NetApp Novus is designed to address AI-storage bottlenecks by separating metadata services from the data path, so the two can scale independently within one namespace. Its initial announced configuration pairs Novus Data Director software on qualified Supermicro infrastructure with NetApp ONTAP data services on AFF A90 systems. NetApp’s throughput and GPU-scale figures describe design capability, not verified production results.
Why metadata can become an AI-storage bottleneck
AI workloads can place different demands on storage at once: metadata operations must coordinate access to files, while the data path must move large volumes of data to GPU clusters. NetApp argues that conventional architectures can constrain AI-factory scale when metadata and data capacity have to scale together. If storage cannot deliver data quickly enough, GPUs may wait rather than process work.

NetApp says GPU utilization can fall below 30% when an AI factory cannot feed its GPUs enough data. That is the company’s characterization, not a universal or independently measured utilization rate. Syam Nair, NetApp’s chief product officer, put the concern this way: “AI factories struggle and GPU economics collapse when data can’t keep up,”

Novus’s central design choice is to put metadata services in a separate software tier from the data path. NetApp says this lets metadata services, throughput, capacity, and concurrency scale independently under a shared namespace using industry-standard NFS. In principle, that avoids requiring metadata resources and data-serving resources to grow in lockstep as an AI environment expands.

That is an architectural approach to a potential bottleneck, not evidence that Novus eliminates metadata constraints in every workload or deployment. Results will depend on the configured systems and workload; the announcement does not establish comparative performance against competing architectures.
What the initial Novus architecture includes
NetApp’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes the initial configuration as a combination of a metadata software tier and a separate data tier:
Rank #2
- Metadata tier: Novus Data Director running on qualified Supermicro infrastructure.
- Data tier: NetApp ONTAP data services running on NetApp AFF A90 systems.
- Namespace and protocol: A shared namespace accessed using NFS, which NetApp describes as industry-standard.
Novus is therefore an architecture for large AI-factory storage environments, not simply a new AFF A90 model. The announcement does not provide a full deployment guide or detailed configuration requirements beyond identifying these initial components.
What Novus’s scale figures do—and do not—show
NetApp presents Novus as architected to exceed 100 TB/s of aggregate throughput. Its product page also describes a scale figure of 50K+ GPUs at approximately 2 GB/second. Both are vendor claims about the architecture’s capability; they should not be read as independently verified production benchmarks or proof that a particular installation will achieve those figures.

NetApp’s announcement also quotes Omdia Chief Analyst Tony Palmer, who says the firm’s modeling projects that the disaggregated architecture can scale to dozens of exabytes of effective capacity and 100 TB/s sequential read throughput. This is a projection based on observed testing, not a claim that a production deployment currently operates at that capacity or speed. The published material does not provide enough test methodology or customer deployment data to establish how the figures compare with alternatives.
What to evaluate before choosing an AI storage architecture
For a procurement decision, headline throughput is only one part of the fit. Compare architectures on the dimensions that determine whether they can serve a specific GPU environment:
- Metadata scaling: Can metadata services expand separately from the data-serving tier?
- Namespace and protocol: Does the shared namespace and protocol support match the workload and existing environment?
- Evidence behind performance claims: Distinguish design targets and projections from independently measured results under disclosed conditions.
- Supported data systems: Confirm which server and storage configurations are qualified, rather than assuming that any Supermicro or NetApp system is supported.
- Deployment and operations: Assess the complexity of managing separate tiers and how they fit existing infrastructure and service arrangements.
- Workload fit and scale: Validate expected concurrency, GPU count, capacity needs, and access patterns for the actual deployment.
- Commercial terms: Confirm configuration availability, delivery timing, price, and service terms directly with NetApp or a channel partner.
Availability and what remains unverified
NetApp said Novus was orderable when announced on September 29, 2026. That dated statement does not establish current stock, delivery schedules, available configurations, or price. Buyers should verify those details with NetApp or its channel partners. The announcement identifies qualified Supermicro infrastructure and AFF A90 systems as the initial configuration; it does not establish customer deployment results or a full independent benchmark against other AI-storage options.
