A multi-camera phone setup turns each phone into a network video source: camera apps capture video, send feeds across a shared local network, and compatible production software receives, monitors, and switches between them. The practical limits depend on the format and bitrate of every feed, the network and its wireless conditions, and the processing time in the phones and receiver. A feed that arrives quickly is not necessarily synchronized with other cameras at the instant of capture.
How a multi-camera phone setup works
Each phone captures video and sends it over an IP network to a receiver, usually a computer or production system. That receiver discovers the sources, displays them for monitoring, and lets an operator select which camera is live. A production system can then send the composed program onward to a meeting or livestream destination. The specific receiver and production software must support the transport format used by the phone app; having multiple camera apps alone does not make a compatible system.

NDI describes its mobile camera app as a source for live production and conferencing, and its app ecosystem as sending and receiving video over standard networks. Those descriptions illustrate the workflow, but do not mean every phone, app, receiver, and production tool is interchangeable. Check compatibility for the exact phone operating system, app, and receiving software you plan to use. NDI Camera and NDI Apps

2. Carry the feeds over a network
The streams travel over a local IP network, commonly Wi-Fi for phones. The network carries the video traffic and, in a discoverable-source workflow, must also allow the receiver to find the phones. NDI says its HX formats can be useful in Wi-Fi and WAN contexts because they can provide similar video quality at a lower bitrate than NDI High Bandwidth. That is a format-level benefit, not a promise that a particular Wi-Fi network can support any chosen number of feeds. NDI encoding and decoding documentation
3. Receive, monitor, and switch
The receiving system decodes the streams and presents them to the operator. The operator can preview the angles and switch the program output among them. The resulting production may be sent to a conferencing or streaming destination, but the configuration for that final distribution depends on the production and publishing software; there is no single universal phone-to-stream setup.
How to plan bandwidth for multiple phone feeds
Network demand grows with the number of simultaneous feeds and with each feed’s resolution, frame rate, and codec. A useful first estimate is N × B, where N is the number of concurrent phones and B is the bitrate in megabits per second for one selected stream. This estimates video payload only. It is arithmetic applied to the format figures below, not a universal network-design rule or a prediction of what a particular phone app will transmit.

| Format and example | Published bitrate | Published latency figure |
|---|---|---|
| NDI HX2, 1080p60, H.264 | Approximately 16 Mbps | NDI lists average glass-to-glass latency under 150 ms for HX2. |
| NDI HX2, 1080p60, H.265 | Approximately 11 Mbps | |
| NDI HX2, 2160p60, H.264 | Approximately 30 Mbps | |
| NDI HX2, 2160p60, H.265 | Approximately 21 Mbps | |
| NDI HX3, 1080p60, H.264 | Approximately 62 Mbps | NDI lists average glass-to-glass latency under 100 ms for HX3. |
| NDI HX3, 1080p60, H.265 | Approximately 50 Mbps | |
| NDI HX3, 2160p60, H.264 | Approximately 110 Mbps | |
| NDI HX3, 2160p60, H.265 | Approximately 84 Mbps |
These comparisons show why “compressed” or “wireless” is not enough information to estimate capacity: the format, resolution, frame rate, and codec all change the per-feed load. HX3 is not automatically the lower-bandwidth choice relative to HX2; use the rate for the actual intended format, rather than comparing format names alone. NDI HX2 figures · NDI HX3 figures
HX3 H.265 maximum bandwidth examples
NDI’s HX3 H.265 table specifies maximum bandwidth for 8-bit 4:2:0 streams in these formats. The 640×360 proxy rate shown is 3 Mbps for each listed line. The figures are table maximums, not generic measurements of what a phone app will use.
| HX3 H.265 format | Maximum bandwidth | Proxy listed in the table |
|---|---|---|
| 1080 50i | 20 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
| 1080 60i | 25 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
| 1080 50p | 41 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
| 1080 60p | 50 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
| 3840×2160 50p | 70 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
| 3840×2160 60p | 84 Mbps | 640×360 25/30p, 3 Mbps |
For example, four streams each configured around 50 Mbps imply roughly 200 Mbps of video payload before protocol overhead, other network traffic, bursts, or changes in wireless conditions. The estimate is useful for spotting a potentially heavy workload, not for declaring a network adequate. Leave capacity beyond the payload estimate; the documentation does not establish a universal headroom percentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not use an internet plan’s advertised download speed as a substitute for checking local Wi-Fi capacity. A phone production may rely on traffic between devices inside the venue or home, and reliable simultaneous delivery also depends on wireless conditions and concurrent use. The sources do not establish a universal minimum bandwidth, a maximum number of phones per router, or a required Wi-Fi generation.

What latency figures mean in practice
Latency is the delay between a video event at the camera and its appearance at the receiving display. “Glass-to-glass” describes that camera-to-display path, but the delay in a real production chain can include capture, encoding, network transport, decoding, switching, buffering, and display processing. NDI’s published HX2 and HX3 figures should therefore be read as vendor format figures, not guaranteed performance for every phone, wireless network, receiver, or end-to-end production.
NDI states that “Latency is both a factor of the network connection and the endpoint products.” Its encoding documentation also notes that technical codec latency and practical implementation behavior differ. In other words, the format contributes to the result, but so do the network and the sending and receiving devices. NDI’s explanation of latency and encoding
NDI’s HX3 stream specifications list a GOP size of 20 frames, glass-to-glass latency below 100 ms, and an I-frame request response below 80 ms. Those are format specifications; they do not establish the delay of a complete system under a reader’s conditions. A practical test should observe the actual picture and sound through the entire setup rather than treating a published latency number as a guaranteed switching delay. Low latency is not the same as synchronized capture
For a live program, feeds may be useful if they arrive consistently enough to preview and switch. For stereo vision, motion analysis, multi-view reconstruction, or stitching, the requirement can be different: all cameras may need to expose their sensors at nearly the same instant. A low network delay does not prove that two phones captured a frame simultaneously. Network delivery time and camera exposure timing are separate issues.

Research methods show what specialized synchronization can achieve
Ansari, Wadhwa, Garg, and Chen’s 2018 paper, “Wireless Software Synchronization of Multiple Distributed Cameras,” describes a system that estimates network delay, synchronizes device clocks, and aligns stream timestamp phase. The authors report synchronization accuracy below 250 microseconds in their validation. This is a result for their tested research method, not a built-in capability of ordinary live-streaming apps. Ansari et al., 2018
A 2021 paper by Akhmetyanov, Kornilova, Faizullin, Pozo, and Ferrer describes an Android application that synchronizes video and evaluates it on 47 physical devices. The authors report drift below 1.2 ms per minute for most devices considered. Their work emphasizes that aligning device clocks is not enough: camera frame timing must also be aligned. The reported result applies to that approach and its evaluated devices, not arbitrary phones or camera apps. Akhmetyanov et al., 2021
Hardware genlock or triggering and post-capture alignment are other approaches discussed in the literature. A clapperboard can provide a recognizable event for editing footage into alignment, but it does not make the cameras capture every later frame together. The 2018 paper notes that, in the context it describes, this approach is limited to half a frame duration. If the work depends on precise simultaneous exposure, confirm that the capture system specifically supports synchronization at the required precision.
Set up and test the intended workload
There is no universal router model or pass/fail throughput threshold established for all multi-camera phone setups. Plan around the actual formats and location, then verify the full system with all planned sources active. This checklist turns the format and network constraints into a practical setup sequence.

- Confirm compatibility. Check that the camera app runs on each phone and that the receiving software accepts its transport format. Confirm that the receiver can discover and receive multiple sources; do not assume support based only on a phone’s camera features.
- Put sources and receiver on a usable local network. Join the phones and receiver to the intended network and confirm discovery in that specific home, venue, or office. Network isolation or venue policies can prevent devices from finding each other even when they appear connected.
- Choose the intended stream settings. Set a consistent resolution and frame rate where possible, then identify the codec and per-feed rate for the chosen format. If the network is constrained, reduce the bandwidth setting, resolution, or frame rate and assess the resulting picture quality before the production.
- Estimate aggregate demand. Multiply the selected per-stream rate by the number of concurrent feeds. Treat the result as video payload, then allow additional capacity for protocol overhead, other traffic, bursts, and wireless variability. Do not infer a reliable multi-feed capacity from an internet download plan.
- Run every feed at once in its actual location. Test with phones in their planned positions, the real receiving computer, and expected competing network use. A test with one phone or an empty venue does not establish behavior under the complete workload.
- Inspect the whole production path. Watch for freezes, dropped or stuttering frames, connection-meter changes, slow source discovery, switching delay, and audio/video alignment. If performance is unstable, lower the stream load or reduce competing traffic, then retest all feeds together.
NDI Camera’s high, medium, and low bandwidth choices and its connection meter can help an operator identify or adjust a source’s connection state. They are useful cues, but neither guarantees that the aggregate network load is safe. A dedicated router can be a reasonable way to create a controlled network when the existing one is unreliable, but the cited documentation does not make one mandatory or specify a model or Wi-Fi generation.
Choose the workflow for the job
The right approach depends on what “working” means for the production. For a live event, consistent delivery and manageable switching delay may matter more than sensor-level synchronization. For technical multi-view work, capture timing may be the deciding requirement. Resolve that distinction before buying equipment or choosing app settings.
- Live switching: Prioritize app/receiver compatibility, source discovery, stable delivery of all feeds, and acceptable end-to-end delay in the actual venue.
- High-detail or high-frame-rate production: Check the bitrate for the specific codec and format; more pixels or frames can materially increase per-feed demand.
- Bandwidth-constrained Wi-Fi: Compare supported lower-bitrate formats and app bandwidth controls, then verify image quality and aggregate stability in place. A lower bitrate can ease network load, but no format alone guarantees reliable wireless performance.
- Simultaneous-capture analysis: Look for an explicit capture-synchronization method with evidence relevant to the devices and timing precision required. Ordinary stream latency specifications do not answer that question.
The useful design decision is not simply “How fast is the router?” It is whether the complete combination of phones, camera apps, formats, network, receiver, and production software sustains the intended feeds at the quality and timing the job requires.
