How Much Storage Does Nintendo Switch 2 Need? Choosing a microSD Express Card

Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage, but expansion requires microSD Express. Here’s how to choose between 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB cards.

Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some of that capacity reserved for system use. You may not need an expansion card immediately: it depends on how many downloadable games and add-ons you want installed at once. If you do expand, buy a microSD Express card—regular microSD cards used with the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games. For many owners who want a larger installed library, 512 GB is a sensible middle choice; 256 GB suits a lighter library, while 1 TB may suit a large one.

What storage can Switch 2 use?

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2 and notes that system use reserves part of that capacity, so not all 256 GB is available for games. Nintendo’s April 2025 specifications describe the internal storage as the place where digital games and save data are stored.

For expandable storage, Nintendo says Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards and supports compliant cards up to 2 TB. A standard microSD card that worked with the original Switch is not a substitute for installing or playing Switch 2 digital games. The first time you use a microSD Express card, the console requires an internet system update. See Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and microSD Express FAQ.

Is 256 GB enough?

It can be, if you buy mostly physical games, keep a modest digital library, or are happy to archive games you are not currently playing and download them again later. It may feel tight if you want many large digital games installed at the same time. Storage needs depend on your own library rather than a reliable average game size: individual titles vary widely, and updates or editions can change their requirements.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

As examples rather than a general rule, a Tom’s Guide article published July 9, 2026 reported 60 GB for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, 90.5 GB for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and 3.8 GB for Blue Prince. Those figures are publication-reported sizes at that time, not permanent specifications. Check the individual game’s official software page or packaging for its required space; Nintendo says storage requirements are listed there in its physical software guidance.

How much expansion capacity should you buy?

Choose based on the digital library you want installed simultaneously, your budget, and how willing you are to archive and download titles again. These are practical recommendations, not Nintendo requirements.

  • NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
  • EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
  • DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
  • 256 GB: A smaller expansion for a modest digital library or for someone comfortable managing installed games. SanDisk lists this capacity in its officially licensed Switch 2 card range.
  • 512 GB: A useful middle choice if you want room for more digital games without moving to the largest listed capacity. SanDisk offers this size, as does Lexar’s Play Pro line. Tom’s Guide’s July 2026 article describes one reviewer’s use of the Lexar 512 GB card; that individual account is not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of results.
  • 1 TB: Consider this for a large digital library or if you want to archive and redownload less often. SanDisk and the cited Tom’s Guide article list 1 TB options.
  • Up to 2 TB: This is Nintendo’s supported ceiling for compliant microSD Express cards, not evidence that a particular 2 TB retail model is available. Verify a specific card’s standard and current local availability before buying.

SanDisk’s manufacturer data sheet lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB cards and estimates space for 9, 18, and 36 games, respectively. Those are manufacturer estimates, not a promise for every game or the usable capacity of every owner’s console. See the SanDisk product data sheet.

Which microSD Express card should you buy?

Start by confirming that the exact card is microSD Express, then compare capacity, current local price per usable gigabyte, seller reliability, and warranty terms. Do not assume a card is compatible just because it is a microSD card or because it worked in an original Switch. The available product examples include SanDisk’s officially licensed Switch 2 card and Lexar Play Pro microSD Express. TechRadar’s buying guide names SanDisk its best overall pick and PNY a budget option, but that is an independent editorial ranking, not Nintendo certification; rankings and stock can change. No current price comparison is established here, so check live listings in your region before choosing between capacities or models. Tom’s Guide’s July 2026 review reports hands-on use of a Lexar 512 GB card, but its performance observations are the reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every compatible card will make games load faster by a fixed amount. What goes on the card—and what does not?

When a microSD Express card is inserted, Nintendo says it becomes the default save location for downloadable software. Downloadable games, updates, and DLC can be stored there. Game save data cannot: it stays in System Memory and cannot be copied or saved to the card. Screenshots and captured videos can be stored or moved between internal storage and a microSD Express card.

Lexar 512GB Play PRO Micro SD Express Card, 900MB/s Read, 4K, V30, UHS-I
  • The perfect card for the Nintendo Switch 2 delivers revolutionary performance that is 4x faster than typical UHS-I microSD cards
  • PCIe technology delivers read speeds up to 900MB/s so the game loads faster
  • Write speed up to 600MB/s deliver accelerated download speeds when paired with the Lexar microSD Express card reader
  • Level-up your handheld gaming experience with next-gen tech
  • 1TB microSD Express card offers more space for your favorite games

A regular microSD card previously used with an original Switch can still help import captured screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory, but it cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. This distinction matters if you already own an older card: it can have a limited media-transfer use, but it does not expand Switch 2 game storage.

How to avoid storage problems later

  • Plan for one card. Nintendo recommends using a single microSD Express card. Downloadable software on multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.
  • Move to a larger card if you run out. Nintendo’s guidance is to copy the data to a larger microSD Express card rather than splitting a library across cards.
  • Check each game’s space requirement. Look at the relevant software page or package, especially for large titles and games that receive updates.
  • Keep expectations about saves clear. Buying a larger card gives you more room for software and media, but game saves remain in System Memory.
