How Much Upload Speed Do You Need for YouTube Livestreaming?

YouTube upload needs depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. Compare recommended stream bitrates with approximate speeds that leave 20% headroom.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single upload-speed number for every YouTube livestream. Match your connection to the stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate, then leave capacity for other network traffic. YouTube recommends 20% headroom for a single stream; for locally sending separate streams to multiple platforms, it recommends upload capacity 1.5 to 2 times their combined target bitrates.

Start with the bitrate YouTube recommends for your stream

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrates, not internet-plan speeds. The approximate upload targets apply a 20% headroom allowance: bitrate divided by 0.8, rounded to the nearest Mbps. They are calculations from YouTube’s recommendations, not separate YouTube-published speed requirements. Audio uses additional bandwidth.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 video bitrate Approximate upload target with 20% headroom AV1/H.265 video bitrate
720p30 or 720p60 8 Mbps 10 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 17 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 21 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps 26 Mbps 15 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps 41 Mbps 24 Mbps
4K/2160p30 42 Mbps 51 Mbps 30 Mbps
4K/2160p60 50 Mbps 60 Mbps 35 Mbps

Use the column matching the codec your encoder actually sends. For example, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for H.264 1080p60; “1080p speed” is not one fixed figure. YouTube lists 128 Kbps stereo audio in its advanced encoder settings, which is extra traffic beyond the video bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

How to calculate your own upload-speed target

  1. Choose the broadcast settings. Decide on resolution and frame rate, then identify whether the encoder sends H.264, H.265 or AV1. The recommended video bitrate varies with those settings.
  2. Find the matching bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommended value for that exact combination. Do not substitute the advertised download speed of your internet plan.
  3. Leave headroom. For one stream, divide its target video bitrate by 0.8 (or multiply by 1.25) as a practical way to leave 20% capacity unused. Add room for audio and for other people or applications uploading on the connection. YouTube’s guidance is: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube’s streaming tips also explain the headroom recommendation.
  4. Measure upload, not download. Run a speed test on the same connection and at a time and location representative of the broadcast. Download capacity is often higher than upload capacity, so a fast download result does not establish that the stream has enough outbound bandwidth.
  5. Test the actual setup. Stream a preview with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Check the preview and stream-health messages before going live, then keep monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube advises testing before a broadcast because a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

These targets assume the measured upload capacity is actually available to the encoder. If a household member starts uploading files, a cloud backup runs, or the connection is congested, the stream may have less capacity than the speed test suggested. YouTube’s network and testing guidance specifically calls out shared bandwidth and realistic testing.

How much upload speed do you need for 1080p?

For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps of incoming video bitrate at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. With 20% headroom, the corresponding approximate upload targets are 17 Mbps and 21 Mbps. Those figures do not account for other active uploads on your network, so leave additional capacity if the connection is shared or variable.

If your encoder sends AV1 or H.265, YouTube’s listed video bitrates are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Use the recommendation for the codec actually selected rather than assuming all 1080p streams require the same bitrate.

How much upload speed for 4K livestreaming?

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 42 Mbps for 4K/2160p30 and 50 Mbps for 4K/2160p60. Applying 20% headroom gives approximate targets of 51 Mbps and 60 Mbps, respectively. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding video recommendations are 30 Mbps and 35 Mbps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube notes that low-latency optimization is unavailable at 2160p/4K; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings for the codec and resolution details.

What changes when you stream to multiple platforms?

If your local encoder sends a separate outgoing stream to each platform, add the target bitrates together. YouTube’s example is two streams at 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps: the combined target is 10 Mbps, for which YouTube recommends 15–20 Mbps upload speed, especially on a shared connection. In general, YouTube advises aiming for 1.5 to 2 times the sum of the outgoing target bitrates. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.

This calculation is for local simulstreaming, where your encoder sends each stream out over your connection. YouTube distinguishes that from a cloud relay arrangement, in which a service receives one high-quality feed and redistributes it. The upload calculation at your location can differ with a relay; assess the service’s own plan and reliability rather than treating local multi-output arithmetic as its requirement.

Settings and connection details that affect stream stability

  • Protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
  • Encoding: YouTube supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
  • Available bandwidth: Other people and apps using the connection can reduce the upload capacity left for the stream. Retest under realistic conditions if the connection is shared.
  • Reliability: A high peak speed is not enough if upload capacity drops or the connection is disrupted. Test before the event and watch YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health information during the broadcast.
  • Equipment: Buying a camera or encoder does not create more ISP upload capacity. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; the key issue for this question is reliable outbound bandwidth. Its livestreaming tips suggest beginning with a test stream.

Common upload-speed problems and fixes

  • The download test is fast, but the stream buffers or drops. Run an upload speed test. Download and upload capacity can differ substantially.
  • The stream works during a quiet test but fails during the event. Retest while other household users and applications are active, or reduce competing uploads. Keep capacity beyond the stream’s target available.
  • The selected speed target does not match the stream. Check resolution, frame rate and encoder codec, then use the corresponding YouTube bitrate. A 1080p60 H.264 stream has a different recommendation from 1080p30 or AV1.
  • The speed test looks adequate, but stream health is poor. Repeat a test using representative audio and motion, check the preview, and monitor Live Control Room stream-health messages. A single speed-test result cannot guarantee stability throughout an event.
  • You send separate streams to several platforms. Add every outgoing target bitrate, then use YouTube’s 1.5–2× upload guidance for the combined total; do not size the connection for only one destination.
