A nuclear power plant uses controlled fission to produce heat, then uses steam to turn a turbine connected to an electrical generator. Transformers and transmission lines carry that generator output into the wider grid, where it joins electricity from other sources. The reactor supplies heat; it does not make electricity directly.
How fission becomes electricity
- Fission releases heat. Nuclear reactions in fuel inside the reactor core heat the surrounding coolant.
- Heat produces steam. Depending on the reactor design, water heated by the core either boils in the reactor vessel or transfers heat to a separate water circuit.
- Steam turns a turbine. Expanding steam flows across turbine blades, making the turbine shaft rotate.
- The turbine drives a generator. The rotating shaft turns the generator rotor. Its electromagnetic operation converts mechanical rotation into electrical output.
- Steam is condensed and reused. After leaving the turbine, steam is cooled back into water and pumped into the heating cycle again.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) summarizes the chain this way: “the nuclear reaction heats the fuel, the fuel heats the water to make steam, the steam spins the turbine, the turbine turns the generator, and the generator makes electricity.” NRC: How Does a Nuclear Power Plant Make Electricity?

How boiling-water and pressurized-water reactors differ
The two designs used in U.S. nuclear power plants are boiling-water reactors (BWRs) and pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). Their main difference is where water boils and whether reactor coolant itself becomes the steam sent toward the turbine. Other reactor types are used around the world.

|---|---|---|
| Where water boils | In the reactor vessel, as water absorbs heat from the core. | In a separate secondary circuit, after heat passes from the primary reactor coolant through a steam generator. |
| Water sent toward the turbine | Separated steam from the reactor vessel. | Steam from the secondary circuit; the pressurized primary coolant remains liquid. |
| Downstream equipment | Turbine, generator, condenser, and returned water. | Turbine, generator, condenser, and returned water. |
In a BWR, steam formed in the reactor vessel travels through steam lines to the turbine. In a PWR, a steam generator transfers heat from the primary coolant to secondary water, and that secondary water boils to supply the turbine. The arrangements share the turbine-generator and steam-condensing stages, but the water circuits are not the same. See the NRC explanation of boiling-water reactors, its explanation of pressurized-water reactors, and the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s overview of nuclear power plants.

How electricity leaves the plant and reaches the grid
- Generator output reaches the switchyard. The generator produces electricity at its terminals. Its output voltage is distinct from the much higher voltage used on transmission lines.
- A step-up transformer raises voltage. At the station switchyard, transformers increase voltage for transmission. For a given power transfer, higher voltage means lower current, which reduces resistive heating losses in conductors.
- Transmission lines carry power over distance. High-voltage lines connect the plant to the wider network. At substations, transformers reduce voltage for distribution; local transformers reduce it further for customer service.
- The electricity joins a shared system. Power from many generators flows through an interconnected network. Consumers draw from that system; it generally is not meaningful to identify a home’s electricity as coming from one particular plant.
- Grid operators balance supply and demand. Generation and consumption must stay balanced as conditions change. In the United States, balancing authorities coordinate this work within their areas and coordinate transfers. The Lower 48 physical grid is grouped into three principal interconnections that mostly operate independently; governance and grid structure differ elsewhere.
An International Atomic Energy Agency report published in 2009 gives broad illustrative ranges of 2–50 kV for power-plant generation voltage and 100–800 kV for transmission voltage. These are general figures from that report, not specifications for a particular plant or a guarantee of present-day values. The EIA’s explanation of electricity delivery describes how transmission and distribution lines carry electricity to consumers.
Why the generator must synchronize with the grid
In an AC interconnection, generators must operate in step with the grid’s frequency and phase within permitted limits. This synchronization allows the generator to deliver power without falling out of step with the network. Protective breakers disconnect a generator if it loses synchronism. The applicable equipment, settings, and grid-code requirements vary by plant and location; the IAEA report on nuclear power plant grid interfaces explains the general connection principles.

Why a nuclear plant also needs electricity
A station does not only export electricity; it also uses electricity to operate. In the NRC’s descriptions of typical BWR and PWR arrangements, grid power normally supplies pumps that circulate reactor coolant and other plant systems. If offsite power is lost, other pumps can supply emergency cooling water, and these may be powered by onsite diesel generators. Other safety systems also require electricity. The exact backup-power layers and equipment are plant-specific; the NRC pages describe typical designs, not every plant’s complete configuration.

The EIA reported that steam turbines supplied 42.5% of U.S. utility-scale net electricity generation in 2022, and nuclear steam turbines supplied 18.2%. These figures describe U.S. utility-scale generation across the year, not the output or efficiency of an individual nuclear plant. The EIA page was updated October 31, 2023, and says the figures use final 2022 data from its Form EIA-923 Power Plant Operations Report.
