Choose a weather station by its Home Assistant integration—not just by the brand name or the readings printed on the box. Check the exact gateway and sensor compatibility, whether data reaches Home Assistant locally or through a vendor cloud, and whether your network can support the setup. Ecowitt is a documented local-push option; WeatherFlow Tempest’s integration is local-only. Ambient Weather and Netatmo use cloud-based integrations, though Home Assistant documents a local ecowitt2mqtt route for Ambient Weather.
Start with how the station connects
The integration determines where your measurements travel, what network setup is required, and whether a vendor account or API credentials are involved. “Works with Home Assistant” is not enough detail: the built-in integration may use a different route from a community or intermediary option.

| Option | How Home Assistant receives data | Setup and dependencies |
|---|---|---|
| Ecowitt | Local Push: the station sends readings to a callback on your Home Assistant instance. | Configure the callback destination and make it reachable over HTTP. Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS for these uploads. Home Assistant’s Ecowitt documentation |
| WeatherFlow Tempest | Local-only integration that reads compatible stations on the local network using UDP. | Home Assistant must be able to receive the local network traffic. The app may show different values because it also incorporates forecasts and nearby stations. Home Assistant’s WeatherFlow documentation |
| Ambient Weather Station | The built-in integration communicates through Ambient Weather Cloud. | Requires an Application Key and an API Key. Home Assistant also identifies ecowitt2mqtt in ambient_weather mode as a local option. Home Assistant’s Ambient Weather Station documentation |
| Netatmo | The integration communicates with Netatmo’s cloud service. | Requires a Netatmo account and an active internet connection. Station sensor data is included in a broader smart-home integration. Home Assistant’s Netatmo documentation |
If avoiding vendor-cloud dependence is important, focus first on Ecowitt or WeatherFlow’s documented integrations. For Ambient Weather, distinguish the cloud-based built-in integration from the documented ecowitt2mqtt local route; do not assume every setup path has the same privacy or network behavior.

Compatibility is specific to hardware combinations, not just a manufacturer. Home Assistant lists Ecowitt GW1200, GW2000, and GW3000 gateways, and WS90, WH40, WH51, and WH57 sensors as devices reported to work. Check the current supported-device list and the precise kit contents before buying; a product listing may bundle a different gateway or omit sensors you need.

Ecowitt: callback and HTTP reachability
Ecowitt sends data to a callback destination configured in Home Assistant. Setup can be completed through the Ecowitt app or the device’s web interface. The integration exposes the callback host, path and port; configure the station to use a route that Home Assistant can actually receive.

- Featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Popular Mechanics, The Spruce and Wired, the 2026 Tempest Weather Station is trusted by leading experts and loved by more than 90,000 users who rely on it for accurate, hyper-local weather every day.
- Monitors temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, dew point, solar radiation, UV index, lightning strikes, rainfall, and more - all from a single device.
- The solar-powered outdoor sensor transmits wirelessly up to 1,000+ feet and delivers real-time updates every 3 seconds.
- Built with no moving parts, Tempest is engineered for years of near-zero maintenance and reliable performance in any environment.
- Seamlessly integrates with Amazon Alexa, Rachio, IFTTT, and popular smart home platforms - automate lights, thermostats, irrigation, and more using real-time weather from your backyard Tempest.
A key limitation is that Ecowitt devices do not support HTTPS connections to Home Assistant for these uploads. If your Home Assistant instance is HTTPS-only, you need an HTTP route the station can use, such as a suitable reverse-proxy configuration. Consider that requirement before purchase if your network deliberately blocks HTTP.

WeatherFlow: local UDP traffic
WeatherFlow’s integration reads compatible Tempest data over UDP on the local network. Check that your network layout permits the relevant devices and Home Assistant to communicate locally; network segmentation or filtering can prevent discovery or delivery even when internet access works.

Cloud integrations: credentials and connectivity
Ambient Weather’s built-in integration depends on its cloud service and API credentials. Netatmo’s integration likewise depends on its cloud service, plus an account and active internet access. These routes may be a better fit if you already use the vendor’s services, but they are not equivalent to receiving station data solely over your home network.
Choose measurements for the job
Decide which observations you will use in automations, dashboards or alerts, then check that the station’s included and optional hardware can provide them. A garden-watering setup may need soil-moisture sensors; rain monitoring needs a rain sensor; wind, UV or solar tracking calls for the corresponding sensor capability. A sensor listed as compatible is not necessarily included with the gateway or station bundle.

- Allows you to monitor your home and backyard weather conditions with TFT color display
- Wireless all-in-one integrated sensor array measures wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, UV and solar radiation
- Supports both imperial and metric units of measure with calibration available
- Enhanced Wi-Fi connectability option that enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to the world's largest personal weather station network

Do not confuse the Weather integration with station support
Home Assistant’s generic Weather integration is a building block used by other integrations to provide weather conditions and related functionality. It is not the integration to add as a direct connection to a physical station. Follow the instructions for the station or provider integration that supports your hardware.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Find the exact integration name and verify your station’s gateway and sensor models against its supported-device documentation.
- Choose deliberately between local data delivery and a cloud-dependent route; account for any required vendor account, API key or application key.
- Confirm that your Home Assistant network can receive the station’s traffic, including Ecowitt’s HTTP callback or WeatherFlow’s local UDP data where applicable.
- Match the included sensors and available add-ons to the measurements you actually need; do not infer bundle contents from a compatibility list.
- Check the live product listing for regional availability, current contents, warranty and price. These can vary and are not established by integration documentation.
