Plan from the recording’s total average bitrate and how long you will keep it—not resolution alone. As a useful decimal estimate, storage in GB ≈ total bitrate in Mbps × recording hours × 0.45. At 1 Mbps around the clock, that is about 10.8 GB per day before overhead. Include audio, extra recorded feeds or renditions, and any duplicate backup copies in your estimate.
Estimate storage from bitrate and retention
The formula estimates media payload in decimal gigabytes. It is arithmetic, not a measured education-stream benchmark. Actual files can vary with bitrate behavior, container and filesystem overhead, and recording settings, so add practical headroom rather than sizing a drive to the exact result.

Example: 6 Mbps video plus 160 Kbps audio
Convert audio to Mbps: 160 Kbps is 0.16 Mbps. The total recorded bitrate is therefore 6.16 Mbps. At continuous recording, the estimate is:

Choose a bitrate that reflects the actual recording
Use the recording system’s actual average bitrate, including audio. A streaming platform’s ingest guidance can help with planning, but a local recording may use different settings or a different codec. Resolution by itself does not tell you how large the file will be.
Official settings are references, not universal recorder limits
YouTube’s H.264 live encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. It also advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. YouTube Help: live encoder settings (current page accessed October 3, 2026).

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best-practices table lists 8 Mbps H.264 or 7.2 Mbps H.265 for 720p25/30, and 20 Mbps H.264 or 15 Mbps H.265 for 1080p50/60. Check the material students need to see
A lower bitrate reduces storage use but may reduce visual detail. For lessons, test whether slides, small text, handwriting, demonstrations, and motion remain clear at the chosen setting. If possible, record a representative sample and measure its file size or average bitrate. That is more reliable than inferring storage from resolution alone.

Size a recording archive step by step
- Set the retention period. Decide how many days or months recordings must remain available before deletion or archiving.
- Find the total average bitrate. Include audio. If it varies, use a representative recording or the recorder’s measured average rather than a peak or a resolution label.
- Calculate media size. Multiply total Mbps by recording hours by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB.
- Account for separate copies and feeds. Multiply for distinct renditions, isolated camera feeds, or backup copies stored for the same period.
- Add headroom and check usable capacity. Leave room for overhead, recording variation, and operating needs. Drive manufacturers label capacity in decimal units, while some operating systems display binary units, so reported usable capacity may appear lower.
- Include cloud-specific needs if applicable. Plan for storage class, retrieval, and any additional rendition or metadata requirements. Amazon IVS documents a cloud recording path that writes recorded media and metadata to an S3 prefix; this establishes a workflow, not its price or suitability for every organization. Choose local storage or cloud archive based on use
A high-capacity external hard drive or NAS drive is a direct fit when recordings will be retained locally. Choose capacity only after calculating bitrate and retention, then compare usable capacity, read/write workload, warranty, and whether you need off-site protection or team access.
Cloud object storage can suit off-site archives or shared access, but compare storage and retrieval costs against how often recordings will be accessed and how long they will be kept. The appropriate choice depends on the organization’s retention and access pattern; no specific drive is established as tested or endorsed here.
