Independent reporting from AllThings.how (2026) puts the plausible preparation range at roughly 150–200 GB, based on comparable Rockstar releases and other reporting. That is a planning estimate, not a confirmed requirement. Reserve more than the upper end if possible, because the console may need temporary working space for the download, installation, updates and system data.
GTA VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s store listing gives November 12, 2026 as the scheduled pre-load date and November 19, 2026 as the release date, so storage checks should happen before pre-load opens.

The number to plan around: 150–200 GB, but it is not official
The most defensible answer to “How many GB will GTA 6 be?” is that nobody outside Rockstar can give a final number yet. The company’s reviewed support, game and store pages do not publish an install-size figure for GTA VI. The 150–200 GB range reported by AllThings.how in 2026 is an independent estimate, not a Rockstar specification.
Use that range as a preparation target rather than a promise that the game will occupy exactly 150, 175 or 200 GB. A final package can be smaller or larger, and the free space needed to download or unpack it can differ from the size of the files left after installation. Patches, language assets, saved data and console operating-system overhead can also affect the amount of space available when you start the download.

A practical rule is to make at least 200 GB available for planning and leave additional room beyond that figure. The extra room is a buffer, not a published GTA VI requirement. Rockstar has not stated the temporary staging requirement, the day-one patch size or the final console-specific free-space figure.
What is confirmed about platforms, dates and the physical edition
Launch platforms
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms. The reviewed official material does not announce a PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC version for this release window. Storage advice therefore applies to the current-generation consoles named by Rockstar.
Pre-load and launch dates
Rockstar’s store listing schedules pre-load for November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19, 2026 launch. Dates can change, so check the store page attached to your account when the pre-load window approaches. The important preparation point is to clear space before November 12 rather than waiting until launch day, when download demand and troubleshooting can make delays more likely.
A boxed copy still requires a download
The retail package is not a traditional game disc containing the complete install. Rockstar Customer Support states: “The physical version of GTAVI will contain a code that can be redeemed for the digital download of the game to support pre-load.” In other words, buying the physical edition does not remove the storage or internet requirement. You will redeem the code, download the game and keep enough local console storage for the installation.

How much free space should you reserve?
Think in three separate amounts instead of treating one headline number as a guarantee:
- Final installed size: the space occupied after the game and its required updates are installed. Rockstar has not published this number.
- Download and installation workspace: temporary room the console may use while receiving, verifying or unpacking files. Rockstar has not published this number either.
- Everyday console headroom: space needed for system data, screenshots, captures, saved games and future patches for other titles.
The 150–200 GB estimate concerns the likely scale of the game, not a measured free-space requirement for a particular console. If your console has only a little more than 200 GB free, deleting one or two games may not be enough once temporary files and system overhead are considered. Aim to have a substantial cushion above 200 GB, then re-check the exact requirement when the official store listing exposes it.
Preparing a PS5
Check internal storage before pre-load
On PS5, open the console’s storage settings and review the free space shown for console storage. Remove games you can re-download, move compatible content to another drive, and clear unused captures before November 12. Do not delete saved data casually: game installations and save files are separate items, and a space-clearing operation should target the installation or media categories you no longer need.

Keep the console connected to power and a reliable network during pre-load. If the listing later shows a size above your available space, make room before starting; pausing halfway through a large download does not eliminate the requirement for installation workspace.

Use a compatible M.2 SSD for playable expansion
Sony’s PS5 documentation says a compatible M.2 SSD can expand storage and can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 games. The documented interface is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, with supported capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB, subject to the console model, physical dimensions, speed and heatsink limits.
For shoppers who need meaningful headroom, the useful search description is a 1 TB PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink. That wording is not a guarantee that every product fits. Verify the exact PS5 model, the drive’s dimensions, the required read-speed specification and whether a heatsink is included or must be added. A drive that has the right capacity but fails Sony’s physical or performance requirements cannot be used as a PS5 game library.
Install the drive according to Sony’s model-specific instructions, format it when the console prompts you, and confirm that it appears as usable PS5 storage before moving a large game. An M.2 drive is the appropriate expansion type when the goal is to play GTA VI from added storage rather than merely archive it.

Sony states that PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. A USB drive is still useful for moving older games out of the internal drive and keeping an archive, but a PS5 game must be copied back to console storage or to a compatible M.2 SSD before you can launch it.

That distinction matters for GTA VI. A USB drive can help you clear the internal drive by storing other games, but it is not a way to install GTA VI once and run it directly from USB. If you buy external storage for this purpose, treat it as a transfer and archive device and retain playable space on the console or M.2 drive.

Preparing an Xbox Series X or Series S
Rockstar confirms Xbox Series X|S support, but the official sources reviewed for this article do not publish a GTA VI size or identify a specific Xbox expansion-card model. Do not assume that a particular third-party drive will run the game until Microsoft’s compatibility guidance or the game’s store listing confirms it.
Before pre-load, open your Xbox storage-management screen and identify games that can be uninstalled or moved. Keep track of which items are installed internally and which are on an expansion device. When the Microsoft Store listing reveals the actual GTA VI download size, compare that figure with the free space on the target drive and leave room for installation overhead.
Xbox Series X|S storage products are not interchangeable by assumption. A drive that works as general USB storage may not run an optimized Series X|S game directly. Wait for the official listing or Microsoft documentation to identify the supported expansion method for GTA VI, rather than buying on capacity alone.

A pre-load preparation checklist
- Check the console platform. Confirm that you are preparing a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, because the announced launch platforms are current-generation systems.
- Check free space now. Record the available storage and target at least the 150–200 GB planning range plus additional headroom.
- Remove or move low-priority games. Prefer installations you can download again. Preserve save files and captures you still need.
- Choose the correct expansion type. On PS5, use a Sony-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD for games you intend to play from expanded storage. Use USB storage only for archiving and transfers.
- Verify the store listing when pre-load opens. The listing should provide the current download information on your platform; use that value instead of relying on an estimate.
- Start before launch day. Pre-load is scheduled for November 12, 2026, while release is scheduled for November 19. Starting early gives the console time to download and install and leaves time to resolve a storage error.
- Keep update room after installation. Do not fill every remaining gigabyte with other games immediately. Future patches can require free working space even after the base installation succeeds.
Common storage problems and how to handle them
The console says there is not enough space
First compare the free-space warning with the amount shown in the game listing. If the warning demands more than the advertised download, the console is likely accounting for installation workspace or existing system data. Uninstall additional games, move archive content, empty unneeded captures and retry. Do not interpret the warning as proof that the final installed game will occupy the same larger amount permanently.
The physical copy does not start an installation
Because the physical edition contains a redemption code for a digital download, check that the code was redeemed on the intended account and that the console is online. The boxed product does not provide a complete disc-based install that bypasses the download.
The game is on a USB drive but will not launch on PS5
This is expected behavior for PS5 games. Copy the installation to internal PS5 storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, then launch it from that playable location. USB extended storage remains useful for holding other games while you make room.

On PS5, re-check the M.2 drive’s interface, capacity, physical dimensions, speed and heatsink against Sony’s requirements for your console model. On Xbox, wait for the official compatibility information instead of forcing an unconfirmed device into the role of a game expansion drive.
Why the final number may change
Large open-world games often contain high-resolution assets, multiple language packs, audio files and online components, but those general factors do not establish GTA VI’s actual size. Rockstar may compress files differently, offer optional content packs or publish a patch that changes the download. The reviewed official pages also do not state whether one platform’s package will match the other’s size.
That is why the 150–200 GB range should remain clearly labeled as an estimate. The authoritative number will be the platform-specific listing shown when pre-load becomes available, together with any installation-space message displayed by your console.
Bottom line for your storage plan
Plan for a game in the 150–200 GB class, but do not treat that estimate as a confirmed GTA VI requirement. Make more than 200 GB available where possible, verify the exact listing when pre-load begins on November 12, 2026, and keep additional room for installation work and updates. On PS5, a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD is the expansion option that can run PS5 games directly; USB storage is only an archive and transfer route. On Xbox Series X|S, wait for Microsoft or the store listing to identify the supported expansion hardware before buying a specific drive.
