Record the exact release, format, set information and physical location so you can find a case, check whether you own a title and keep track of discs that are loaned or unwatched.
Choose a shelf order your household can remember
Use one consistent rule for putting cases away. A single alphabetical sequence is a low-friction choice. If you prefer separate DVD and Blu-ray sections, alphabetize each one. You can also group by franchise, genre or director, but choose a rule people will apply consistently and record locations in the catalog.

For a franchise or box set, decide whether to file it under the collection name or the first film’s title. Either can work; consistency matters more than the specific choice. Leave room for new additions or use movable dividers so one purchase does not require reorganizing the entire shelf.
Record the release you own, not just the movie title
The same film may appear in different formats, editions and packages. A useful record identifies the item on your shelf, rather than simply noting that you own the film. Include these details where your catalog supports them:

Catalog the collection without losing track of shelf locations
Work through one shelf at a time
Enter cases in place, moving shelf by shelf. This preserves their current locations while you build the catalog and avoids mixing cases into a pile whose original order is hard to reconstruct. Add the shelf or location to each record as you go.

Confirm that the app or software is convenient where you need to consult it and that its filters cover the fields you care about.
