Nintendo says it sets software prices title by title, taking regional market conditions and rising development costs into account. Company executives have also pointed to a game’s content and the amount of play it offers. Nintendo has not published a formula, fixed benchmark, or weighting for these factors.
What Nintendo says goes into a game’s price
In Nintendo’s May 2025 financial-results Q&A, president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company considers factors in each region when setting product prices. He identified regional market conditions and consumers’ impressions of prices as part of that evaluation, and said the same regional considerations apply to software. Nintendo’s 2025 financial-results Q&A is an explanation of its approach, not a price-setting formula.

Development costs and game file size
Furukawa said software pricing also takes account of rising costs, including larger game files and longer development periods. He described Nintendo as considering an appropriate price for each title; he did not specify how much either cost factor changes a game’s price.

In an April 2025 interview about Mario Kart World, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said the company considers a game’s content and the extended play its gameplay experiences provide, among other factors. That is Bowser’s description of Nintendo’s thinking in the context of that game, not a complete or universal pricing rule. The Washington Post interview discussed an $79.99 price figure at that time; it should not be treated as a current price or a company-wide benchmark.

Why region and affordability matter
Nintendo’s regional approach means a software price is not determined only by a game’s contents or development costs. Furukawa’s 2025 explanation referred to consumers’ price impressions, exchange-rate differences from the original Switch launch, and regional market conditions when discussing hardware; he said regional factors also apply to software. The statement does not disclose how Nintendo weighs one region’s conditions against another’s.
At Nintendo’s June 2025 shareholder meeting, Furukawa said the company believes the price of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers, while stressing the importance of experiences that demonstrate value to consumers. He also said Nintendo monitors whether the system’s price could become a barrier for young consumers. Those comments describe Nintendo’s view of Switch 2 hardware and consumer value; they do not establish a software pricing threshold. Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A provides that context.

What Nintendo has—and has not—disclosed
Taken together, the statements identify considerations rather than a method readers can use to calculate a game’s price. Nintendo has not disclosed the relative weight of content, development time, file size, regional conditions, or consumers’ price impressions. Nor do these sources establish a universal price benchmark for Nintendo games.

For a comparison between two games, the documented questions are whether Nintendo has discussed their content or play experience, whether the company has cited relevant development or file-size costs, and which region and date a quoted price refers to. Those points can help explain the context around a price, but they cannot reveal Nintendo’s internal calculation.

How physical and digital distribution fit in
In a 2013 Q&A, then-president Satoru Iwata said packaged games sold through physical distribution had to account for physical costs and profit margins for distributors and retailers, limiting pricing flexibility. He also discussed Nintendo’s experiments with digital pricing and marketing at the time. This is historical context, not evidence of a current rule for Nintendo’s games or digital sales. The 2013 Q&A reflects the distribution environment discussed then.
