In the United States, higher crude oil prices usually push gasoline prices up because crude is typically the largest part of what drivers pay. Gasoline then raises headline inflation directly as an energy item. Neither effect is automatic or immediate: refinery margins, inventories, taxes, seasonal demand and local conditions shape the pump price, while energy’s wider pass-through into core inflation is generally small and delayed.
How crude oil reaches the pump
Refiners buy crude oil and process it into gasoline. A retail gallon also reflects refining, distribution and marketing, and taxes. In its 2022 breakdown, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated crude oil accounted for 57% of the retail gasoline price and refinery margins for 18%; both shares vary over time and by region. See EIA’s explanation of gasoline costs and household spending.

EIA offers a rough conversion: a $1-per-barrel change in crude oil corresponds to about 2.4 cents per gallon, assuming other components stay fixed. That is arithmetic based on the 42 gallons in a barrel, not a prediction of the change at a particular station. Pump prices also reflect wholesale gasoline prices, margins, taxes, transportation and retail conditions. The conversion is described on EIA’s gasoline-price factors page.
Why pump prices do not move in lockstep with oil
Pass-through takes time
Retail stations buy fuel through wholesale markets, so a crude-price change need not appear at the pump immediately. In a June 2012 explanation, EIA said roughly 50% of a crude-price change was usually reflected in gasoline prices within two weeks and 80% within four weeks. Treat those as approximate historical guidance, not a universal timetable or a current forecast. EIA’s 2012 explanation of the lag describes the estimate.

Refining margins and supply can offset or amplify crude moves
The margin between crude oil and wholesale gasoline prices can change independently of crude. A crack spread is one common measure of that difference and an indicator of refining profitability. Refinery disruptions or tight gasoline supplies can push the spread higher, raising pump prices even if crude is not the only factor moving.
For a time-sensitive example, on September 4, 2026, EIA reported that the New York Harbor gasoline crack spread had averaged about $1 per gallon more since May than in 2025, when it had peaked around 60 cents per gallon. EIA attributed the elevated spreads primarily to tight global gasoline supply associated with refining disruptions. These are dated market observations, not lasting benchmarks. EIA’s September 2026 market report gives the context.

Other influences vary by place and season
- Inventories and seasonal demand: Tight stocks or stronger seasonal demand can affect wholesale prices and margins.
- Fuel specifications: Regional gasoline formulations can limit how easily fuel is shifted between markets.
- Taxes and distribution: Federal, state and local taxes, plus the cost of moving and marketing fuel, contribute to the price drivers see.
- Local market conditions: Competition and supply constraints can make prices differ between areas.
Taxes are especially location-dependent. EIA’s gasoline factors page reports a federal motor-gasoline tax of 18.40 cents per gallon and an average of 33.55 cents per gallon in state gasoline taxes and fees as of January 2026; local and sales taxes may add more. These figures are not a single nationwide total for every driver. EIA lists the tax figures and other price factors.

U.S. gasoline prices are linked to global markets, not only to the price of a domestic crude benchmark. In a study of four U.S. regions, EIA found Brent, an international benchmark, was more important than West Texas Intermediate (WTI), a domestic benchmark, in explaining gasoline prices—including in the Midwest. That is a finding for the regions and period studied, not a claim that local crude grades and regional constraints never matter. EIA’s study of U.S. gasoline prices explains its comparison.

How gasoline prices affect inflation
The direct effect is on headline inflation
Gasoline is an energy item in consumer price measures, so a price rise directly increases headline inflation while prices are rising or remain above their previous level. Inflation measures the rate of price change: if gasoline prices rise once and then stop rising, their contribution to the inflation rate fades over time, all else equal. That does not mean the price level returns to where it was.
The indirect effect on other prices is less certain and slower
Businesses use fuel and transportation, and energy can be part of manufacturing and food-production costs. Firms may pass some of those costs into the prices of goods and services. In its February 2016 Monetary Policy Report, the Federal Reserve described empirical estimates of energy-cost pass-through into core inflation as generally quite small, with long and variable lags. That assessment is historical research context, not a precise estimate for every energy shock. The Federal Reserve’s 2016 report discusses the pass-through.

In a March 26, 2026 speech, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip N. Jefferson said energy costs reach transportation, manufacturing and food production, and that sustained elevated energy prices could put upward pressure on other prices. He noted that the broader effects depend greatly on how long energy prices remain elevated. This is policy commentary, not a measured causal estimate or a forecast. Jefferson’s speech on the economic outlook and energy effects gives his remarks.

What this means for household budgets
Higher gasoline prices can reduce the money a household has available for other purchases. That purchasing-power squeeze is an economic effect, not itself an inflation statistic. Jefferson noted in his 2026 speech that lower-income households devote a larger share of spending to essentials and may face more tradeoffs when energy prices stay elevated.

The duration of a shock matters. A brief increase may have limited wider effects; a sustained increase can keep fuel expenses high and add pressure to business costs. The size of any broader inflation effect depends on how long energy prices remain elevated and how businesses respond.
A practical way to interpret a gasoline-price move
- Check crude prices, but do not stop there. Crude is usually the largest component, yet it is only one part of the retail price.
- Look at refining and gasoline supply. Disruptions, tight inventories or wider refining margins can lift gasoline prices independently of a crude move.
- Allow for a lag. Historical EIA estimates describe pass-through over weeks, not an instantaneous one-for-one change.
- Separate inflation channels. A gasoline increase directly affects headline inflation; its effect on core prices is generally smaller, delayed and dependent on how persistent the energy shock is.
A dated example: 2024 U.S. gasoline prices
EIA reported that the U.S. retail price of regular gasoline averaged $3.30 per gallon in 2024, 21 cents below the 2023 average. EIA said lower crude prices and narrower refinery margins both contributed to the decline. This example shows why a change at the pump should not be attributed to crude alone; it is a historical annual average, not a current price. EIA’s January 2025 summary of 2024 gasoline prices provides the figures and explanation.
