How Often Should You Get a Cholesterol Test?

Most healthy adults should consider a cholesterol test every 4–6 years, while age, risk factors, children’s screening guidance and medication monitoring can change the timing.

For most healthy adults, a cholesterol test every 4–6 years is a reasonable general interval, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Your schedule may need to be more frequent based on age, prior results, heart disease, diabetes, family history, other risk factors, or cholesterol medication. Ask a clinician to set an interval for your situation.

What a cholesterol test checks

A cholesterol test is a blood test called a lipid panel or lipid profile. High cholesterol often causes no symptoms, so a test is how you learn your levels. The CDC says most healthy adults should have their cholesterol checked every 4–6 years. CDC: Testing for Cholesterol

How often adults should be tested

Recommendations differ somewhat by age. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) gives this general age-based guide:

Group General interval
Younger adults Every five years
Men aged 45–65 and women aged 55–65 Every 1–2 years
Adults older than 65 Yearly

These are general guides, not personalized orders. NHLBI says testing frequency depends on age, risk factors, and family history of high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease. Its guidance does not establish one interval for everyone with a risk factor. NHLBI: Blood Cholesterol—Diagnosis

When a shorter interval may be appropriate

Heart disease, diabetes, a family history of high cholesterol, or other cardiovascular risk factors may lead a clinician to recommend more frequent testing. The appropriate timing depends on your health history and results; do not assume a particular risk factor automatically means a specific testing schedule.

When children and teens should be tested

CDC says children should have cholesterol checked at least once between ages 9 and 11, and adolescents between ages 17 and 21. NHLBI recommends screening at ages 9–11 and repeating it every five years for people 19 or younger. When a child has a family history of high cholesterol, heart attack, or stroke, NHLBI says screening may begin as early as age 2. CDC: Testing for Cholesterol · NHLBI: Blood Cholesterol—Diagnosis

HOMEDSUN HSTCM101 Total Cholesterol Monitor Kit with 10 Strips Lancets
  • IMPORTANT CODE CHIP SETUP: To ensure the meter reads the correct code, always INSERT the code chip while the meter is turned OFF. Ensure the side with the code number (e.g., 602) is facing UP when inserting. Inserting the chip with the "CODE" text side facing up is incorrect and will cause an error code!
  • Advanced Electrochemical Sensing Technology: This total cholesterol meter utilizes state-of-the-art electrochemical sensor technology to provide professional-grade accuracy for monitoring cholesterol levels at home. It is designed to quantitatively measure total cholesterol using fresh capillary or venous whole blood, offering a reliable aid for managing your cardiovascular health.
  • Fast Results with Tiny Blood Sample: Get your total cholesterol readings in just 25 seconds. The system requires only a tiny 1μL blood sample, minimizing discomfort during testing. The pre-suction siphon design of the test strips ensures blood is applied easily and effectively every time.
  • Comprehensive Data Tracking: Stay on top of your health trends with a large internal memory that stores up to 500 test results. The meter automatically calculates 7, 14, and 28-day averages, allowing you and your healthcare provider to easily monitor the effectiveness of your cholesterol control over time. Perfect for proactive lipid management, helping you track the key component of your lipid profile alongside a heart-healthy diet.
  • User-Friendly Design & Large LCD: Features an easy-to-read, large LCD screen that guides you through the testing process with clear symbols and reminders. For added convenience, the device includes an automatic shut-off feature after 3 minutes of inactivity and a low-battery warning to ensure you are never caught off guard.

There is a difference between these screening recommendations and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) position. In 2023, the USPSTF concluded that evidence was insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening asymptomatic children and adolescents aged 20 or younger. An “I statement” means the evidence is insufficient to determine the net benefit; it is not a recommendation against testing. The USPSTF notes that NHLBI, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Bright Futures program, and multisociety cholesterol guidelines recommend selective screening for risk factors and universal screening at ages 9–11 and 17–21. Testing after starting cholesterol medication

A test used to monitor treatment is different from routine screening. NHLBI says a provider may order a lipid panel 1–3 months after starting a statin or another cholesterol medicine to see whether it is working. Follow the treating clinician’s plan for subsequent monitoring, and discuss results with them rather than changing medication on your own. NHLBI: Blood Cholesterol—Living With High Cholesterol
