How One Team Reported Reducing an App’s Crash Rate from 2% to 0.1%

A Luma Commons case study recounts how one retail banking app team tackled crash-reporting gaps, concurrency, memory pressure, and an analytics SDK issue before reporting a decline from about 2% to 0.1%.

A retail banking app’s reported crash rate fell from about 2% to 0.1% over a three-month engagement, according to a case study published by Luma Commons on August 15, 2025. The account describes a practical sequence: repair crash-reporting visibility, address concurrency and memory problems, audit a third-party SDK, then watch each release for regressions. The figures and causes are the case-study author’s account, not independently verified results or a guarantee that the same changes will produce the same outcome elsewhere.

What the case study says changed

Author Nikhil Nangia reports that the app had roughly 400,000 monthly active users and that about 8,000 user sessions per month ended in a crash at the roughly 2% baseline. The article does not fully define the crash-rate denominator or measurement method, so those figures cannot be independently recalculated from the account.

After a three-month engagement, the author reports a crash rate of 0.1%. The article does not provide independent telemetry, client confirmation, a comparison group, or a formal metric definition. Treat the reduction as a reported case-study outcome rather than a verified benchmark.

Why the team fixed reporting before fixing code

The crash-reporting SDK was two major versions behind, incorrectly configured, and producing reports with broken symbolication. Without symbolicated reports, the team could not reliably connect crashes to the relevant source code. Nangia summarizes the lesson: “You can’t fix what you can’t see.”

The package includes the P1 thermal camera, a zipper case, a 50cm extension cable, and a quick start guide.

The team updated the SDK, configured dSYM uploads in continuous integration, added user-action breadcrumbs, and began monitoring memory, CPU, and network response times. They waited three days after improving instrumentation to look for recurring patterns. This made the later diagnosis more evidence-led than guessing from user complaints such as “Crashes every time I check my balance” or “App freezes then closes”; those complaints are reproduced in the author’s narrative, not independently collected review data.

Which causes accounted for the reported crashes

Nangia attributes the crashes to four broad categories. These percentages are rounded shares reported by the author, not an independently audited breakdown.

Reported cause Share of crashes What the account describes
Core Data concurrency About 45% A shared managed object context was accessed by background writes and main-thread UI reads.
Memory pressure About 30% Long transaction histories, large JSON responses, model creation, and long-list rendering put pressure on older devices.
Analytics SDK file handles About 15% A third-party analytics SDK reportedly failed to close file handles on some error paths.
Assorted issues About 10% Included force-unwrapped optionals, a deep-linking race, and system-framework crashes associated with particular OS and device conditions.

How the team addressed the main failure patterns

Separate Core Data work by context

For the concurrency problems, the team restructured the Core Data stack so writes used a private background context and reads used a main-queue context. They added merge notifications and debug-time thread assertions. These changes target the reported conflict between background updates and UI reads; the article does not specify implementation details beyond that description.

Reduce memory demands when loading transaction histories

To address memory pressure on older devices, the team paginated history in batches of 50 transactions, parsed data lazily for visible cells, and released cached images and other nonessential data when the app received memory warnings. It also segmented monitoring by device model and iOS version, helping distinguish problems affecting older hardware or particular OS releases.

Update and monitor the analytics SDK

The team updated the analytics SDK to a version where, according to the author, the file-handle issue had been fixed. It also added periodic file-descriptor monitoring. The account does not name the SDK or version, so it does not support a vendor-specific recommendation.

Track the remaining defects

The other reported issues included force-unwrapped optionals, a deep-linking race, and crashes associated with particular system-framework, OS, and device conditions. The account does not give a fix for each of these cases. Its broader lesson is to keep reviewing recurring crash signatures rather than assuming the largest categories explain every failure.

How to apply the approach to another app

  1. Make crash reports actionable. Check that the reporting SDK is current and correctly configured, verify symbolication, and ensure dSYM files are uploaded as part of the build or release process.
  2. Add context to each failure. Capture useful user-action breadcrumbs and monitor memory, CPU, and network response times so a crash signature can be investigated alongside what the app was doing.
  3. Look for patterns by environment. Segment crashes and resource data by release, device model, and OS version; an overall rate can hide a problem concentrated among older devices or a specific software version.
  4. Investigate resource and concurrency risks. Review background data updates that interact with UI reads, and examine large responses, long histories, caches, and expensive list rendering under memory pressure.
  5. Audit dependencies as well as app code. Review third-party SDK updates and error handling, and monitor relevant resources such as file descriptors when they are implicated.
  6. Verify fixes after shipping. Compare releases, inspect recurring crash signatures, and check whether changes improve stability without creating regressions in existing data flows or on older devices.

These are practices drawn from one account, not controlled evidence that this exact order or any individual fix will achieve a particular crash-rate reduction. The case study does not compare monitoring vendors or quantify the cost and operational burden of additional instrumentation.

How the team monitored stability after changes

Nangia says the team used real-time alerts when the crash rate reached 0.3% over a rolling four-hour window, compared each release during its first 48 hours, flagged an investigation when average memory use rose by more than 15%, and reviewed the five leading crash signatures weekly. These were that team’s chosen settings, not universal thresholds or external standards. Teams should set alert criteria to fit their own app, user impact, and measurement practices.
