There is no single water or electricity figure for every desert air cooler: consumption depends on the model, its settings and operating conditions. For electricity, multiply the cooler’s rated watts by hours of use and divide by 1,000 to estimate kilowatt-hours (kWh). For water, look for a manufacturer’s litres-per-hour figure. Tank capacity tells you how much water the reservoir holds, not how quickly the cooler uses it.
How to estimate electricity use
Use this formula:
Electricity use (kWh) = rated power (W) × hours of use ÷ 1,000

For example, a cooler rated at 150 W is 0.15 kW. At continuous full rated input, eight hours of operation would use 1.2 kWh (0.15 × 8). To estimate the electricity cost, multiply that kWh figure by your own price per kWh. This is an estimate based on rated input, not a guarantee of actual consumption; selected speed and operating setup can affect use.

How much water example models use
Some manufacturers publish an hourly water-use rate, but it is not available for every model. The figures below are product specifications, not independent comparative test results or an average for desert coolers.
| Manufacturer | Model | Electrical input | Stated water use | Tank capacity | Conditions or caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symphony Limited | Siesta 70 XL | 150 W | Not stated on the cited product page | 70 L | Manufacturer says product information is under standard lab conditions; stated for rooms up to 34 m². Product page |
| Evapoler | WK-55N | 250 W | 3–4 L/hour | 50 L | Manufacturer product specifications. Product page |
| Evapoler | WK-50K | 200/180/160 W across three power settings | 4–6 L/hour | 45 L | Manufacturer product specifications. Product page |
Check the exact product listing for its specifications and any stated conditions before comparing models. These examples show why a single rate should not be applied to every cooler.

Unlike traditional portable air conditioners, this windowless cooler fan requires no hose or window installation—just plug in and enjoy refreshing airflow instantly. Perfect portable ac units for rooms, bedrooms, apartments, offices, and dorms.
- Powerful Cooling with Triple Air Intake & 6 Speeds——Designed with three-side air intake and upgraded air duct circulation, this air cooler portable delivers fast and powerful cooling airflow up to 8m/s. The widened front air outlet enhances airflow coverage and creates stronger whole-room cooling performance. Choose from 6 fan speeds and 2 wind modes (Normal/Natural) for customized comfort.
- 12L Removable Water Tank for Long-Lasting Cooling——Equipped with a large 12L detachable water tank, this air cooler for room provides extended cooling performance while making cleaning and storage easier than traditional swamp coolers. The removable tank design helps reduce storage space when not in use, making it ideal for compact apartments or seasonal use.
- 7 Mist Modes & 9 Ambient Lighting Effects——This evaporative air cooler features 7 adjustable mist modes for added cooling and humidity comfort. Built-in 9-color ambient lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere for bedrooms or gaming rooms. Dynamic light and mist synchronization enhances the cooling experience while adding modern style to your space.
Tank capacity is not hourly water consumption
A 50 L or 70 L tank describes reservoir storage; it does not say how many litres the cooler uses in an hour or guarantee a fixed run time. Where an hourly rate is published, refill frequency depends on tank size and actual water consumption. Do not divide capacity by a guessed rate and treat the result as guaranteed operating time.

A desert cooler uses direct evaporative cooling: air passes through a wet filter pad, and evaporation removes heat. The Bureau of Indian Standards guide describes this process and identifies power use, energy efficiency, sump capacity, air delivery, noise and electrical safety as relevant considerations: Bureau of Indian Standards.

India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency says direct evaporative cooling, commonly called a desert cooler, brings outdoor air into contact with water and is useful in hot, dry climates. Its efficiency depends on outdoor dry-bulb temperature and relative humidity: Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Consider local humidity and ventilation alongside power and tank size when deciding whether this type of cooler suits a room.
Quick Recap
What to compare before choosing a cooler
- Electrical input: compare watts and note the speed or test conditions attached to the rating.
- Water-consumption rate: use a litres-per-hour figure only when the manufacturer provides one.
- Tank capacity: treat litres as storage, not consumption.
- Air delivery and room suitability: check the manufacturer’s stated airflow and area guidance.
- Climate fit: account for local humidity, because it affects evaporative-cooling efficiency.
