North Korean missile launches are detected through a layered warning process: infrared sensors on satellites can identify launch-related heat, ground systems process and distribute warning information, and radar observations can help refine the missile’s path. A launch detection is an initial indication, not necessarily a complete or precise track. Public sources describe parts of this process, but not the full operational picture for any particular test.
How does the detection and tracking process work?
Detection and tracking are separate stages. Detection identifies a launch-related event; tracking uses observations over time to estimate where the missile is going. The broad sequence below is supported by public descriptions of U.S. systems, not a sensor-by-sensor account of every North Korean test.

1. Infrared satellites detect launch-related events
The U.S. Space Force describes the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) as a space-and-ground capability for missile early warning, missile defense, battlespace awareness and technical intelligence. Its description includes satellites in geosynchronous and highly elliptical orbits, legacy Defense Support Program satellites, and associated ground systems. SBIRS sensors process events onboard and send detected-event information and raw data to the ground. U.S. Space Force: Space-Based Infrared System

Infrared sensing can provide an early indication of a launch and initial information about the event. It does not, on its own, establish a fully precise account of the missile’s later flight.

- Everything You Need - The Cobra RAD 480i radar detector comes with a 12V vehicle power cord, suction cup car windshield mount, and a hook and loop fastener for dash mounting, for wherever the road takes you.
2. Ground systems process and distribute warning information
Satellite data must be processed and passed to users. JTAGS is one documented example: its manufacturer says it receives direct down-linked data from overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) satellites, including DSP and SBIRS sensors, and distributes near-real-time warning, alerting and cueing information through theater communications networks. Lockheed Martin: JTAGS
This processing and communications stage turns sensor observations into information that military users can act on. It is distinct from the sensors’ initial detection and from the continuing observations needed to refine a flight path.

- UNSURPASSED RANGE & SENSITIVITY: Industry Leading Performance with Advanced False Alert Filtering is THE choice for drivers who demand the highest level of protection.
- DUAL ANTENNA'S WITH DIRECTIONAL ARROWS: allows the R7 to detect threats from all 4 directions 360° protection, with Arrows displaying the direction of the threat, it even shows the band & signal strength for each. Perfect just got better!
- GPS TECHNOLOGY: Using GPS the R7 can remember and mute common false alerts (such as retail store automatic doors) along your regularly driven routes so you never have to listen to the same false alert twice.
- RED LIGHT AND SPEED CAMERA ALERTS: Preloaded Red Light and Speed Camera locations with Free Database and Firmware updates ensures your detector will never be out of date.
- LARGE MULTI-COLOR OLED DISPLAY: is easy-to-Read and allows for more useful information to be displayed at once, including up to 4 signals simultaneously. This improves your overall situational awareness.
3. Radar observations help refine the track
Ground-based radar can contribute observations of a missile in flight. A technical report from the Open Nuclear Network explains that radar tracking can help produce a more precise trajectory estimate, while infrared early-warning satellites can detect a launch and cue ground sensors. Radar and infrared satellites therefore have complementary roles: infrared sensing can flag a launch, while radar observations can add information about the missile’s subsequent movement.

4. Officials may release a short public summary
A February 11, 2017, USFK/USSTRATCOM statement said U.S. systems detected and tracked what USSTRATCOM assessed to be a North Korean medium- or intermediate-range ballistic missile launched near Kusŏng at 7:55 a.m. KST. It reported that “The missile was tracked over North Korea and into the East Sea,” and that NORAD assessed it posed no threat to North America. USFK: USSTRATCOM Detects North Korean Missile Launch
That release shows the kind of concise result officials may publish. It does not identify every sensor involved or explain the complete process used to combine observations. It is a dated example, not a description of every test or of current assets.

Why can some missile paths be harder to track?
A missile following a conventional ballistic trajectory is easier to model than one flying low or changing direction. The Open Nuclear Network report notes that infrared systems can detect a launch and cue ground sensors, but cannot by themselves precisely deduce the post-burnout path of a missile that does not follow a conventional ballistic trajectory. Radar can improve estimates, yet altitude or direction changes can introduce calculation errors. These are limits on precision, not proof that such missiles cannot be detected.

What is known—and not known—about current warning systems?
The U.S. Space Systems Command says it delivers space-based missile warning, tracking and defense capabilities and describes Next-Gen OPIR as replacing the aging SBIRS constellation. This establishes a program transition, but not which particular satellites or other assets handled an individual North Korean launch. The public descriptions also do not provide a complete, current operational order of battle. Space Systems Command: Space Sensing

Public sources reviewed here also do not establish, test by test, how South Korean and Japanese sensors contributed or detail classified data-sharing and fusion arrangements. A public announcement that a missile was detected or tracked should not be read as a complete account of those arrangements.
