NFL injury reports have two separate parts: a practice report that records a player’s injury and practice participation, and a game status report that indicates expected availability. “Limited” describes practice participation; “Questionable” is a game status. Neither practice participation nor a status label guarantees whether a player will play.
What the two parts of an NFL injury report mean
The NFL’s 2017 Injury Report Policy describes the Practice Report as an account of reportable injuries and a player’s level of participation during the practice week. It says the report is expected to provide clubs and the public an accurate description of both. The Game Status Report is separate: it communicates the player’s expected availability for the upcoming game.

That distinction matters when reading a report. A practice entry tells you what the player did in practice; the game status tells you how the team classifies his expected availability. A practice description is not itself a game prediction.
How to read practice participation
Practice participation is listed using three descriptions:
#1 Best Overall
- Did Not Participate: The player did not take part in practice.
- Limited Participation: The player took part on a limited basis.
- Full Participation: The player participated fully.
These descriptions do not replace the injury listing or the game status. The policy says reportable injuries must be listed even when a player practices fully and the team is certain he will play. It describes automatic reporting cases that include injuries causing a player to miss a game, miss or leave practice, or participate on a limited basis. An injury affecting performance may also need to be reported even if the player remains available.
When an absence is not injury-related
A player who is rested for a reason unrelated to injury should not receive an injury status on the Game Status Report. The practice entry can identify the absence as “Not Injury Related.” That notation distinguishes a rest from an injury-related missed practice.

What Out, Doubtful and Questionable mean
The NFL policy’s game status labels are Out, Doubtful and Questionable. They are the game-availability designations, not practice participation descriptions. The policy does not provide a probability for any label, so “Questionable” should not be read as a specific percentage chance of playing or as a guaranteed decision.
The policy also says that a player listed on the Practice Report during the week but omitted from the Game Status Report is one the team is certain will play. Read the two report elements together rather than treating a practice entry as the final game designation.
When NFL injury reports are due
The NFL’s 2026–2027 Important Dates calendar sets regular-season reporting deadlines by scheduled game day. Practice Reports are due by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. On a day the team practices, an estimated injury report is not accepted.
| Scheduled game day | Practice Report days | Game Status Report due |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Thursday, Friday and Saturday | Saturday |
| Wednesday | Sunday, Monday and Tuesday | Tuesday |
| Thursday | Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday | Wednesday |
| Friday or Saturday | Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday | Thursday |
| Sunday | Wednesday, Thursday and Friday | Friday |
Game Status Reports are due by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice. If a player’s condition changes after the initial Game Status Report, the calendar requires an update. These are the 2026 regular-season deadlines; the calendar notes that dates are subject to change.

A practical way to interpret a report
- Check the practice participation entry. Note whether the player did not participate, was limited or participated fully.
- Check whether the entry is injury-related. “Not Injury Related” identifies a non-injury practice absence, such as rest.
- Look for the separate Game Status Report. Its designation—Out, Doubtful or Questionable—addresses expected availability rather than practice activity.
- Check for a later update. A changed condition after the initial game report requires an update under the 2026 NFL calendar.
The rules establish what teams report and when; they do not quantify how accurately a particular designation predicts playing time or a final decision.
