How One Next.js Static Export Can Power 118 Developer Tools

Bob Kim’s devpick.sh uses one Next.js route per browser tool, a build-time metadata audit, generated sitemap and shared structured data to ship a large static tool collection.

Bob Kim’s devpick.sh shows one way to maintain a large collection of browser-based utilities without building a separate app for every tool: keep each tool on its own route in a single Next.js project, generate a static export, and make a build-time SEO audit part of deployment. Kim says the site contains 118 tools, including a JSON formatter, cron explainer, subnet calculator, and UTM builder. His account is an implementation example, not an independent code audit or performance study.

How the 118-tool project is organized

Kim describes a route-per-tool convention rather than a generalized tool framework. A tool lives in its own folder, with an app/<tool-name>/page.tsx page and, when needed, a separate client component. Each page supplies its own metadata, while the tool logic runs in the browser.

The trade-off is deliberate: a shared framework might reduce repeated scaffolding, but Kim says the tools differ enough that he chose not to build one. A consistent folder and file convention provides a predictable place for each tool without forcing distinct behaviors into a universal abstraction.

How the static build and deployment fit together

Kim reports this build chain: next build && next-sitemap && npm run audit:seo. In Next.js, static export is enabled by setting output: 'export' in the configuration and running next build; the framework writes the exported files to out by default. Those files can be served by a web server that serves HTML, CSS, and JavaScript assets. See the Next.js static exports guide.

Cloudflare documents a deployment path for static Next.js exports on Pages, where commits can trigger rebuilds and deployments. That establishes a supported route to deploy this kind of project, not the exact configuration or bill for devpick.sh. See Cloudflare’s static Next.js deployment guide.

Know what static export cannot do

Static export serves prebuilt files; it does not provide a Node server for request-time work. Next.js lists features that are unsupported in this mode, including API routes, rewrites, redirects, headers, middleware, incremental static regeneration, draft mode, default image optimization, and server-side rendering features. Check the current support list against the requirements of each feature before choosing this architecture.

Make metadata checks fail the build

Kim says his custom SEO audit checks that every page has a title and a unique title, a description below about 160 characters, a canonical URL, and valid breadcrumb JSON-LD. If a check fails, the script exits non-zero and blocks deployment. He gives a revised UTM-tool description as an example of a change that exposed a regression.

This turns page-level metadata from a manual review item into a build requirement. The threshold and checks are Kim’s implementation choices; passing them does not establish search ranking gains.

Generate the sitemap and structured data from shared code

Kim says next-sitemap builds a sitemap from the route tree, reporting 118 sitemap URLs for the site rather than maintaining a separate hand-written URL list. A shared ToolLayout emits WebApplication JSON-LD for tools and BreadcrumbList data. Together, the route convention and shared layout reduce repetitive route bookkeeping; they are not evidence that search visibility improved.

Keep analytics events narrow

Kim says Google Analytics receives page views and tool outcomes such as completed and errored, with simple scalar parameters. He says the payload omits tool inputs, filenames, and generated outputs. That describes an intended payload discipline, not an independently verified end-to-end privacy guarantee; teams adopting it should still inspect what their implementation actually sends.

What the project says about MCP and shareable tool state

MCP coverage is an experiment, not proof of demand

Kim reports wrapping 43 of the tools as MCP tools. He describes demand as unproven and says he may remove the MCP server if it becomes stale. The figure is a snapshot from his 2026 account, not evidence of validated user adoption.

Put useful state in the URL when sharing matters

Kim says URL query-string syncing began recently, starting with the UTM builder, and that he wished he had added shareable state earlier. For tools where configuration is useful to send to someone else, query parameters can make a particular setup linkable; this is his retrospective recommendation, not a claim that every tool should serialize its state.

What to weigh before adopting the same architecture

Kim says he picked Next.js because he knew it and wanted to ship quickly; he suggests Astro might be lighter, but does not report a controlled comparison. Treat relative framework weight and speed as unverified until measured against your own routes and requirements.

  • Team familiarity: A familiar framework can reduce the cost of getting the first version live.
  • Route-level needs: Consider whether each tool needs its own metadata and whether shared layouts cover genuinely common behavior without flattening meaningful differences.
  • Feature compatibility: Confirm that required functionality works in static-export mode rather than relying on server-dependent features.
  • Build characteristics: Kim describes the build for 118 pages as taking “a few minutes,” but provides no controlled benchmark. Measure build time on your own project and deployment pipeline.
  • Hosting behavior: Confirm that a host serves static assets, handles route paths and 404s as needed, automates builds from source control, and meets your domain and caching requirements.

Kim describes the project as having “No backend, no database, hosting costs about $0.” That is his self-reported cost, not an independently verified bill or a guarantee for other sites.
