Nobel Prize candidates are nominated by people qualified under the rules for each prize; they cannot nominate themselves. Nobel Committees check nominations, assess candidates and may seek expert advice before reporting to the prize-awarding institution, which makes the final choice. Nominee names and the evaluation record are kept confidential for 50 years, so there is no official public list of current nominees.
How the Nobel nomination and selection process works
The process has a common outline across the prizes, but it is not one identical procedure with one universal list of nominators. The relevant Nobel Committee organizes the assessment for its category. It verifies nominations, considers the candidates and may consult outside experts. The committee then submits its report or recommendation to the institution responsible for awarding that prize. That institution—not the nominators, committee advisers or public—makes the final decision.

The Nobel Prize Outreach overview describes the overall process as nomination followed by selection and award. The Nobel Foundation statutes provide the governing framework, while category committees describe details of their own work. Those sources should be read together: the shared stages are useful for understanding the system, but category rules and committee procedures can differ.

A nominator puts forward a candidate if they meet the rules for that prize. A committee evaluates the candidates and develops a report or recommendation. The prize-awarding institution makes the award decision. A nomination is therefore an entry into consideration, not a vote, endorsement or guarantee that a candidate will receive the same level of consideration as someone else.

When nominations, assessments and decisions happen
The annual process generally begins in September, when committees send invitations to eligible nominators. For the process described in Nobel Prize Outreach’s Nobel Week 2025 media information, the submission deadline was 31 January. The statutes phrase the annual adjudication period as embracing nominations submitted during the preceding twelve months up to 1 February. These are close formulations, but not identical: 31 January is the operational deadline stated for that cycle, while 1 February is the wording in the statutes.
- September: Committees invite eligible nominators to submit candidates for the relevant prize.
- By 31 January for the 2025 cycle: Nominators submit their proposals. A deadline from one year’s official material should not be assumed to apply unchanged in another year.
- February through early October: Committees validate submissions, consider the candidates, narrow the field and, for selected candidates, may seek assessments from domestic and international experts. They prepare reports for the awarding institution.
- Decision and announcement: The prize-awarding institution chooses the laureate or laureates. The decision is announced publicly, usually in early October.
The 2023 annual review notes that committee procedures may vary somewhat. The outline therefore describes the sequence, not a fixed number of assessment rounds or a single timetable for every category. The statutes also state that no appeal may be made against the prize-awarding body’s decision.
The deadline wording matters because an annual process has both a recurring statutory framework and date-specific operational information. The Nobel Week 2025 media information gives 31 January for that cycle; the statutes use the phrase “up to 1 February” when describing the period covered by annual adjudication. Those phrases are close, but an article or candidate should not silently treat them as identical dates. Anyone following a particular year’s process should use the relevant official deadline for that year and prize rather than carry forward a date from an earlier cycle.
After the deadline, the committee’s work continues for months. The broad stages include checking that submissions satisfy the applicable rules, compiling the nominations, reducing the field for closer assessment, seeking expert input on selected candidates where appropriate, and preparing its report. The sources do not prescribe one universal number of candidates at each stage or one identical timetable across categories. The announcement is the public endpoint of a largely confidential process, not the moment when nominations first begin.
Who is allowed to nominate someone?
Only people who meet the rules for the particular prize may nominate. Nobel Prize Outreach describes eligible nominators as including, depending on the prize, academics, members of academies, previous laureates, parliamentarians and others. Some are invited by the relevant committee. The exact qualifications are category-specific, so this broad description is not an exhaustive checklist for any one prize.
The Peace Prize has a broader group of eligible nominators who can submit nominations without an invitation than the other prizes. That distinction is one reason not to assume a single nomination rule applies to every category. A person considering a nomination should check the official rules for the specific prize and year rather than rely on a general list.
In practical terms, there are two questions to check for a given category: whether someone belongs to a class of people allowed to nominate, and whether the process requires that person to receive an invitation. The answers are not interchangeable. Nobel Prize Outreach’s overview gives examples of broad nominator groups, but the governing rules for the individual prize determine who qualifies. The Peace Prize is a notable contrast because a broader group may nominate without an invitation; that does not make its requirements a template for other categories.

This variation also affects comparisons between prizes. The relevant institution, eligible nominator groups, invitation requirements, committee and expert procedures, and annual deadline are all category-level considerations. The shared sequence—nomination, committee assessment and decision by an awarding institution—does not erase those differences. A general description can explain how the system works, but it should not be used as a substitute for the rules applying to a particular prize.
Can you nominate yourself?
No. Self-nominations are not accepted. A candidate must be proposed by a qualified nominator under the applicable prize rules.
Does being nominated more than once help?
A nomination is for the current year’s prize. A candidate may be nominated in multiple years, and more than one qualified person may nominate that candidate in the same year. But nomination totals are not a published prediction formula: official process material describes evaluation stages without saying that a higher number of nominations makes a candidate more likely to win. A nomination establishes that someone eligible submitted the candidate; it does not establish the committee’s view or predict the final decision.
For that reason, a reported nomination count should not be read as a ranking. The official process material does not offer a formula connecting the number of nominations to the chance of being selected. Nor does a nomination in one year carry an announced advantage into the next: the nomination is for that year’s prize, and a later nomination is a new submission in a later cycle. Without an official record—which remains confidential for 50 years—outsiders cannot use totals to reconstruct how candidates were assessed.
What Nobel Committees do with nominations
Committees are responsible for evaluating candidates in their prize categories. Their work begins with checking whether nominations meet the applicable requirements and compiling the submissions. They then assess the field and narrow it for further consideration. For candidates at later stages, committees may request expert assessments, including from domestic and foreign specialists. The committee uses this evaluation work to prepare reports or recommendations for the prize-awarding institution.
Expert advice informs the committee’s assessment; it does not replace the awarding institution’s role. The institution responsible for the prize makes the final selection. Nor does the process imply that every candidate receives the same form of review: the 2023 annual review says committee procedures may vary, and official committee pages for Physics and Literature describe expert assistance in their respective processes.
These stages explain why the process cannot be reduced to a public popularity contest. The committee first checks validity, then considers the field and decides which candidates warrant closer evaluation. Expert advisers can contribute specialist assessments, but the committee remains responsible for its report or recommendation. The committee’s work is an evaluation process, while the final award authority remains with the prize-awarding institution. The sources describe this sequence without setting out a public scoring system, fixed weighting of nominations, or a formula that lets outsiders reproduce the final choice.

Category-specific detail should be handled carefully. For example, official Physics and Literature committee pages describe expert assistance, while the 2023 annual review cautions that procedures can vary somewhat. It is accurate to say that expert advice may be used; it would go beyond the general account to claim that every committee uses identical experts, identical rounds, or identical assessment criteria. The same caution applies to timing: the February-to-October outline captures the annual span, but does not guarantee that every committee follows precisely the same internal calendar.

Which institution makes the final choice?
The final decision belongs to the prize-awarding institution for the relevant category. Nominators put forward candidates, and committees assess them, but neither step is the award decision. The institution’s decision is final under the statutes, which state: “No appeals may be made against the decision of a prize-awarding body with regard to the award of a prize.”
This division of responsibility is important when interpreting announcements. A nominator can submit a name but cannot award the prize. A committee can assess and recommend candidates but does not replace the body that awards the prize. And public opinion, media coverage or a candidate’s visibility is not described as a formal decision-making stage in the official process. Once the awarding institution has made its decision, the statutes do not provide an appeal.
Economic Sciences has a distinct origin
The Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is often presented alongside the Nobel Prizes, but it was not one of the original prizes established by Alfred Nobel’s will. Sveriges Riksbank instituted it in 1968. Under its special statutes, it is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and follows Nobel Prize rules where relevant. It is presented at the same ceremony as the Nobel Prizes, but its institutional origin and statutory basis are distinct.
That distinction is worth keeping in view when describing who awards which prize. Economic Sciences shares the public ceremony and follows relevant Nobel Prize rules, but its founding basis is the Riksbank’s 1968 institution of the prize and its special statutes. It should not be described as one of the original prizes created by Alfred Nobel’s will. This is an example of why a shared public presentation does not mean every prize has precisely the same institutional history.

No. The Nobel Prize Outreach overview says nominee names cannot be revealed until 50 years later. The Nobel Foundation statutes also restrict disclosure of proposals, investigations and opinions, and say that material used in evaluation and decision-making may not be made available until at least 50 years after the decision.
That confidentiality applies to the official nomination and evaluation record. A public statement by someone claiming to have nominated a person—or speculation in the press—does not amount to an official confirmation that the person is on a current year’s nominee list. The public cannot use nomination counts or a supposed current list to verify who is under consideration.

The 50-year rule is broader than simply keeping a list of names out of public view. The statutes cover proposals, investigations and opinions, as well as material used in evaluation and decision-making. The public therefore cannot consult current committee files to see which candidates were nominated, how a field was narrowed, or what assessments informed a recommendation. The Nobel Prize Outreach overview’s statement about nominee names and the statutes’ treatment of evaluation materials describe related protections at different levels.
Confidentiality also sets a limit on what can be confirmed when a person, organization or news report claims that someone has been nominated. A claim by an alleged nominator is not an official public list and cannot establish the candidate’s status in the official process. Similarly, a purported count cannot show whether the committee considered a candidate a finalist or what conclusion it reached. The distinction is not merely that the names are difficult to find; official confirmation is not available during the 50-year period.
What a nomination does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you that a qualified nominator submitted a candidate under the rules for that prize and year, if the nomination is officially confirmed after the confidentiality period.
- It does not tell you that a committee has endorsed the candidate, that the candidate reached a later assessment stage, or that the candidate will win.
- It does not provide a reliable public ranking: official process material does not establish nomination totals as a measure of likelihood.
- It cannot be checked against a public current-year nominee list, because names and evaluation materials remain confidential for 50 years.
For readers following a particular prize, the most reliable public information is the awarding institution’s announcement of the laureate, not claims about undisclosed nominations. Annual deadlines and nominator eligibility should be checked against the official material for that category and cycle.
