To make suggestions more relevant, use a separate profile for each regular viewer, rate titles you have watched, and hide accidental or unwanted viewing from your activity.
How Netflix recommendations work
Netflix describes its recommendation system as a high-level prediction of what a member may enjoy. It draws on interactions with the service, similarities between members’ tastes, title attributes and contextual signals. Netflix says it does not use demographic information such as age or gender to make recommendation decisions. See Netflix’s explanation of its recommendation system.

Your profile’s activity is central
Viewing history and ratings help Netflix infer preferences. So do the genres you watch, how long you enjoy a title, and whether you start or finish it. Netflix also says preferred languages, time of day and the device being used can be among the signals it considers. It does not publish the weight assigned to each signal or a formula for how they combine.

Recommendations are tied to profiles, which have their own viewing activity, ratings and suggestions. If household members share one profile, their activity can contribute to the same profile’s recommendations. Netflix says that, over time, newer engagement outweighs older activity: “As you continue to enjoy Netflix over time, the titles you engage with more recently will outweigh titles you engaged with in the past in terms of driving our recommendations system.”

The homepage is personalized, not just sorted
Netflix may personalize which rows appear on the homepage, which titles are shown within each row and the order of those titles. Its help page says the strongest recommendations start at the left and proceed right, except when the system language is Arabic or Hebrew, where the layout runs right to left.
At profile setup, Netflix may invite you to choose titles you like to help start recommendations. If you skip that step, it says it begins with a diverse and popular set. Activity afterward informs suggestions. Netflix also describes a new TV experience that is rolling out, in which browsing actions such as watching trailers or adding a thumbs-up may prompt recommendation updates; the experience may not be identical for every subscriber or device.

Ways to improve your recommendations
1. Keep regular viewers on separate profiles
Use a separate profile for each person who regularly watches Netflix. This keeps each person’s viewing activity and ratings associated with their own set of suggestions, rather than mixing a household’s preferences into one profile. Netflix explains profile options in How to create, edit, or delete profiles.

2. Rate titles you have watched
Netflix offers “Like this,” “Love this!” and “Not for me.” Use them to provide direct feedback: “Love this!” is a stronger positive signal than “Like this,” while “Not for me” flags a poor match. Ratings are among the signals Netflix says it uses. The steps and rating options are described in How to rate TV shows and movies.

3. Watch titles that reflect what you want to see next
Choose and engage with titles that match your current interests. Because Netflix says recent activity carries more weight than older activity, newer viewing can better reflect a change in taste. Netflix does not publish a required number of watches, a minimum viewing duration or a guaranteed time for recommendations to change, so there is no reliable threshold to aim for.
4. Hide mistaken or unwanted viewing
If someone else used your profile or you watched a title accidentally, remove it from that profile’s viewing activity. In a browser, open Account, choose Profiles, open the profile’s Viewing activity, then select the hide icon beside the title or episode. Netflix says a hidden title will not be used for recommendations unless it is watched again, and it will also be removed from Continue Watching. Changes can take up to 24 hours to appear on all devices. Hiding through Viewing activity is unavailable from a Netflix Kids profile. See How to hide titles from viewing history.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
5. Search for a specific title directly
If you already know what you want to watch, search the catalog available to you instead of waiting for it to appear in a recommendation row. Netflix says search results are influenced by your query as well as signals such as similar members’ searches and its prediction of what you may enjoy.

6. Use maturity controls for access boundaries
Profile maturity ratings and title blocking limit which content a profile can access; they are not general preference-tuning tools. Use them to set content boundaries rather than to try to steer recommendations. Netflix documents these options in How to set profile maturity ratings or block titles.

What Netflix does not disclose
Netflix’s public description does not specify the recommendation model’s architecture, the exact weight of each signal, how many views or ratings it takes to change suggestions, or a guaranteed adaptation time. It also does not provide a quantified measure of recommendation accuracy. Treat personalization as an evolving estimate, not a setting with a predictable score or instant reset.
