DNA-rich neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can also form a physical framework that gathers platelets, red blood cells and fibrin. These are mechanistic findings—not evidence that nucleic acids are a safe or available treatment for bleeding.
How can nucleic acids help blood clot?
Coagulation is a chain of reactions that generates thrombin, an enzyme that helps turn fibrinogen into fibrin. In laboratory experiments, extracellular DNA or RNA can interact with contact-pathway proteins, including factors XII and XI, and encourage their activation. This pathway is also called the intrinsic pathway.

In a human-plasma study, adding DNA or RNA increased thrombin generation through the intrinsic pathway and shortened clotting time. Histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG), a plasma protein that binds nucleic acids, reduced their effects at multiple points in the experimental system. These results describe plasma experiments; they do not establish the size or clinical effect of nucleic-acid activity in a living person. Vu et al., 2016

Neutrophils are immune cells that can release web-like structures called NETs, made of extracellular DNA, histones and antimicrobial proteins. The authors of the study “Extracellular DNA traps promote thrombosis” described NETs as part of the innate immune response to infections.

In that experimental study, NETs promoted platelet adhesion, activation and aggregation, as well as recruitment of red blood cells and deposition of fibrin. DNase, which breaks down DNA, or heparin dismantled the scaffold in the model. This is evidence about a multi-component immune structure in an experimental setting; it does not show that DNA by itself always causes clots, or that dismantling NETs is an appropriate treatment for an individual. Why can experiments reach different results?
“Nucleic acids promote clotting” is not a universal rule. Findings can vary with whether the material is DNA or RNA, its structure and chain length, how it was prepared, its concentration, and the assay used. The comparison also changes when researchers study free nucleic acids rather than DNA embedded in NETs, or plasma rather than an animal model.

Preparation can introduce substances that affect clotting independently of the nucleic acid being studied. A comparative study reported that silica shed by some silica-based extraction columns can promote clotting, and that polyphosphate can co-purify with cellular DNA or RNA. Under that study’s experimental conditions, long-chain polyphosphate was much more potent than the tested cell-derived nucleic acids. Smith, Gajsiewicz and Morrissey, 2018
Accordingly, results are most informative when researchers report the material’s source and structure, purification method, concentration, contamination controls and assay conditions. A review of circulating nucleic acids in hemostasis noted substantial variation in measurement methods and a lack of standardized procedures, which limits comparisons across studies and interpretation as clinical biomarkers. Fuchs et al., 2014

What do the animal and quantitative findings establish?
Kannemeier and colleagues reported extracellular RNA-associated coagulation activity in vitro and in animal models. In a mouse arterial-thrombosis model, pretreatment with RNase, an enzyme that degrades RNA, delayed occlusive thrombosis. The same paper reported a 15- to 20-fold elevation of serine-protease activity in nucleic-acid-supplemented plasma experiments. That figure belongs to the paper’s specific assay; it is not a general estimate of how nucleic acids affect clotting in people. Kannemeier et al., 2007
Plasma assays, animal models and human treatment studies answer different questions. A result in a mouse thrombosis model can support a proposed mechanism, but it does not demonstrate that an intervention prevents or treats clotting safely in people. Likewise, a change in a laboratory clotting measure is not proof of a useful clinical effect.

Does this mean nucleic acids are a treatment to stop bleeding?
No established consumer or clinical nucleic-acid treatment for stopping bleeding is demonstrated by these findings. The evidence described here is mechanistic and largely preclinical, and it concerns conditions in which clotting or thrombosis may occur—not a proven way to manage an injury.
A 2024 paper describes a NET-inspired DNA hydrogel as a research concept for a wound-hemostasis adjuvant. That report does not establish that the material is marketed, clinically approved or available for consumers. 2024 NET-inspired DNA hydrogel paper
