How Music Royalties Are Calculated Across Streaming Services

Streaming royalties are allocated through service-specific pools and licensing agreements—not a universal price per play. See how streamshare works and why artist payouts differ.

Streaming services generally do not pay artists a fixed amount for each play. They calculate royalty payments under licensing agreements, allocate money using rules that can vary by service and market, and pay rights holders or licensors—not necessarily the performer directly. An artist’s actual earnings then depend on the agreements governing the recording and the songwriting rights.

Why there is no universal per-stream rate

A figure described as “the rate per stream” is usually an estimate: someone divides a reported or estimated payment by a stream count. It can be useful as a rough illustration only when its assumptions are clear. It is not a posted price that every service owes for every play, nor a dependable way to forecast an individual artist’s income.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There are several separate calculations behind a payout. A service determines what money is available under its licenses; applies its rules to decide how that pool is allocated; pays the relevant rights holders or licensors; and those parties account to artists, songwriters, and other participants under their own agreements. A stream count alone reveals only one part of that chain.

Spotify explicitly says it does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate. It says payments can vary with how music is streamed and with an artist’s agreements with labels or distributors (Spotify Support, “Understanding Spotify royalties”). Its explanation is specific to Spotify, but it captures why an average divided by plays should not be mistaken for a guaranteed artist payment.

How a streaming royalty pool is allocated

Start with the pool

Streaming royalties are governed by negotiated licensing agreements. Spotify’s annual report says music royalties are typically calculated monthly and may be based on subscription revenue, advertising revenue, user or usage measures, or a combination of them. The exact basis depends on the relevant agreement. As a result, the revenue available for royalties can change with the market, subscription and advertising revenue, listening patterns, and contractual terms.

This is why a stream in one country, month, or service cannot automatically be assigned the same monetary value as a stream elsewhere. Even if two listeners each play a track once, the relevant market’s pool and allocation rules may differ. The public materials cited here do not establish one common formula or one comparable rate for all services and territories.

Then calculate stream share

Spotify describes its recording-royalty allocation as streamshare rather than a fixed price per play. In its Loud & Clear FAQ, the company defines the monthly, country-level calculation as an artist’s or rights holder’s streams in that market divided by all streams in that market; that share is applied to the market’s royalty pool.

In simplified form:

Share of eligible streams in a market × that market’s royalty pool = an approximate share of the pool.

For illustration only, if a hypothetical rights holder accounted for 0.1% of the streams counted in a hypothetical market, applying that share to a hypothetical $100,000 pool would produce $100 before any rights-holder or artist-side arrangements. Those numbers are invented solely to show the arithmetic; they are not a reported platform rate or forecast. Actual rules, qualifying plays, licensing terms, and the rights holder’s position determine the real calculation.

Streamshare is a platform-level allocation. It does not by itself state what a performer or songwriter personally receives. The calculation may begin with an artist’s or rightsholder’s share of listening, but the platform pays according to its contractual relationships with the relevant licensors and rights holders.

What Spotify and Apple Music publish about their methods

Spotify’s official materials describe a market-level streamshare calculation for recording royalties. Apple Music for Artists also describes streaming royalties as calculated on a stream-share basis, while noting that a play still has a value. That shared terminology does not establish that the services use identical pool definitions, licensing contracts, eligibility rules, or payment arrangements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful comparison therefore asks what each service actually documents, rather than ranking services by a single online “per-stream” number. The official materials available for Spotify and Apple Music support a stream-share description, but do not establish a complete, directly comparable formula for every major service. Nor do they prove that every service uses streamshare in the same way.

Comparison question What to establish
Pool basis Which subscription, advertising, or other revenues contribute under the service’s licenses, and how often the royalty calculation is made.
Allocation method Whether the service documents market-level streamshare, a listener-centric approach, or another method, and how it defines the relevant market.
Eligibility and counting Which plays qualify, whether thresholds apply, and what exclusions or other counting rules affect the total.
Payment flow Which recording and publishing rights holders are paid by the service and how money is passed onward.
Artist-side agreement What a label, distributor, publisher, or collection society is required to pay or account for, including applicable deductions and timing.

For a fair comparison, use the same territory, period, rights category, and definition of a qualifying play wherever the information is available. If those assumptions do not match, a difference between two estimated averages may reflect different inputs rather than a higher guaranteed price on one service. Where an official service explanation does not state a comparable value, it is more accurate to say the value is not established than to fill the gap with an estimate presented as fact.

Who receives the platform payment

Recording royalties

For Spotify, recording royalties are paid to rights holders and distributed to artists through the licensor chosen to deliver the music, typically a label or distributor. The person whose name appears as the performer is therefore not necessarily the party receiving the platform’s payment first. The route and the amount that ultimately reach the artist depend on the relevant agreements.

Songwriting and publishing royalties

Songwriting-side payments are distinct from recording royalties. They may involve publishers or collection societies, and the applicable rights and agreements are not the same as those governing the sound recording. A stream count for a track does not tell a songwriter how much publishing income was credited, who collected it, or how it was divided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why two artists can receive different amounts

Spotify says it cannot determine an individual artist’s payment because it does not know the private agreements artists and songwriters have with labels, publishers, or collecting societies. Distributor fees, label terms, publishing splits, recoupment, and payment schedules can affect what an individual sees. The sources cited here do not establish the terms of any specific person’s contract, so those details need to be checked in the person’s own agreements and statements.

This separation explains why a service-wide payout total or average cannot be read as personal take-home income. The service’s calculation concerns its contractual payment to rights holders or licensors. An artist’s statement reflects what happens afterward under their particular arrangements, which may cover different rights, deductions, and payment timing.

Spotify’s published figures and eligibility rule

Published figure or rule What it means—and what it does not mean
More than $11 billion paid to the music industry in 2025 Spotify reported this overall industry payout on January 28, 2026. It is a company-wide figure, not a forecast of what an artist will earn.
Over $11,000 on average for artists accounting for one in every million Spotify streams in 2025 Spotify gives this platform-specific example on its Loud & Clear process page. It is an average cited by Spotify, not a guaranteed rate for an artist, another service, or another year.
Roughly two-thirds of every dollar generated from music paid to artists’ and songwriters’ rights holders This is Spotify’s broad wording in its undated Loud & Clear FAQ. It refers to rights holders; it does not mean an individual artist personally receives two-thirds of subscription revenue.
At least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months Under a Spotify-specific recorded-music policy effective April 2024, a track must meet this threshold to be included in Spotify’s recorded-music royalty-pool calculation. It is not a general streaming-industry rule or a statement about songwriter royalties across services.

These figures answer different questions: one describes Spotify’s aggregate payouts, another is an example of an average tied to a specific stream-share level, a third describes the company’s broad distribution claim, and the fourth is an eligibility rule. None is a universal price per play. Keep the stated year, scope, and attribution attached when using them.

How to estimate earnings without mistaking an estimate for a rate

  1. Choose the exact rights and payee. Determine whether the question concerns recording royalties, songwriting/publishing income, or a particular person’s receipt after contractual splits. Do not add or compare amounts for different rights categories as if they were the same payment.
  2. Fix the service, market, and period. A useful estimate needs to identify the streaming service, territory, and time window. Spotify’s streamshare explanation, for example, is calculated each month in each country.
  3. Find the service’s relevant calculation and eligibility terms. Establish which pool and counted streams apply. A public average without comparable eligibility, revenue, and market assumptions is not enough to reconstruct an individual calculation.
  4. Apply the allocation only at the level it describes. If a published method allocates a pool by streamshare, the result is an estimated platform-level share for the relevant rights holder—not automatically the artist’s net payment.
  5. Check the statements and contracts that govern onward payment. Consult the relevant label, distributor, publisher, or collection-society accounting and the artist’s agreements to establish splits, deductions, recoupment, and timing. The platform’s stream count cannot supply those private terms.
  6. Label any remaining calculation as an estimate. If the pool, ownership, territory, contract, or statement data are missing, state the missing assumptions. Do not present a divided total as a contractual per-stream rate.

What a stream count can—and cannot—tell you

A stream count can show how much listening was reported under a service’s counting rules. When combined with a service’s pool information and allocation terms, it may help explain or approximate a rights holder’s share. It cannot on its own reveal the value of every play, because the relevant pool and terms can vary by market and period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nor can a stream count identify the artist’s final take-home amount. That requires knowing who owns or administers the relevant rights, which licensor receives the platform payment, how the applicable contracts divide it, and what the account statements report. Spotify specifically notes that it does not know those private agreements.

The available official information does not establish a current, comparable contractual per-stream rate for every major service, country, subscription tier, and rights category. The sound conclusion is not that plays have no economic value; it is that their value cannot be summarized accurately as one fixed number that applies to every artist and every play.
