For U.S. adults, the federal target is 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Brisk walking can count. You can also meet the aerobic target with 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent mix of moderate and vigorous activity. If you are starting from little or no activity, begin with a manageable amount and build up.
How many minutes of walking should adults aim for?
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition recommend that adults get 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, or a combination that adds up to an equivalent amount. These are weekly totals, not a requirement to walk every day.

For a walking routine, 30 minutes of brisk walking on five days adds up to 150 minutes. That is one convenient way to reach the lower end of the moderate-activity range, not a special federal schedule. The guidelines encourage spreading aerobic activity across the week.

Yes. The federal guidance names brisk walking as an example of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. “Brisk” describes effort, not one required pace: the guideline does not set a universal walking speed. Choose a pace that feels purposeful and sustainable for you rather than trying to match someone else’s speed.

Vigorous activity is another way to meet the aerobic recommendation, but it is not required. The weekly targets and the option to combine intensities are summarized in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion’s overview of the guidelines.
| Activity intensity | Weekly target for adults | How it applies to walking |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate | 150–300 minutes | Brisk walking is an official example. |
| Vigorous | 75–150 minutes | The guideline provides this alternative target; it does not require vigorous walking. |
| Combination | An equivalent mix of moderate and vigorous activity | You can combine intensities rather than meet the full target in only one category. |
Do walks have to last at least 10 minutes?
No. Under the second-edition guidance, activity counts toward your weekly total even when it is done in shorter bouts; it no longer has to be accumulated in sessions of at least 10 minutes. A short walk is still a useful contribution, especially if it helps you fit more movement into the week.

How should you build a walking routine?
- Start with what feels manageable. If you are currently inactive, begin with a small amount of walking rather than trying to reach 150 minutes immediately.
- Add time gradually. Increase the duration or frequency as it becomes comfortable, working toward 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.
- Spread walks across the week. For example, five 30-minute brisk walks reach 150 minutes. Shorter walks also contribute to the total.
- Consider progressing further. If it suits your circumstances, work toward 300 minutes of moderate activity weekly; the guidelines say additional activity toward that amount brings further benefits.
The federal guidance emphasizes that “Some physical activity is better than none.” You do not have to begin at the full target for activity to be worthwhile.

Is there a daily step goal?
The cited federal recommendation sets goals in minutes and intensity, not a universal number of steps per day. It does not establish a step-count conversion that guarantees the same health benefit for every adult. If a tracker helps you notice or plan your walking, it can be a personal tool, but a particular device or step target is not required by the recommendation.

What else do the adult guidelines recommend?
In addition to aerobic activity, adults should do muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week. The Move Your Way Activity Planner translates the weekly aerobic and strength targets into a consumer-facing planning resource.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What health benefits are associated with meeting the target?
Federal guidance says adults who meet the aerobic activity guideline can gain substantial health benefits. It describes lower risks of premature death, coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and depression, with further benefits from additional activity toward 300 moderate-intensity minutes per week. These are population-level benefits, not a promise that walking will prevent a particular condition for an individual.

For context, Healthy People 2030 reports that 48.0% of U.S. adults met the minimum aerobic physical-activity guideline in 2024, based on the National Health Interview Survey from CDC/NCHS. That figure describes the U.S. population in 2024; it is not a global estimate or a measure of any one person’s health.

When might you need more tailored guidance?
The weekly targets are broad U.S. adult guidance, not an individualized clinical plan. The federal guideline identifies separate considerations for older adults and for people with chronic conditions or disabilities. If you need advice tailored to your health or abilities, seek appropriate clinical guidance rather than treating the general target as a personal prescription.
