Online age checks do not all work the same way. A site might ask you to confirm your age, estimate an age range from available signals or a face image, check an identity document, or accept a credential that proves you meet an age threshold. Depending on the method and its design, the provider may process information such as a birth date, document image, selfie or biometric data, while the website may receive only a result such as “over 18.” To understand what is exposed, check both what the checker collects and what the site receives, shares and retains.
What online age verification means
“Age verification” is often used as a catch-all for several kinds of age assurance. They differ in what they establish and what information they need. The European Commission’s guidance on the Digital Services Act describes self-declaration, age estimation and age verification as common categories; the OECD’s 2025 report distinguishes estimating age from checking a person’s actual age against official documents.

That distinction matters for privacy and reliability. Asking someone to state an age is not the same as checking a document. Estimating an age range is not the same as confirming a person’s identity or exact date of birth. And a credential can, depending on how it is designed, prove that someone meets an age threshold without giving a website their name or birthday.
- Self-declaration: You enter or confirm an age. This is straightforward, but it relies on what you say rather than an independent check.
- Inference: A service uses signals already available to it to infer an age or age band. Which signals are used depends on the service; do not assume a particular site uses a particular signal unless it documents that practice.
- Age estimation: A system estimates an age or range, potentially from biometric information such as a face image. An estimate is not proof of an exact birth date or identity.
- Age verification: An age is checked against an authoritative source, for example an identity document or credential. The information on a document may go well beyond the age fact the site needs.
- Proof of age: A credential or token asserts that a person meets a threshold, such as being over 18. A system may be designed to share that result without sharing a name or exact date of birth with the website.
These labels describe different approaches, not a guarantee about any particular service. A provider may use more than one step, and its notice should explain the method actually presented to you.

What information can an age check collect or reveal?
The data depends on the method and on the system’s design. Potential inputs or outputs include an age you declare, a date of birth, an image or scan of an identity document, identity details printed on that document, a selfie or other biometric information, a credential identifier, or a simple result such as “over 18.” These are possibilities, not a list of data every check collects.
Separate the data flow into two questions: what does the age-check provider receive, and what does the website receive? The provider may process information to make a decision while the website receives only a pass/fail or threshold response. In another implementation, the site or provider may handle more information. The labels “verification” and “privacy preserving” alone do not establish which is happening.
| Method | Possible information at the check | Possible result to the site | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-declaration | An age or date of birth entered by the user | The entered value or a threshold result, depending on implementation | Whether the site records the exact date or only the answer needed for access |
| Inference | Signals available to the service; the specific signals are service-dependent | An inferred age band or decision | What signals are used, why they are used, and whether an appeal or alternative exists |
| Age estimation | Potentially a face image or other biometric information | An estimated range or threshold decision | Whether an image or template is created, who processes it, and how long it is retained |
| Document or credential verification | A document image or credential data sufficient for the check; a document may show additional identity details | Information extracted from the document, or a narrower age result | Which fields are captured and transmitted, and whether the site receives the document or only a result |
| Threshold proof | A credential or token asserting that the user meets a specified age threshold | A yes/no threshold result in a design built to limit disclosure | Whether the proof can be linked to an identity or other activity, and what identifiers are retained |
The table shows possible patterns, not a universal specification. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a standard commercial-provider retention period, a standard set of subcontractors, or uniform security practices. Those details have to be checked for the provider and the exact website flow in question.

How a check works from start to finish
A useful way to assess a prompt is to follow the information through the parties involved. The exact sequence varies, but an age check commonly has a request, an input or credential, a decision, and a result sent to the service. The following is a way to inspect the flow, not a claim that every site follows these steps.
- Notice the request and the parties. Identify the website asking for the check and, if named, the age-check provider. Look for a privacy notice or linked explanation before submitting anything.
- Identify the method. Determine whether the prompt asks you to declare an age, provide a document, use a selfie or estimation step, or present a credential. If the method is unclear, the prompt alone may not tell you what is processed.
- Check what is captured. For a document route, ask whether the system captures the entire document or only particular fields. For a face-based route, check whether a face image or derived biometric template is processed. Do not infer deletion or local processing just because the interaction happens in an app.
- Follow the result. Find out whether the website receives your exact birth date, extracted identity details, an identifier, or merely a threshold answer. The provider and the site can be separate recipients with different roles.
- Check storage and onward use. Look for retention periods, deletion timing, sharing with other parties, and any use beyond the age decision. If the notice does not say, the practice is not established by the mere fact that the check completed.
- Look for a way to recover from an error. Find the alternative route or contact process for a failed or incorrect check before relying on a single automated outcome.
Does the provider keep an ID or selfie?
There is no universal answer. A provider’s handling depends on its system and the service’s implementation; the reviewed sources do not establish a retention period or deletion practice for commercial providers as a class. A claim that a check is completed does not, by itself, tell you whether an image was stored, for how long, or whether another party received it.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) advises entities covered by Australian privacy principles to be clear about what is collected, why, by whom, how long it is kept, and what alternatives or review processes exist. Its guidance says personal and sensitive inputs, including biometric information, templates and identity documents, should be destroyed once the purposes for collection have been met. This is regulator guidance within that Australian privacy context, not a description of every provider’s actual behavior or a universal legal rule.

Before submitting a sensitive input, look for an explicit answer on retention and deletion. Distinguish a statement about the provider’s own system from the site’s retention policy, and check whether the notice addresses copies, derived templates, identifiers and disclosures to other parties. If those points are not explained, do not assume the most privacy-protective outcome.

Can a website see your date of birth?
It can, but it does not have to. A website might receive an exact birth date or data extracted from a document; another design can give it only a result indicating whether you meet a requested age. The answer depends on the particular check, not simply on whether the page calls it age verification.
The European Commission describes a privacy-preserving design in which a user first obtains an age certification through a supported route, such as a biometric passport or ID card, a national eID, a third-party app such as a banking app, or an in-person process. According to the Commission’s FAQ, the app saves confirmation that the user is over a threshold—not a name or birthday—and later tells a platform whether the person is over the age the platform requests.

In the Commission’s stated blueprint, communication with the initial proof provider ends after certification. The proof presented to a service does not include ID information that traces the user, and the service’s check does not reveal information back to the issuer. Those are claims about the Commission’s described design; they are not guarantees about unrelated commercial tools. When evaluating another system, check its own data flow and documentation.

The European Commission said its solution became feature ready on 15 April 2026 and can be customized by Member States and market players. “Feature ready” does not mean every resident can already use it. The Commission’s current FAQ says availability across the EU is expected by the end of 2026 and depends on Member States being ready to deploy it.
Separately, in a policy publication dated 29 April 2026, the Commission encouraged Member States to make privacy-preserving age-verification tools available by 31 December 2026. That is an encouragement and target, not evidence that deployment is complete in every country. The publication also reports that 24% of 14-to-17-year-olds in six EU countries said they had seen pornographic content at least once per week. Attribute that figure to the European Commission’s 2026 publication: it is not a global estimate, and the reviewed text does not identify the underlying survey.

What privacy and fairness risks should you consider?
Regulators identify risks to assess, not inevitable effects of every age-check system. They include exposure of sensitive data in a breach, profiling or tracking, collection or retention beyond what is necessary, discriminatory or disproportionate effects, and deterring people from using a service or accessing content. A system’s design, deployment and legal setting affect which concerns are relevant.
Proportionality is central: the data and assurance demanded should be considered in relation to the purpose. The Canadian Office of the Privacy Commissioner recommends risk-based, proportionate use and says age assurance should not be a default condition for accessing the internet. That is regulator guidance, not a universal legal rule. The OAIC’s guidance similarly states: “Age checks should not seek to reveal the identity of the individual and should only validate age for the purpose of accessing a specific service.” Its advice is directed to entities covered by Australian privacy principles.
Accessibility and error handling matter alongside data minimization. An estimate or automated decision can be wrong; the evidence reviewed here does not establish common error rates for particular providers or a uniform appeal process. Check whether there is another way to establish eligibility and how to challenge a result, especially if the first route depends on a document, device, biometric input or credential you cannot use.

Use the service’s current notice and the provider’s current documentation for the flow actually shown to you. These questions help distinguish a narrow threshold check from a process that collects more data, and reveal where the available explanation is incomplete.
- Who is involved? What is the provider’s identity, and what role does the website play?
- What is collected? Is the input a declaration, document, selfie, biometric template, credential or another signal? What exact fields are involved?
- What does the site receive? Does it see a document, exact birth date, identity details, identifier, or only a threshold result?
- Who else receives information? Does the notice describe disclosures or other parties involved in processing?
- How long is data kept? Look for retention periods and deletion timing for both the provider and the website, not just a general statement that data is secure.
- Is there another purpose? Check whether information is used beyond the age decision and whether that use is explained.
- What if it fails? Is there an alternative route, human review or way to contest an incorrect result?
- Which law and regulator apply? Privacy requirements vary by jurisdiction. Guidance from a regulator in one country should not be treated as a description of the law everywhere.
If a notice does not answer one of these questions, treat that as an information gap—not proof that the provider collects or retains the most intrusive data. Equally, a privacy claim in a product description is not a substitute for checking what the site and provider say happens in the flow you are using.
What to remember about age checks
An online age prompt can range from a declaration to a document-backed check, and those methods do not expose the same information. The key privacy distinction is between what a provider needs to process to make a decision and what the website ultimately receives. Some credential systems are designed to reveal only that a threshold is met, but that design should not be assumed for other services. Check the current notices for collection, recipients, retention, secondary use, alternatives and review options; legal duties depend on where the service operates and which rules apply.
