Octopuses solve problems by combining unusually rich sensing with learning and behavioral flexibility. Their eyes discriminate visual patterns, their arms and suckers detect mechanical and chemical cues during contact, and recent work indicates that the arms can also respond directly to light. In controlled experiments, octopuses have learned food-retrieval tasks, changed their behavior when the same task was rearranged, and used both visual and tactile experience when learning about objects.

Those results show flexible performance, not proof that octopuses reason like humans. The strongest conclusions come from specific species performing specific tasks under controlled conditions. The evidence supports sophisticated perception, discrimination, learning and adaptation, while questions about mental representations, general reasoning and the duration of memory remain open.

How do octopuses solve problems?

An octopus approaches a problem through a loop of sensing, acting and updating behavior. It can inspect an object visually, reach with one or more arms, use suckers to test a surface, detect chemicals released by potential prey, and retain information from earlier attempts. If access changes, the animal may alter its route or handling strategy. Researchers call this behavioral flexibility when performance adapts to a changed condition.

The clearest demonstration is a 2016 experiment on seven wild-caught common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris). Each animal learned to open an L-shaped container to obtain food. The researchers then changed the puzzle’s orientation, restricted access with an opaque barrier, and randomized the orientation. Every octopus reached the researchers’ success criterion at each stage, although performance changed as the conditions changed. The authors concluded that the animals “show behavioral flexibility by quickly adapting to a change in a task” (Richter et al., 2016).

That experiment does not establish that the octopuses imagined a three-dimensional solution, planned several moves ahead or used human-like causal reasoning. The animals could have combined previous learning with trial-and-error, learned a generalized action rule, or used some form of internal representation. The study itself leaves those alternatives unresolved. A careful answer to “How do octopuses solve problems?” is therefore: they use multiple senses and experience to adjust actions successfully in tested situations, but the cognitive mechanism behind that adjustment is not always known.

What senses give an octopus information for problem solving?

Vision identifies targets and patterns

Vision supplies information at a distance. Octopuses can discriminate visual stimuli, and their visual system can detect polarization contrast. In a 1996 conditioning experiment, octopuses learned to distinguish targets by polarization contrast and transferred that discrimination to new situations. The authors proposed that polarization vision could help with object detection and recognition (Shashar and Cronin, 1996).

Polarization vision should not be described as an octopus equivalent of human color vision. It is a different property of light, and the experiment demonstrated discrimination and transfer under the tested conditions. The important problem-solving consequence is that an octopus can obtain visual information that is unavailable to a person looking only for differences in brightness or ordinary color.

Arms and suckers provide touch and contact chemistry

An octopus does not have to bring an object to its mouth to gather chemical information. Suckers contain distinct populations of sensory cells that respond to mechanical and chemical cues. When an arm contacts a surface, it can sample that surface and detect prey-associated chemicals. Scientists describe this as contact-dependent chemosensation; “taste by touch” is a useful shorthand only when it is defined this way, rather than as literal human-style tasting (Molecular basis of chemotactile sensation in octopus, 2020).

This combination makes an arm both a manipulator and a sensing surface. A sucker can report texture, resistance and chemical information while the arm explores a crevice or handles a shell. The animal can then change grip, direction or persistence based on signals arriving during contact. Because the information is gathered at the point of interaction, tactile and chemical sensing are especially relevant to tasks in which vision is blocked or an object must be physically opened.

Arms can respond to light without forming images

A 2025 electrophysiology study found that illuminating an octopus arm evoked activity in its axial nerve cord. In the tested preparations, blue light produced the strongest responses, while red and green light also produced responses. The authors reported that the effect was mediated through the arm’s skin and suckers (Neural responses to light stimulation in the octopus arm, 2025).

This is evidence for photoreception in the arm, not evidence that an arm replaces the eye or constructs a picture of its surroundings. It suggests that an arm can register illumination locally while it explores. How that signal contributes to natural behavior, and how it is integrated with information from the eyes and suckers, still requires testing.

What happened in the five-level puzzle experiment?

Richter and colleagues designed a food-retrieval task to test whether octopuses could adjust when a familiar problem was altered. The subjects were seven wild-caught O. vulgaris, so the result should not automatically be generalized to every octopus species.

Stage or comparison What changed What the experiment showed
Initial training An L-shaped container held food and had to be opened All seven animals learned the food-retrieval procedure to the study’s criterion
Changed orientation The puzzle was presented in a different orientation Animals adapted their behavior rather than simply repeating one fixed approach
Restricted access An opaque barrier altered the available route or view Performance changed under the new access condition, while animals continued to reach criterion
Randomized orientation The orientation varied between trials All animals again reached criterion, with individual differences in performance and strategy

The researchers discussed several possible explanations, including trial-and-error learning, generalized strategies and mental representations. The data establish successful adaptation in this puzzle, not which explanation is correct. The study is valuable precisely because it used repeated, controlled changes rather than relying on a single clever anecdote.

The paper also mentioned an estimate of roughly 140 million neurons as contextual background drawn from earlier literature. That figure was not independently verified in the study’s evidence base and should not be treated as a settled neuron count for all octopuses or all species.

How do octopuses learn from visual and tactile experience?

Learning is not limited to one sense. A pilot study of plain-body octopuses tested whether earlier experience with a physical object or a picture affected later learning about a video representation of that item. The animals’ prior visual or tactile experience influenced subsequent learning about the video stimulus (Kawashima, Yasumuro and Ikeda, 2021).

Because this was a pilot study, it is best read as evidence that information from different sensory channels can affect later discrimination or learning, not as proof that octopuses hold a human-like concept of an object across media. It does, however, fit the broader picture: an octopus can use what it has seen and what it has physically handled when responding to a later cue.

When evaluating a learning result, ask what the animal actually had to do. A discrimination task may require choosing between two stimuli. Conditioning may link a cue with food or another outcome. A puzzle may require manipulating an unfamiliar arrangement. Success in one category does not automatically demonstrate abilities in the others.

Do octopuses have good memory?

Different brain systems contribute to different learning tasks

Classic lesion and training work indicates that tactile and visual discrimination involve partly different brain systems. In a 1961 study, M. J. Wells reported that the vertical lobe contributes to learning through either system and wrote that it “plays a part in learning by either system, and is to some extent a store for both tactile and visual memories” (Wells, 1961).

The finding is important but should not be turned into a one-to-one comparison with a human memory structure. The vertical lobe is part of an octopus brain organized differently from a mammalian brain, and the experiments tested particular forms of discrimination. They show that learning and memory depend on identifiable neural systems, not that one region has exactly the same role as a human hippocampus or cortex.

Memory research covers several kinds of information

A 2023 primer reviews cephalopod learning and memory in relation to navigation, timing and food selection. Its scope includes octopuses, cuttlefish and squid, so a result from another cephalopod must not be silently presented as an octopus result (Cephalopod learning and memory, 2023).

No single, general memory-duration number is established by the sources used here. An octopus may retain information relevant to a trained task, but that does not justify saying that octopuses have a fixed memory span of a particular number of days or years. Memory depends on what was learned, how it was tested, the species and the interval chosen by the experimenter.

Are octopuses intelligent?

“Intelligent” is a broad label. Controlled studies support strong claims about sensory discrimination, associative learning and flexible behavior in particular settings. They support more cautious claims about planning, reasoning and abstract mental representation.

A 2019 review of cephalopod cognition surveys learning, memory, problem solving and other abilities across cephalopods, while a 2020 comparative-cognition review warns that many newer claims about complex cognition are based largely on anecdotal observations (Cephalopod cognition, 2019; How intelligent is a cephalopod? Lessons from comparative cognition, 2020). An anecdote can generate a useful hypothesis, but it does not control for prior training, chance, cueing by people or alternative explanations.

A more precise description is that octopuses are capable learners with flexible behavior and unusual sensory access. Whether a particular performance reflects causal reasoning, a learned rule, perceptual cue use or repeated trial-and-error must be determined task by task.

How should you compare octopus cognition experiments?

Use the same five questions for every study. They prevent a result from one species or task from becoming an unsupported claim about all octopuses.

  1. Which sensory modality was tested? Was the cue visual, tactile, contact-chemical, polarization-based or a combination?
  2. What was the task? Identify whether it measured discrimination, conditioning, memory, navigation, object manipulation or a novel problem.
  3. Which species and how many animals participated? Record the species and sample size; seven common octopuses in a puzzle are not a sample of every octopus.
  4. Was the evidence controlled? Repeated trials with defined criteria provide stronger evidence than an uncontrolled observation or a famous story.
  5. Did the animal transfer what it learned? Transfer to a new stimulus or arrangement is more informative about flexibility than success only in the exact training setup.
Finding Species and sample information Modality and task Transfer or limitation
Polarization discrimination Octopuses; sample details are in the primary 1996 report Visual polarization-contrast discrimination Transfer to new situations; does not make polarization identical to human color vision
Chemotactile sensing Octopus research on sucker sensory cells; species details in the 2020 paper Mechanical and contact-dependent chemical cues Shows how arms sample surfaces; it is a sensory mechanism, not by itself a reasoning test
Arm photoreception Octopus arm electrophysiology, 2025 Light-evoked neural responses in skin, suckers and axial nerve cord Demonstrates local light responses; does not demonstrate image formation by the arm
Object and video learning Plain-body octopus; pilot study Visual and tactile experience followed by learning about a video representation Prior experience affected later learning; small pilot evidence should not be generalized broadly
L-shaped food puzzle Seven wild-caught O. vulgaris Food retrieval with changed orientation, barrier and randomized orientation All reached criterion at each stage; mechanism of flexibility remains unresolved

What remains unknown about octopus problem solving?

Mental representations versus trial-and-error

When an octopus succeeds after a puzzle is rearranged, observers cannot see directly whether it imagined the object’s hidden geometry. To separate mental representation from trial-and-error, future experiments would need novel arrangements, controls for repeated motor routines and tests that prevent the animal from relying on a familiar local cue.

How long memories last

Learning a task and retaining it over a particular interval are different measurements. The available sources do not establish one general duration for octopus memory, so claims about a universal short-term or long-term span should be treated as unsupported unless tied to a named experiment, species and interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How findings vary among species

Common octopuses, plain-body octopuses and other cephalopods are not interchangeable labels. A result from cuttlefish or squid may illuminate cephalopod evolution, but it is not automatically evidence about octopus behavior. Species, age, rearing history, motivation and task design can all affect performance.

How distributed sensing is integrated

The arms receive mechanical, chemical and possibly light-related information while the eyes provide distant visual cues. Researchers still need to determine how these streams are combined in natural foraging, exploration and escape. Arm photoreception, for example, may help an arm register local illumination, but its behavioral significance has not been established.

What is the most accurate conclusion?

Octopuses solve tested problems through a powerful combination of vision, polarization sensitivity, tactile exploration, contact chemosensation, learning and flexible action. Experiments show that they can discriminate stimuli, use information acquired through more than one sense, remember aspects of trained tasks and adapt when a food puzzle changes. Those are substantial cognitive abilities.

The evidence does not justify treating every clever behavior as human-like reasoning. The strongest scientific description stays close to the experiment: name the species, state the sample size, identify the sensory cue and task, and say whether the animal transferred learning to a new situation. On that evidence, octopuses are demonstrably flexible and capable learners, while the nature and limits of their underlying representations remain active questions.
