Olympic-style recurve archery has two main phases: a 72-arrow qualification round ranks the archers and seeds the knockout bracket, then head-to-head matches decide who advances. Individual matches are scored in set points—not by adding every arrow across the match—and a 5–5 tie is settled with a one-arrow shoot-off.
What happens in the qualification round?
Qualification, also called the ranking round, ranks the competitors; it does not itself eliminate them. In outdoor recurve, each archer shoots 72 arrows at 70 metres on a 122-centimetre target face. World Archery’s Olympic explainer describes the round as 12 ends of six arrows, for a maximum possible score of 720. The total points determine the ranking and matchplay seeds. A seed is an archer’s position in the bracket, based on qualification ranking. It determines the opponent and place in the matchplay draw; it is not a head start in scoring. The exact field size and qualification pathway can vary by event regulations, so the bracket is not necessarily identical at every competition.

Archers face an opponent in a head-to-head match. The winner advances to the next round and the loser is eliminated. Qualification score establishes bracket placement, but the match itself is decided by its match-scoring format.

How is an individual recurve match scored?
An individual match is made up of sets of three arrows per archer. Officials compare the two archers’ arrow totals for each set:
- Win the set: earn 2 set points.
- Tie the set: each archer earns 1 set point.
- Lose the set: earn 0 set points.
The first archer to reach 6 set points wins. Because each set win is worth two points regardless of the margin, the total score across all arrows is not what decides the match. An archer can therefore win the match without having the higher cumulative arrow total. (World Archery’s recurve overview; World Archery’s Olympics overview)

What happens at 5–5?
If the archers are tied at five set points each after five sets, each shoots one arrow. The arrow nearer the centre wins. If officials cannot determine which arrow is closer, they may call another shoot-off. (World Archery’s Olympics overview; World Archery’s Paris 2024 guide)
How do mixed-team and team matches differ?
Team formats use more arrows per set than individual matches, but still award set points rather than deciding the match on a running arrow total. In the standard Olympic description, a mixed team has one man and one woman; a team has three archers of the same gender.

|---|---|---|
| Individual | 3 per archer | 6 |
| Mixed team | 4 total: 2 per athlete | 5 |
| Team | 6 total: 2 per athlete | 5 |
A team that reaches four set points apiece after four sets shoots a tiebreak. Each athlete shoots one arrow. The higher combined tiebreak score wins; if the teams’ totals are tied, officials compare the closest arrow to the centre, then further arrows as needed under the published procedure.
