Check toe room, midfoot hold and heel security, then match the shoe to your routes and the kind of runs you do. Neither brand’s guidance establishes a universal size conversion between them, so try the exact model if you can.
Start with the run, not the logo
First decide where you run and what the shoe needs to do. Road trainers, road-racing shoes and trail shoes are built for different surfaces and sessions. Adidas advises considering surface, cushioning and support; trail shoes, for example, need traction and protection suited to uneven ground. Nike’s running shoe finder also sorts options by road running, road racing and trail running. See the adidas running-shoe selection guide and Nike’s Japan running shoe finder.

- Everyday road miles: Look for a comfortable fit and a ride you would want to use for routine training.
- Tempo or faster sessions: Consider shoes presented for speed or tempo work; these may prioritize a different ride from a relaxed daily trainer.
- Trail running: Compare outsole grip and protection for the terrain rather than choosing a road model based on brand or cushioning alone.
- Race day: Compare shoes intended for racing with the needs of your event and your comfort in the specific model.
How should Nike and adidas shoes fit?
Assess the shoe on your foot, not by its size label alone. Adidas recommends room for the foot to expand in the toe box, support through the midfoot and a heel that does not slip; it also notes that upper construction can change how a shoe feels. Nike’s India fit guidance suggests about a thumb’s width between the big toe and the end of the shoe as a general check. These are practical starting points, not guarantees that a particular model will fit you.
- Check toe room: Stand in the shoes and make sure your toes have space rather than being pressed against the front.
- Check midfoot hold: The shoe should feel secure without uncomfortable pressure.
- Check the heel: Walk or jog a few steps and notice whether the heel slips.
- Try the exact model: Different lasts, uppers and constructions can feel different, even within one brand. Do not assume a Nike size will translate directly to adidas, or vice versa.

Which brand has more cushioning?
There is no useful brand-wide winner: both brands sell shoes with different cushioning approaches. Compare the feel of the particular models. Adidas describes less cushioning as offering more ground feel, while more cushioning can add comfort and energy return but may also make a shoe heavier and place the foot higher off the ground. “Maximum,” “responsive” and “supportive” are brand categories, not standardized tests for comparing products across manufacturers.
- Prefer ground feel? Try a less-cushioned option and check that the ride remains comfortable for your intended runs.
- Prefer a softer or more cushioned feel? Try the model at the pace and on the surface where you expect to use it; cushioning labels alone do not tell you whether its ride will suit you.
- Comparing specs? Look at weight, stack height and heel-to-toe drop for the specific model and version. Adidas defines drop as the difference between cushioning height at the heel and forefoot, and stack height as midsole height. Its guide gives general examples, not a matched Nike–adidas model comparison.

A practical way to make the final choice
- Choose the category that matches your route and session: road, trail, daily training, speed work or racing.
- Try candidate shoes in the size that fits each model, checking toe room, midfoot hold and heel slip.
- Compare cushioning by feel and by the shoe’s intended use; do not treat more cushioning as automatically better.
- Compare model-specific weight, drop and stack height when those details matter to you, keeping the version and size basis consistent.
- If a shoe feels uncomfortable or unstable, try another option. Persistent concerns are a reason to seek qualified advice, rather than to select a brand or support type based on a diagnosis from a shoe guide.
