For online play, you need an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local play is also available.
How do the motion controls work?
Hold or attach compatible Joy-Con controllers, then move them as the selected sport requires. The game translates motion into actions: Nintendo gives curving a bowling ball and adding spin to a tennis shot as examples. The mapping depends on the sport and selected mode, so motion control is not a one-to-one simulation of every real-world movement. Nintendo describes it this way: Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
(Nintendo’s game page).

Which controllers and play styles are compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports?
Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con for motion input. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible. The game does not support Handheld Mode; Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best experience on Switch, Switch OLED and Switch 2. The product page also lists TV and Tabletop play, with compatibility and experience caveats for Switch Lite.

| Setup | What it is for | Key compatibility detail |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Joy-Con motion controls | Sport-specific motion input; controller arrangement depends on sport and selected mode. | Uses compatible Joy-Con. Pro Controllers are not compatible. |
| Soccer Leg-Strap Mode | Place a Joy-Con in the Leg Strap and use a kicking motion for supported Soccer gameplay. | Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot be used with the Leg Strap. |
How does Soccer Leg-Strap Mode work?
Attach a compatible Joy-Con to the Leg Strap, secure the strap to your leg, and use a kicking motion when playing the relevant Soccer mode. Nintendo describes the strap as required for some Soccer gameplay and provides an in-game option to switch to Leg-Strap Mode in Soccer; it is not needed for every sport or mode.
The physical game edition includes a Leg Strap. If you have the digital edition, Nintendo says the accessory can be purchased separately. The strap does not work with Joy-Con 2.

- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements

How do local and online play differ?
| Play option | What to expect | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Local play | Play with others in person on the same system or through supported local setups; supported player arrangements depend on the sport. | No online membership is needed for local play. |
| Play Globally | Match with players online. Nintendo says points earned through online random matchmaking can be redeemed for in-game rewards, and players can aim for the Pro League. | Internet access, a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
| Play with Friends | Play online with friends; in some sports, two players on one system can team up online. | Internet access, a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. |
Nintendo Support states: An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.
If you select Play Globally without membership, Nintendo says you can enter a trial competition against computer opponents rather than regular online matchmaking.
Can I use voice chat when playing online with others?
For Play with Friends, Nintendo says voice chat is available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, subject to membership and age or account restrictions. On Switch 2, you can play while chatting through GameChat. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for current eligibility details and setup instructions.

What does the Wi-Fi indicator mean?
Nintendo says the in-game Wi-Fi indicator appears when the connection quality for one or more participants is low. If it appears repeatedly, check your internet connection and follow Nintendo’s network troubleshooting guidance; the icon does not identify which participant is having the issue. Nintendo’s reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum bandwidth, latency target, region, or server architecture.
If motion input or wireless controller behavior is the issue rather than the in-game connection indicator, use Nintendo’s separate Joy-Con troubleshooting steps in the support FAQ.

- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.

How should I set up the play area?
Nintendo advises players to wear the wrist straps and leave adequate room around themselves before playing. Keep the area clear so a swing or step does not hit another person, furniture, or the television.
