What a Steam demo is
A Steam demo is a separate Steam application associated with a full game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains that developers can present the demo on the full game’s store page and use it to let players try the game before buying. The demo therefore has its own installable content and library behavior, even though it is linked to the commercial release. Because each store page can be configured differently, the exact button text is not identical for every title. You may see Add to Library, Download Demo, or a similarly worded demo action. The reliable place to start is the full game’s Steam store page, not the Add Non-Steam Game command in your library.
How to add a demo to your Steam Library
1. Open the full game’s store page
- Start the Steam client or open Steam in a web browser while signed in to the account that will play the demo.
- Search for the game by name and open its official store page.
- Look near the main purchase area for a section labeled Demo or an equivalent trial option.
The demo control is supplied by the game’s store-page configuration. If a title has no visible demo action, Steam is not presenting an available demo through that page at that moment. Do not substitute a non-Steam shortcut workflow: Steam Support’s Add Non-Steam Games to a Library instructions are for creating a shortcut to software that is already installed on your computer, not for acquiring a Steam demo.

2. Choose the demo action shown by Steam
Select the button that identifies the demo. Depending on the page setup, the action may be:
- Add to Library: Steam associates the demo with your account and places it in the library. You can then install it from the library entry.
- Download Demo: Steam begins the download flow directly, or adds the demo and proceeds toward installation.
Follow the confirmation or download dialog that appears. The wording can differ between titles, but the important test is that Steam offers the demo as Steam content rather than as an external file or a shortcut.
3. Find the new entry in Library
- Open Library in Steam.
- Use the search box to enter the game or demo name.
- Select the demo entry, then choose Install if it has not already started downloading.
- Pick an available Steam library folder, review the required disk space shown by Steam, and start the installation.
A demo may be listed separately from the full game because it is a distinct application. If the full game and demo use similar names, read the entry carefully before installing so you do not select the paid release by mistake.
How to uninstall an installed Steam demo
Use the Library context menu
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Locate the installed demo in the left-hand games list or by searching its name.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall, then confirm the prompt.
This is the standard Steam content-removal path documented by Steam Support for installed game content. The support article is titled Installing a game from a disc; although its title concerns disc installation, the documented Library menu path applies to removing installed Steam content.

After confirmation, Steam removes the demo’s installed files from the selected Steam library location. The operation does not uninstall the Steam client, remove the full game, or delete unrelated games. If a download or update is still running, pause it first and then repeat the Manage > Uninstall path after Steam has returned the entry to a normal state.
Uninstalling versus deactivating a demo
These actions happen at different levels and should not be treated as synonyms.

Valve uses “deactivate” for the developer action that blocks downloads and launches. A player who simply chooses Uninstall has only removed local content. Valve’s documentation does not state one universal rule for how every uninstalled demo is displayed afterward or how every demo license can be reacquired.

Check the Library filters
A filter can hide a valid library entry without removing it. Clear active category, installed-only, operating-system, or other view filters, then search again for the demo’s name. The exact filter controls can vary with Steam’s current client layout, so check the Library view itself rather than assuming the demo was deleted.

Check Hidden Games
- In Steam’s top menu, select View.
- Choose Hidden Games.
- Find the demo in the hidden list.
- Right-click it, choose Manage, and select Remove from Hidden.
Steam Support documents this recovery route in Games Are Missing from my Library. Once it is removed from the hidden view, return to Library and search for the entry normally.
Confirm that you are checking the same account
Library contents are tied to the signed-in Steam account. If the demo was added while another account was active, it will not necessarily appear in the current account’s library. Sign out only after closing any active download, then sign in to the account that originally added the demo and search again.
Look for the demo as a separate application
Do not assume that selecting the full game’s entry will expose every demo control. Steamworks describes demos as separate applications associated with a full game, so the library may show a distinct demo row, a separately named item, or an entry grouped near the full release. Search the title without relying on the exact position of the full game in the list.

Open the game’s store page again. If Steam still shows a demo action, use that action to add or download it. If no demo action is shown, the page is not currently offering the demo through that configuration. Availability can be changed by the developer, and the official materials do not establish that every previously added demo remains reinstallable from the same location after it has been removed.

Can you reinstall a demo after uninstalling it?
Uninstalling removes the local installation, so it is technically different from removing an account association. However, there is no single official rule covering every demo’s post-uninstall library visibility or license behavior. Some demos may remain listed and offer an install button; others may require you to revisit the store page; a demo that has been deactivated may no longer be downloadable or launchable.
Use this order when you want to try an uninstalled demo again:
- Search for the demo in Library after clearing filters.
- Check View > Hidden Games and use Manage > Remove from Hidden if necessary.
- Open the full game’s store page and look for its current demo action.
- If neither location offers an install option, treat the demo as unavailable through the current Steam presentation rather than assuming that a local file was left behind.
Do not promise yourself that every demo will remain permanently visible or reinstallable. Valve’s cited documentation describes the separate-app model and developer deactivation, but it does not provide a universal post-uninstall policy for all demos.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using “Add Non-Steam Game” to obtain a demo
That command only adds a shortcut to software already present on the computer. It does not claim a Steam demo, download Steam depots, or create the demo’s Steam application record. Always use the demo control on the game’s Steam store page.
Confusing the full game with its demo
The two entries can have nearly identical names. Before selecting Install or Uninstall, verify that the entry is labeled as the demo. Removing the full game’s installation is a different action and is not required to remove the demo.
Assuming an uninstall is an account deletion
Manage > Uninstall removes installed content from the computer. It does not provide a general account-licence deletion control, and the official sources do not establish that every demo disappears from the account’s library afterward.
Assuming developer deactivation is a local cleanup tool
Deactivation is controlled by the developer and affects whether the demo can be downloaded or launched. It is not a replacement for the player’s uninstall command, and it can leave an existing library entry visible even when the demo can no longer be used.
Searching only the default Library view
Hidden entries and active filters are the most direct checks when a demo seems to have vanished. Clear filters first, then use View > Hidden Games before concluding that the account no longer has access.

- Remove an installed copy with the exact path Library > right-click demo > Manage > Uninstall.
- Uninstalling is a local cleanup operation, while developer deactivation controls whether the demo can be downloaded or launched.
- If the entry is missing, clear filters and check View > Hidden Games before troubleshooting further.
