Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For ordinary HVAC adjustments, start with an update about once a minute if your station and integration provide new readings at least that often. There is no universal interval: match automation timing to the station’s actual reporting cadence and how its data reaches Home Assistant. Polling more often cannot make an unchanged or stale reading fresher.
What determines how quickly an automation gets a reading?
A reading passes through several stages: the station samples its sensors, its console or gateway publishes the result, the integration receives or fetches it, Home Assistant updates the entity, and the automation evaluates its trigger and conditions. The slowest or least frequent stage sets the practical freshness of the value available to your automation.

Home Assistant distinguishes push updates, where a source notifies the platform when data is available, from polling, where the platform fetches data on a schedule. Its developer guidance says an appropriate polling interval depends on the device or service; polling a source every five seconds, or polling data that changes hourly every minute, can be wasteful: Home Assistant’s polling guidance.

Push delivery from a local station
If both the station console and Home Assistant integration support local push, the station can send readings as they become available instead of waiting for Home Assistant to request them. Home Assistant notes that push can avoid repeated fetching and reduce resource use. Station-side uploads and integration-side polling are different mechanisms, so confirm that the complete setup is configured for push.

- [3-channel Home Weather Stations Wireless Indoor Outdoor] Wireless temperature forecast station supports up to 3 remote sensors to monitor inside outside temperature & humidity of multiple locations. Package contains one remote sensor.
- [Wireless Forecast Station] The weather forecast station calculates the weather forecast for the next 12-24 hours, 7 to 10 days calibration ensures an accurate personal forecast for your location.
- [Wireless Weather Station with Atomic Time&Date] Atomic alarm clock weather station can be used not only as a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer but also as an atomic clock with dual alarms.
For example, Ecowitt’s 2024 WS View Plus and Web UI manual shows a configurable console upload to a Home Assistant server on the local network, using an 8-second upload interval: Ecowitt manual. That is one documented configuration—not a universal default or compatibility guarantee, and it does not mean an HVAC automation will run within eight seconds. The end-to-end timing also depends on the rest of the data path.
Polling an endpoint
With polling, the integration checks for data at its configured interval. If it checks more often than the station or service publishes new readings, it may retrieve the same value repeatedly without improving freshness.

What interval should you choose?
About one minute is a practical starting point for routine temperature- or humidity-based HVAC adjustments when the integration polls and the source updates at least that frequently. This is a recommendation, not a Home Assistant requirement, manufacturer specification, or measured HVAC performance result. Home Assistant’s developer guidance emphasizes that a suitable interval depends on the polled source.
Recommended Free Tools
- Find the source cadence: Check how often your station samples and publishes readings, and how often the integration receives them.
- Match polling to available updates: If the station publishes every several minutes, polling every few seconds usually adds requests, not freshness.
- Check service limits: For cloud endpoints, follow the provider’s documented cadence and request limits. Excessive polling can consume resources, burden a device, or cause a cloud API to block requests, as Home Assistant’s developer guidance cautions.
- Choose for the control decision: Consider how much delay the HVAC adjustment can tolerate. Faster updates can reduce delay after a new reading arrives, but do not improve sensor accuracy or guarantee better HVAC control.
Home Assistant examples: REST sensors and cloud weather
RESTful Sensor
Home Assistant’s RESTful Sensor uses scan_interval to set how often it calls an endpoint; the documented default is 30 seconds. Set the interval according to the endpoint’s data freshness and request limits. The integration also supports a manual homeassistant.update_entity call for an immediate refresh when there is a reason to request one.

force_update is not a faster polling setting. It emits state-change events on each scheduled poll even when the returned value is unchanged; it does not increase the polling frequency.
AccuWeather integration
Home Assistant’s AccuWeather documentation lists polling intervals of 10 minutes for current conditions, 30 minutes for hourly forecasts, and 6 hours for daily forecasts. The integration requires a paid subscription. These cloud-data intervals illustrate why polling your own integration more frequently cannot make the provider generate a newer reading sooner.

Keep telemetry frequent without making HVAC control twitchy
Receiving readings often does not require the HVAC automation to react to every small fluctuation. Separate the update cadence from the control logic: thresholds, hysteresis, debounce behavior, or minimum run times can help prevent repeated reactions to minor changes. These are control-design options rather than prescribed values; choose them for your equipment and setup. Weather-station timing should not be treated as HVAC safety protection.

Quick decision checklist
- Identify whether the integration uses push or polling, and find the station’s actual upload or reporting cadence.
- If local push is supported by both the station setup and integration, consider it to avoid repeated fetches.
- If polling, begin around one minute for routine adjustments only when the source updates at least that often; otherwise align the schedule with the slower source cadence.
- For a RESTful Sensor, configure
scan_intervalto suit endpoint freshness and limits; do not useforce_updateto try to poll faster. - Set automation thresholds and timing so minor variations do not cause unnecessary control changes.
