Buy GTA VI if you want a character-driven, open-world crime adventure and are happy to wait for its November 19, 2026 console launch. Buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 if you want military-shooter action, competitive multiplayer, DMZ extraction gameplay, PC or Nintendo Switch 2 support, or campaign access from October 16 with a qualifying digital pre-order. The right choice depends less on which game is “better” than on how you play, where you play, and when you want to start.
GTA VI vs Modern Warfare 4 at a glance
These are fundamentally different purchases. GTA VI is built around exploring one connected crime world as Jason and Lucia. Modern Warfare 4 is a military shooter organized around a campaign, competitive multiplayer and DMZ extraction play. Release timing, platform support and purchase format may matter as much as genre preference.

Release dates: do you want to play in October or November?
Modern Warfare 4 arrives first
Modern Warfare 4’s general release is Friday, October 23, 2026. Players who make a qualifying digital pre-order or pre-purchase can begin the campaign on October 16, one week earlier. That is the clearest reason to choose it if you need a new game before GTA VI arrives.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Early access applies to the campaign, not automatically to every mode or every platform entitlement. Check the exact edition and storefront language before paying, because the eligibility condition is specifically a qualifying digital purchase.
GTA VI is the later launch
Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 for GTA VI. That date applies to the documented PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. The official materials reviewed here do not announce a PC release date, so a PC-only buyer should not assume that the November date includes a Windows version.
Waiting for GTA VI gives you a later, console-focused launch rather than an earlier way into the same type of game. If you are deciding between buying one game now and saving for the other, Modern Warfare 4 is the available October option; GTA VI is the November option.

How the games actually play
GTA VI: one large world to investigate
GTA VI follows Jason and Lucia in the state of Leonida. Rockstar describes them as partners who know the odds are against them; after an easy score goes wrong, they become entangled in a criminal conspiracy and must depend on each other. The premise points to a story-led adventure in which travel, discovery, missions and character relationships happen inside a shared open world.
Choose this structure if you prefer setting your own pace. You can spend time moving through the world, following story missions, or simply exploring between major events. The appeal is continuity: the environment is the main stage, rather than a series of separate combat maps.
Modern Warfare 4: directed missions plus repeatable modes
Modern Warfare 4 begins with a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. Its campaign follows young South Korean soldiers and Captain Price through a conflict involving former allies, enemies and a catastrophic weapon threat. The campaign is the directed, mission-based part of the package, with the military setting and combat pacing that define the series.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Outside the campaign, the game includes competitive multiplayer and DMZ extraction play. That gives it a broader repeat-play loop than a purchase made only for a single story. Multiplayer matches are built around competing against other players, while an extraction mode adds the risk-and-reward cycle of entering an area, collecting objectives or gear, and trying to leave successfully.

Pick GTA VI for exploratory, single-player-first play
GTA VI is the stronger fit when your main requirement is a large story world that you can explore at your own rhythm. Its central promise is the relationship between Jason and Lucia and the criminal conspiracy spreading across Leonida. The official description makes the story and setting the selling point, not a competitive mode.
This does not mean every GTA VI detail is known. The reviewed material confirms the premise, editions and launch platforms, but does not provide a complete mission count, campaign length or detailed technical specification. Buy it for the type of experience described—an open-world crime narrative—not for unannounced features.
Pick Modern Warfare 4 for a focused military campaign
Modern Warfare 4 suits solo players who prefer tightly directed combat missions, contemporary military stakes and a faster route through a campaign. Captain Price and the Korean conflict provide the narrative frame, while the broader package lets you move into multiplayer or DMZ when the story is finished.
A campaign-focused buyer should examine the edition’s early-access terms rather than assuming that every pre-order receives the same access. The official update ties October 16 access to qualifying digital pre-orders or pre-purchases.
Multiplayer and long-term play
Modern Warfare 4 is the clear multiplayer choice
Activision confirms multiplayer and DMZ alongside the campaign. That matters if you expect to play with friends, compete online, or return to a game repeatedly after completing its story. The package is designed around multiple modes rather than a single campaign-only purchase.

The available information does not establish a complete multiplayer map list, progression system, live-service schedule, monetization model or PC requirements. Do not treat the existence of multiplayer as proof of any particular feature set beyond the modes officially announced.
What the GTA VI materials establish
The reviewed Rockstar store and support pages focus on GTA VI’s story, editions and platforms. They do not provide a confirmed multiplayer feature list in the material used here. If online play is your deciding factor, Modern Warfare 4 is the safer purchase based on the explicitly announced modes; do not buy GTA VI on the assumption that a specific online offering will be available at launch.
Platform compatibility: the choice may already be made for you
If you play on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S
Both games are documented for current-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Your decision can therefore be based on genre, timing and modes: open-world crime and a November launch for GTA VI, or military campaign, multiplayer and DMZ with an October launch for Modern Warfare 4.

If you play on PC
Modern Warfare 4 is officially announced for PC. The reviewed GTA VI materials do not confirm a PC release date. A PC-only player should therefore choose Modern Warfare 4 if they need a game with documented PC availability, and wait for a separate Rockstar announcement before treating GTA VI as a PC purchase.
If you own a Nintendo Switch 2
Modern Warfare 4 has a confirmed native Nintendo Switch 2 version. Activision says Digital Legends is developing that version, while Beenox is supporting PC development and Infinity Ward is leading the project. GTA VI is not listed for Nintendo Switch 2 in the reviewed official materials.
If you own only PlayStation 4 or Xbox One
Modern Warfare 4 is not compatible with PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, according to Activision’s announcement. The GTA VI materials reviewed here document PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions, not older-console editions. Owners of either older generation should verify any future platform announcement before purchasing; neither game is established here as an older-console release.

Physical versus digital buying
GTA VI’s “physical” box has no disc
Rockstar confirms both digital and physical versions of GTA VI, but the physical version is a code-in-box product. The package contains a download code and no disc. That distinction affects resale, lending, offline installation expectations and storage planning.
The support information says the code is intended to support pre-loading from November 12, one week before the November 19 launch. Redemption is subject to region and account restrictions, so a boxed code bought for one market may not work with an account registered in another.
Rockstar’s store lists standard and Ultimate digital editions, pre-order bonuses and a displayed $79.99 pre-order price for the product page shown. That figure is tied to the displayed edition and storefront; it should not be treated as a universal price for every region or edition.
Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed for pre-order, but details vary
Modern Warfare 4 is available for pre-order across its announced platforms. The reviewed official announcement and campaign update do not provide a complete comparable price table or specify whether every retailer’s physical offering uses a disc, a code, or both. Check the listing for your platform, region and edition before ordering.
If campaign timing is the reason you are pre-ordering, confirm that the product is a qualifying digital pre-purchase. The October 16 early-access date is not presented as a benefit for every possible physical or non-qualifying order.
Which game should you buy for your priorities?
Choose GTA VI if these statements describe you
- You want an open world rather than a sequence of military missions.
- Your priority is a character-led crime story featuring Jason and Lucia.
- You mainly play alone and value exploration and cinematic presentation.
- You own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You are comfortable waiting until November 19, 2026.
- You understand that the boxed edition is a download code without a disc.
Choose Modern Warfare 4 if these statements describe you
- You want a military shooter set around a Korean Peninsula conflict.
- You need confirmed PC or Nintendo Switch 2 support.
- You want campaign, competitive multiplayer and DMZ extraction in one package.
- You want to play before November and may use campaign early access.
- You own a current-generation console, PC or Switch 2 rather than PS4 or Xbox One.
- You are buying for regular sessions with friends or repeatable online play.
Wait instead of pre-ordering when information matters more than timing
- You need GTA VI on PC and are waiting for an official PC date.
- You need a physical disc specifically; GTA VI’s boxed version does not include one.
- You want a confirmed price, storage requirement or detailed performance target that the reviewed announcements do not state.
- You are considering Modern Warfare 4 solely for campaign early access but have not verified that your digital edition qualifies.
Should you pre-order Modern Warfare 4?
Pre-order it when the October 16 campaign start has real value to you, your platform is confirmed, and the digital product clearly qualifies for early access. The seven-day head start is the concrete benefit announced by Activision; it is especially useful if you want to finish or sample the campaign before the general October 23 release.
Best Value
- Join the revolution as Dani Rojas and liberate your nation from Anton Castillo's oppression.
- Dive into a blockbuster experience and immerse yourself in the journey of a guerrilla revolutionary.
- Explore the largest open world in Far Cry history, including the first ever sprawling urban city.
- Discover new animal companions like Chorizo, the adorable wiener dog, to take down enemies.
- Unleash the firepower of specialized makeshift weapons and new backpacks to use against Anton's troops.
Do not pre-order merely because the game includes multiplayer and DMZ. Those modes are confirmed, but the available announcement does not establish the complete content schedule, technical requirements or pricing structure. If you can wait, buying after launch lets you verify the exact edition and platform listing without giving up the October date’s appeal.
Does GTA VI justify waiting?
It does if your preferred experience is a new Rockstar open-world crime story and you already own the required current-generation console. The Jason-and-Lucia premise, Leonida setting and November 19 date give you a defined reason to wait rather than treating the game as a generic action title.
Waiting is less compelling if you need PC or Switch 2 support, want competitive play immediately, or want to start a campaign in October. In those cases, Modern Warfare 4 matches the documented platform and timing requirements while GTA VI remains a future console purchase.

Bottom line: GTA VI or Modern Warfare 4?
Buy GTA VI for an open-world, story-first crime adventure on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, provided you can wait until November 19 and are comfortable with a boxed download code instead of a disc. Buy Modern Warfare 4 for a military campaign that arrives October 23, campaign access from October 16 with a qualifying digital pre-order, and confirmed multiplayer, DMZ, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 support.
Neither choice is a substitute for the other: GTA VI is the exploration-and-story purchase, while Modern Warfare 4 is the modes-and-early-access purchase. Match that distinction to your platform and play habits before you place the order.
