NVIDIA made its GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition compact by pairing a three-piece circuit board with a dual-slot, double-flow-through cooler. The split-board layout keeps the central PCB smaller, while the cooler routes air through its fins from both fans. Those details describe NVIDIA’s Founders Edition—not every RTX 5090, whose dimensions and cooling designs vary by manufacturer.
How the three-piece PCB helps make the card smaller
Instead of putting every connection on one large circuit board, the Founders Edition uses a three-piece PCB. NVIDIA describes the design as a way to support its cooling and thermal goals. PCWorld’s report on an interview with NVIDIA says the board was shrunk by moving the PCIe connector and display outputs onto separate secondary boards, leaving a more compact central board for the GPU.

That division also creates room around the cooling assembly for air to move through the card. The reported layout explains how the board and cooler can be packaged together; it does not establish every electrical or manufacturing detail of the design. NVIDIA summarized the approach in its launch announcement, describing a “unique 3-piece PCB” alongside new cooling design and liquid-metal thermal interface material.
How the double-flow-through cooler moves air
The Founders Edition uses a dual-slot, double-flow-through cooler. NVIDIA says advanced PCB and thermal design allow it to deliver “double the airflow of a traditional graphics-card configuration.” That is NVIDIA’s design claim, not an independently measured comparison in the sources cited here.

Tom’s Hardware explains the airflow arrangement this way: both fans can blow air through radiator fins. The cooler also includes a 3D vapor chamber, integrated heat pipes and active fins, according to NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page. Together, those are the named parts of the cooling system; by themselves, they do not establish particular temperatures, noise levels or long-term reliability.
PCWorld’s interview report adds two enclosure details: NVIDIA tuned the fans to balance airflow and noise, and the exterior grille has a slightly concave shape intended to even out pressure differences inside and outside the housing. These are reported design explanations, not a substitute for comparative acoustic or thermal test results.
Will the RTX 5090 Founders Edition fit in your PC?
Check the specific card’s measurements against your case before buying. NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 Quick Start Guide specifies 304 × 137 × 61 mm of required card clearance and recommends leaving one additional slot of space in front of the fans for airflow. The extra space matters even if the card itself clears the case’s length and thickness limits.

The same guide calls for a minimum-rated 1000 W system power supply and lists supported 16-pin and adapter cable configurations. Confirm the exact connector and cable arrangement for the card you plan to install, as well as whether your power supply meets the requirement.

The compact dimensions and cooling layout discussed here are specific to NVIDIA’s Founders Edition/reference hardware. NVIDIA’s published specifications say add-in-card specifications can vary by manufacturer, so an RTX 5090 from a board partner may have a different size, slot thickness, cooler or power-cable arrangement. Check that exact model’s specifications for both case clearance and PSU compatibility.
NVIDIA lists 32 GB of GDDR7 memory for the RTX 5090 on its product page. That is a product specification, not evidence that a particular cooling configuration delivers a specific temperature or noise level. The design features explain how NVIDIA packaged the Founders Edition; they should not be read as a controlled performance comparison with other RTX 5090 cards.
