But a mode name is not a promise that the appliance can match a dedicated fryer, full-size oven or stovetop: the mechanism, capacity, hardware and model-specific instructions set the limits.
How do multi-function kitchen appliances work?
They use shared controls to operate different combinations of heating elements, fans, lids, bowls, baskets and trays. The settings may be presets or sequences designed for particular tasks. What a mode can do depends on the appliance’s construction, not just the label on its control panel.

Air-fry mode moves hot air around food
An air fryer uses a fan to circulate hot air around food placed on an exposed tray or in a perforated basket. That airflow can brown and crisp exposed surfaces with little or no added oil. It is convection-style cooking, not deep frying: the food is not submerged in hot oil. KitchenAid explains the air-frying mechanism.

Multi-cookers use different hardware arrangements
“Multi-cooker” describes a category, not one standard design. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp 6QT, for example, uses interchangeable lids for pressure cooking and air frying. Instant Pot’s product information describes the two-lid arrangement.
#1 Best Overall
- ALL-IN-ONE ELECTRIC PRESSURE COOKER: Replace multiple appliances with one 9-in-1 multi cooker. Pressure cook, slow cook, make rice, sous vide, steam, sear/sauté, make yogurt, and more—all in a space-saving design built for everyday meals.
- COOK UP TO 2X FASTER*: HyperHeat technology builds pressure quickly to speed up cooking time compared to traditional methods, helping you get meals on the table faster. *Vs traditional slow cooking.
- SEAR AND SAUTÉ IN ONE POT: Skip extra pans—use the large cooking surface to sear meats and sauté ingredients directly in the pot for deeper flavor and fewer dishes.
- SERVE DIRECTLY FROM THE POT: The removable SimpliServe pot goes from cooker to table, making it easy to host, meal prep without transferring food, or serve meals for family dinners.
- FAMILY-SIZED 6.5 QT CAPACITY: Cook for a crowd with a large-capacity pot that fits up to a 4-lb chicken or 5-lb roast, feeding 8–10 people.
The Tefal Multicook Actifry MY741C40 takes a different approach: its top heating element serves air-fry programs, while its bottom element serves multicook programs. Some programs use the two elements at different stages rather than simultaneously. Its model-specific support and manual page also explains use restrictions for the bowl.
Countertop oven combinations add oven-style modes
An air-fryer toaster oven combines fan-assisted air frying with functions associated with a small oven. Instant Pot lists air fry, bake, broil, roast, toast, rotisserie, reheat, dehydrate, proof and slow cook for its Omni Plus 18L. Those are features of that model, not a universal list for air-fryer ovens. See Instant Pot’s Omni Plus product page.

What can’t one appliance necessarily replace?
A different cooking method is not an equivalent one
Air frying uses circulating hot air; deep frying uses hot oil around the food. Pressure cooking, slow cooking, steaming and dry-heat roasting likewise rely on different conditions. A multi-function appliance may offer several of these modes, but that does not make their cooking processes or results interchangeable. For the distinction between air frying and oven cooking, see KitchenAid’s comparison.
A countertop unit may not replace a full-size oven’s capacity
KitchenAid notes that an air fryer generally cooks one dish at a time, whereas a full-size oven can handle multiple dishes or larger portions. Usable space, tray or basket shape, and batch size matter as much as the number of advertised modes. A countertop appliance may suit smaller batches while still being a poor fit for cooking several dishes together.

Bowls and accessories may not transfer to other appliances
For the Tefal MY741C40, the manufacturer says the bowl is designed for that appliance and cannot be used on a hob or in an oven. Its support information recommends the included bowl or a replacement for that model and does not guarantee compatibility with other brands. This is specific to that Tefal model; check the manual for any appliance before using an accessory in another device, on a hob, or in an oven.
Modes may require different configurations
Some functions cannot operate at once because they require different hardware or stages. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp uses separate interchangeable lids for pressure cooking and air frying; on the Tefal MY741C40, certain programs run the top and bottom elements at different stages. A list of modes does not mean every mode is available in every configuration or can run concurrently.

Manual limits still govern operation
Follow the instructions for the exact model, including limits on fill level, placement, accessories and cleaning. For example, a KitchenAid multi-cooker manual directs users to cook only in its removable container, stay below the Max Fill line and check food temperature after a power interruption. Those directions apply to the covered appliance, not to every multi-cooker. Read the KitchenAid manual or consult the manual supplied with your own model.

How to compare appliances for the jobs you need
Start with the cooking tasks you actually do, then check whether the appliance’s construction and capacity suit them. A larger count of advertised functions is not, by itself, evidence that an appliance will replace more of your kitchen.

- Check usable capacity. Consider portions, basket or tray dimensions, and whether the appliance can handle multiple dishes at once. Compare the actual cooking space with your usual batch size.
- Understand the hardware. Find out whether functions use one lid or interchangeable lids, which heating elements and fan are involved, and whether a mode requires a particular tray or basket.
- Verify accessory compatibility. Check which parts are safe for the dishwasher, oven or hob, and whether replacement bowls or racks must be made for that model.
- Read the model’s safety instructions. Look for fill marks, clearance and placement rules, cleaning requirements, and any required sequence for changing lids or inserting accessories. Presets are a convenience, not a replacement for food-safety directions or the manual.
