How One Explicit Invariant Can Clarify a Repeatedly Rejected Feature

A reported seven-rejection audit story points to a practical technique: state the condition the software must preserve, then connect it to implementation and tests.

The title describes a personal account: an independent auditor rejected a small feature seven times, and the author says one invariant resolved the impasse. The feature, the invariant, and the auditor’s objections are not identified, so the episode cannot establish why the rejections happened or whether the same approach will work elsewhere. It does point to a useful engineering idea: state the condition that must remain true, then make the implementation, tests, and review criteria answer to it.

What a software invariant means

An invariant is a condition that should remain true across the program states where it applies. For an object, Microsoft’s Code Contracts documentation defines object invariants as conditions that should hold whenever the object is visible to a client. That framing is useful because it focuses on what callers can observe, rather than on how the implementation happens to be arranged. Microsoft’s Code Contracts documentation

For example, a generic account object might require that its recorded balance never be below an allowed limit. That condition is not a particular test input or a line of code; it is a rule the object must preserve whenever it is exposed. The example illustrates the concept only and does not identify the feature in the title.

Why a small feature can raise a broader review question

A feature may add little code while changing several operations or states. A reviewer may need to know not just whether the new path works, but whether it leaves the surrounding system in a valid state. In Design by Contract, Eiffel’s explanation says routines must restore the class invariant on exit. This makes the invariant a condition that can span operations, not just a check attached to one example. Eiffel’s Design by Contract explanation

A clear invariant can therefore make a review discussion more concrete: what must be true before an operation, what may change, and what must still be true when the operation completes? The title does not reveal the actual invariant or the auditor’s comments, so that is a general way to interpret the anecdote, not a reconstruction of what happened.

How to make an invariant reviewable

  1. Name the observable property. Describe a condition that can be true or false from the perspective of callers or users, rather than saying only that the code should be “safe” or “correct.”
  2. Define when it applies. Specify the relevant objects, operations, and states. A rule that applies only after a successful operation differs from one that must hold whenever an object is visible.
  3. Connect implementation choices to the property. Explain which operations can affect it and how they preserve it. This gives reviewers a focused path through the change.
  4. Ask how it could be violated. Consider unusual inputs, error paths, and transitions between states. Akka’s adequacy-review guidance asks whether a check could pass while its invariant is false; that is a useful adversarial prompt, though it is an Akka-specific process document rather than an industry-wide requirement. Akka’s adequacy-review guidance
  5. Make the evidence visible. Point reviewers to the contract, assertions, tests, or analysis that address the property, and be clear about what each does—and does not—establish.

Contracts, tests, and analysis check different things

An invariant is the property; a contract or test is one way to express or check it. Microsoft documents Contract.Invariant as specifying an invariant contract for an enclosing method or property. Its Code Contracts system requires a binary rewriter for runtime enforcement, so the API documentation should not be taken to mean that runtime checks are automatically active in every project. Microsoft’s Contract.Invariant API documentation

Tests can exercise the property across selected cases. Property-based testing generates scenarios to check whether a defined property holds; Ethereum.org defines it as “the process of checking that a smart contract satisfies some defined property.” Generated cases can broaden input variation, but test results are evidence from exercised scenarios, not proof of total correctness. Ethereum.org also notes that manual testing can catch edge cases automated tools miss. Ethereum.org’s smart-contract testing guide

Static analysis, runtime checks, and tests have different scopes and timing. Ethereum.org discusses static and dynamic analysis separately from property-based testing, and treats formal verification as a distinct method that checks a program against a formal model. None should be casually substituted for another; the relevant question is which evidence addresses the stated invariant and under what conditions.

What a reviewer needs besides the invariant

A shared property helps only when the work product and review criteria are understandable. ISO/IEC 20246:2017 provides a generic framework for work product reviews; the ISO catalogue says that the 2017 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022 and remains current. It offers context for why review effectiveness involves more than a single clever condition: reviewers need a clear artifact and a defined basis for assessing it. ISO/IEC 20246:2017

For a code change, that can mean making the expected behavior explicit, showing where the change affects state, and indicating how the relevant property is checked. A compact invariant may align those pieces and keep discussion from drifting into implementation preference. It cannot by itself guarantee that a review is complete or that the code is correct.

What the seven-rejection anecdote establishes—and what it does not

The account is the author’s reported experience, not an independently verified case study. It does not disclose the language, feature, auditor identity, rejection notes, or the content of the invariant. The number of rejections belongs to that personal account; it is not evidence that repeated review failures generally have one cause.

The defensible lesson is narrower: if reviewers disagree about what must remain true, writing that condition down can give implementation, tests, and review a common target. Whether that was precisely what resolved this particular audit cannot be established from the title alone.
