NYT Connections does not use a conventional points-per-answer score in ordinary play. Its official performance measures focus on wins, mistakes, perfect puzzles, and streaks. You can submit three incorrect groups and still finish within the game’s win-rate definition; a fourth mistake exhausts the allowance and ends the game. Connections Bot ratings are a separate feature, not the ordinary puzzle score.
How to play NYT Connections
Each puzzle presents 16 words. Your task is to sort them into four groups of four, with a shared connection linking the words in each group. A connection might be a straightforward semantic category such as “FISH,” or a wordplay pattern such as “Things that start with FIRE,” both examples given in the NYT Help Center’s Connections rules.

The four categories are color-coded yellow, green, blue, and purple. NYT describes yellow as the easiest and purple as the trickiest; the colors show relative difficulty, not a numerical score or a guaranteed measure of how hard a particular group will feel to you. The puzzle has one intended solution, but its words are deliberately chosen so that some can plausibly fit more than one category. That overlap creates tempting alternatives and is a central part of the challenge.
When you submit a correct group, its words leave the board and the category appears with its color. An incorrect submission counts as a mistake. A how-to guide from Tom’s Guide describes the four-mistake game-ending limit; the official help page is the better source for NYT’s definitions of wins and recorded statistics.

How NYT Connections scoring works
For ordinary play, think of “scoring” as a set of outcome and progress statistics rather than a total of points. NYT’s official statistics track puzzles played and completed, wins, streaks, perfect solves, and how many mistakes you made. The Help Center defines a win as completing a puzzle in fewer than four mistakes, and a perfect puzzle as one solved with zero mistakes.

These definitions come from the NYT Help Center. They answer a common source of confusion: “four mistakes” is the failure threshold, while “under four mistakes” is the win-rate rule. Three wrong submissions do not automatically make the puzzle a loss if you solve it afterward; the fourth uses up the allowance.
How many mistakes can you make in Connections?
You can make up to three incorrect submissions and still complete the puzzle as a win under NYT’s stated definition. A fourth incorrect submission reaches the game-ending limit. A wrong submission is therefore consequential even when it does not end the puzzle: it consumes part of the remaining allowance and may turn what could have been a perfect solve into a less clean result.

Do not confuse “Puzzles Completed” with “Puzzles Won.” The completed count includes failed games, whereas the win-rate numerator includes only puzzles completed with fewer than four mistakes. The histogram adds another perspective by showing the mistake count for puzzles, rather than collapsing every successful solve into the same result. Together, these measures distinguish whether you finished, whether you won, and how many errors you needed.
Some guides describe a near-miss notification for an incorrect guess. Tom’s Guide’s how-to mentions feedback about how close a guess was, but the official help material cited here does not establish the current wording or behavior of that message. Treat any such cue as interface feedback, not as a separate scoring rule; the documented consequence of an incorrect submission is that it counts as a mistake.
What counts as a score—and what does not
The official help material does not give ordinary play a formula such as points for each solved category or points deducted for each error. A number presented by a third-party solver, fan-made leaderboard, or personal spreadsheet may be useful for that tool’s own comparison, but it should not be mistaken for NYT’s official ordinary-play score.

Connections Bot is different. For eligible subscribers, it reports a skill score and a solution-uniqueness rating, along with category difficulty and order, common mistakes, and feedback on guesses. NYT says this feature is available to All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. These Bot outputs describe additional analysis of a solve; they are not the same thing as the win rate, mistake histogram, or streak shown in ordinary statistics. The official Connections help page explains the feature and its access limits.

Those are different facts about performance, not interchangeable versions of one universal score.
Why a plausible wrong group can cost you
The board is designed to make some words appear to belong together in more than one way. A set of four may share an obvious theme yet still not be one of the puzzle’s intended categories. Since the official rules describe one solution and acknowledge these plausible overlaps, an attractive pattern is not enough: it must also fit the remaining words and leave a workable way to form the other groups.

A useful approach is to treat a proposed category as a hypothesis rather than a sure answer. Before submitting, check whether each of the four words fits the same connection, whether any word has a stronger competing role, and whether the 12 words left behind can still plausibly form three groups. This does not guarantee a solve, but it helps avoid spending a mistake on a group that merely looks coherent in isolation.
The colors can help you decide what to tackle first, but they should not replace that check. NYT presents yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest, yet a category’s difficulty for you depends on the words and the alternate connections you notice. If you have identified a convincing group, solving it removes those words and can make the remaining relationships easier to see. If several candidates overlap, compare them against the full board before committing.
The design has also been studied as a reasoning task. A 2024 paper by Angel Yahir Loredo Lopez, Tyler McDonald, and Ali Emami describes a dataset of 358 puzzles collected from the game’s debut on June 12, 2023, through June 3, 2024. That figure is the paper’s benchmark dataset, not an official NYT total or a statistic about how well players perform. The authors frame the task as one that can lure quick, misleading associations; for current rules and features, NYT’s Help Center remains the authority. The paper is available at arXiv.

The daily Connections puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. NYT’s Help Center says a puzzle must be solved before local midnight to count toward the current streak. Completing it after midnight breaks that streak and starts a new one, so the date boundary is local rather than a single worldwide reset time.
This timing matters specifically to the streak statistic. A player may still finish a puzzle, but finishing after the local boundary does not preserve the previous run. The current streak measures consecutive daily wins under that schedule; it is not simply a count of how many puzzles have been solved in total.
Access, accounts, and archived puzzles
NYT says Connections is free to play on its platforms and does not require an account. Signing in lets progress carry across devices. The official help page lists the NYT Games web and app experiences and other NYT platforms where the game is available.

A quick way to read your results
- Want to know whether you won? Check whether you completed the puzzle before reaching four mistakes; NYT’s win-rate definition is fewer than four.
- Want to know how cleanly you solved it? Look at the mistake count or histogram. Zero mistakes is a perfect puzzle.
- Want to know whether you kept a daily run alive? Check the current streak and remember that the puzzle’s local-midnight deadline governs the streak boundary.
- Want deeper analysis of a solve? Connections Bot provides separate ratings and feedback for subscribers who have access.
For ordinary play, the most accurate short answer is that NYT Connections tracks outcomes and mistakes, not a universal points total. A successful solve, a perfect solve, a streak, and a Bot rating each describe a different part of the result.
