have two information layers readable from one side, and information layers can be placed on either side. Blu-ray has smaller pits than CD. Canadian Conservation Institute |
| Laser wavelengths in Sony’s comparison | CD/DVD: 650 nm red laser; Blu-ray: 405 nm blue-violet laser. Sony’s Blu-ray format explainer |
| Optical focusing in Sony’s comparison | Numerical aperture: 0.6 for DVD and 0.85 for Blu-ray. Sony |
| Blu-ray capacity cited by Sony | 25 GB for a single-layer disc and 50 GB for a dual-layer disc. These are format figures in Sony’s explainer, not a guarantee about the capacity or content of every game disc. Sony |
These comparisons describe physical formats, not a promise that every console or computer supports every disc. The drive’s format compatibility matters as much as the fact that the media is optical.

Reading a game disc does not explain authentication
The optical read path explains how a drive turns recorded patterns into data. It does not, by itself, explain how a particular console decides whether a disc is an authorized game, or how that console divides installation, loading and gameplay data between the disc and internal storage. Microsoft’s cited instructions concern DVD game-data reads in Windows; they do not document a complete console authentication process or modern consoles’ storage architecture. Those details require console- and generation-specific evidence.
