In the 2026 NWSL season, eight of 16 teams qualify for the playoffs. A team clinches when no possible combination of remaining regular-season results can push it below eighth place under the league’s tiebreakers. Each club plays 30 regular-season games; wins earn three points, draws one and losses none.
How do NWSL teams qualify for the playoffs?
The league uses a single table. At the end of the 2026 regular season, the top eight teams qualify for the eight-team, single-elimination bracket. All eight enter in the opening round. The qualification cutoff is eighth place; a team’s final position also determines its seed.

Each of the 16 clubs is scheduled to play 30 regular-season games, split evenly between 15 home and 15 away. The standings award three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss.

A clinch is a mathematical status: no possible results in the remaining games can leave the team outside the top eight once the official tiebreak procedure is applied. A team is eliminated when no possible remaining results can lift it into the top eight. These are conclusions from the published standings rules, not separate standings labels defined in the competition rules.

Start with maximum possible points
For each team in the playoff race, add three points for every remaining game to its current total. This gives its maximum possible finish. If a team’s maximum is lower than the current points totals of eight other teams, it cannot qualify. Likewise, a team can clinch on points when the remaining contenders cannot catch it closely enough to threaten its position in the top eight.
Check ties at the cutoff
Points alone do not resolve every scenario. If a team could finish level with a rival near eighth, apply the league’s tiebreakers in order. A points tie may still determine whether a club qualifies, so a maximum-points calculation is only conclusive when the points totals settle the cutoff.

For a live scenario, use the current standings and remaining fixtures to compare the teams around eighth. Track points, games left, goal difference and any remaining head-to-head games; then continue down the tiebreak list if teams can finish level. A team cannot be called clinched or eliminated solely because it currently sits inside or outside the top eight.

- Most goals scored
- Head-to-head points
- Head-to-head goals scored
- Fewest disciplinary points
- A coin flip for a tie between two teams, or drawing lots for a tie involving three or more teams
Apply each step in sequence: the next tiebreaker matters only if the preceding one does not separate the teams. Goal difference is therefore the first tiebreaker, but it is not the only one.
What does qualification change?
Qualifying secures a place in the knockout bracket, not a particular opponent or seed. The final regular-season standings determine the pairings:

In the semifinals, the winner of the 1–8 quarterfinal meets the winner of 4–5; the winner of 2–7 meets the winner of 3–6. Higher seeds host quarterfinals and semifinals unless venue availability prevents it, in which case the lower seed may host. As a result, teams that have already clinched can still improve their seed and potential hosting position by finishing higher.

Playoff matches level after 90 minutes go to two 15-minute periods of extra time. If still tied, the teams decide the match in a penalty shoot-out.

When is the playoff race decided?
The NWSL’s July 2, 2025 schedule-footprint announcement designated the final weekend of the 2026 regular season as Decision Day and set a playoff window afterward. Because match dates can change, check the current official schedule for dates rather than relying on a season-window announcement.
How to check whether a team has clinched today
- Open the official NWSL standings and note points, games played and tiebreak information for teams around eighth.
- Use the official schedule to list each contender’s remaining matches.
- Calculate each contender’s maximum possible points by adding three points per remaining game.
- Test whether any remaining results could create a tie at the cutoff; if so, apply the full tiebreak order.
- Call a place clinched only when no such scenario can put the team below eighth; call a team eliminated only when no scenario can put it in the top eight.
The current standings table is needed for club-by-club status. Without checking its latest rows and the remaining fixtures, no particular team can reliably be described as clinched, eliminated or still in contention.
