Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Modern PC games do not share one storage requirement. The official examples covered here range from 40 GB for Palworld to 115 GB for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 at launch. Some games require an SSD, while others support a hard drive at minimum settings but prefer an SSD for better performance.
Use each game’s current “available space” figure as a planning baseline, not as a promise of its final installed size. Add the requirements for the games you want installed simultaneously, reserve room for updates, and check that your PC supports the SSD’s interface and form factor before buying.

What a game’s storage requirement actually tells you
A system-requirements listing normally reports available space: free capacity the installer expects on the target drive. It is a requirement for that specific game, edition and configuration. It is not an industry-wide estimate for every modern game, and it does not guarantee that the installed folder will remain the same size after patches, downloadable content or launcher changes.
The figure also should not be read as a precise measurement of the download. Installers can unpack files, replace older files and create temporary data while an update is applied. A drive that has only the exact listed amount free may therefore fail during installation or patching even when the published requirement has not changed.

Launch specifications can change
Activision’s official PC requirements for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 say, “Additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates.” The same notice says, “Specs are valid for product launch and may be updated in the future.” That qualification applies to the 115 GB figure in the table below: it describes the launch listing, not a lifetime cap.
SSD required versus SSD preferred
Storage capacity and storage type are separate decisions. “SSD required” means the publisher lists a solid-state drive as part of the supported requirement. “SSD preferred” indicates a faster drive is recommended, while the minimum configuration may still support a hard disk drive (HDD). A game that merely fits on a drive can still perform poorly if the drive type does not match its stated requirement.
Published PC game requirements compared
The following figures come from official publisher or platform listings. They are published requirements, not a controlled measurement of the final installed folders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Game | Published available space | SSD status | Configuration and date notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 | 115 GB | SSD | Minimum, recommended and competitive/ultra 4K PC specifications at launch; Activision, 2025. Mandatory updates may require more space and specifications may change. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 70 GB | SSD required | Minimum and recommended requirements on the Steam/CD PROJEKT RED page checked in 2026. |
| Palworld | 40 GB | SSD required | Minimum and recommended requirements on the Steam/Pocketpair page checked in 2026. The listing states, “SSD Required – Performance may vary depending on the amount of active Pals.” |
| Hogwarts Legacy | 85 GB | SSD preferred for minimum; SSD required for recommended | The minimum listing says “SSD (Preferred), HDD (Supported).” The recommended listing specifies an SSD. Steam/Warner Bros. Games requirements checked in 2026. |
| Rainbow Six Siege | 65 GB for several configurations; 110 GB for 4K/120 fps ultra | SSD required | Ubisoft requirements updated August 3, 2026. The higher figure applies to the 4K/120 fps ultra configuration. |
These examples span a wide range without establishing an average modern-game size. A 40 GB requirement is not evidence that most games are that small, and a 115 GB requirement is not a ceiling for future releases or updates.

Why two games can need very different amounts of space
Games package different combinations of environments, audio, video, language files, texture quality and optional content. A title with several high-resolution asset sets can occupy more space than a game with fewer or more compact assets. The graphics preset in a requirements table can also matter: Ubisoft lists 65 GB for several Rainbow Six Siege configurations but 110 GB for its 4K/120 fps ultra configuration.
Optional downloads can alter the amount you need after the initial install. Extra language packs, high-resolution texture packs, campaign modules or other downloadable content may be separate from the base requirement. Read the installer’s current details rather than assuming that the number on the minimum-specification line covers every optional component.
Platform and edition matter as well. A PC listing can differ from a console listing, and a revised edition can use a different asset set. When you are planning a purchase, use the current PC requirements for the edition and launcher you intend to use.

- List the games you want installed at the same time. Include large titles you regularly return to, not only the game you plan to play this week.
- Record each game’s current PC requirement. Check the publisher or platform page on the day you plan the purchase. Note whether the number applies to a particular graphics mode or edition.
- Add the listed requirements. This gives you a baseline for the simultaneous library. Do not treat it as the final amount of free space you should have.
- Set an update reserve. Leave additional capacity beyond the sum so a mandatory patch or temporary update files do not fill the drive. The sources do not establish one universal percentage or number; your reserve should reflect how often you update and how difficult it is for you to move or uninstall a game.
- Add non-game storage. The operating system, applications, user files, recordings, mod files and launcher caches also occupy the same drive. A game-only calculation can overstate how much capacity is available for games.
- Check usable capacity and compatibility. A drive’s advertised capacity is not identical to the free space shown after formatting and system data. Confirm the PC’s supported interface, physical form factor, available slot and power or enclosure requirements before ordering.
Worked examples using the published figures
| Games installed together | Arithmetic from listed requirements | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Black Ops 7 alone | 115 GB | This is the launch baseline for one large title. It excludes future mandatory-update space and everything else on the drive. |
| Black Ops 7 + Hogwarts Legacy + Cyberpunk 2077 | 115 + 85 + 70 = 270 GB | A three-game baseline before update room, the operating system and personal files. |
| The previous three plus Palworld and a 65 GB Rainbow Six Siege configuration | 270 + 40 + 65 = 375 GB | The listed requirements alone reach 375 GB; the 4K/120 fps ultra Siege configuration would raise this arithmetic total to 420 GB. |
Those sums illustrate why a drive that comfortably meets one game’s requirement may be inconvenient for a library. They are not recommendations for a particular drive size: you still need room for updates and other PC data.
What 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB capacities mean in practice
Capacity labels are useful only when tied to an assumed library. The following guide uses the published examples as planning anchors rather than declaring one size necessary for everyone.
| Capacity class | Likely fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| About 500 GB | One or two large games, or a larger set of smaller games, provided other files are kept elsewhere. | The 270 GB three-game example leaves less headroom for updates, the operating system and personal data than a larger drive would. The usable space is below the nominal label after formatting and system use. |
| About 1 TB | A mixed library containing several large games plus applications and personal files, depending on how many titles remain installed. | It can still fill quickly if you keep multiple 85–115 GB-class games and their optional content. Recheck the current requirements instead of assuming a fixed game count. |
| About 2 TB or more | A larger always-installed library, extensive optional content, or a PC that also stores recordings and other large files. | Higher capacity costs more and does not solve an interface or slot incompatibility. You still need update headroom and a plan for backups. |
There is no evidence in these requirements for a universal “gaming size.” Someone who rotates through one title can need far less capacity than someone who keeps ten large games installed. Decide how many games you want available without redownloading, then size the drive around that behavior.

SSD or HDD: what the listings imply
When an SSD is mandatory
Cyberpunk 2077, Palworld, Rainbow Six Siege and the listed Black Ops 7 configurations specify an SSD. For these games, meeting the capacity number with an HDD does not meet the published storage-type requirement. An SSD can also reduce loading delays and asset-streaming bottlenecks compared with a mechanical drive, but the decisive point here is the publisher’s stated requirement.

When an HDD is still listed as supported
Hogwarts Legacy is the clearest example of a split requirement: its minimum settings list “SSD (Preferred), HDD (Supported),” while its recommended settings require an SSD. If you use an HDD for the minimum configuration, expect the trade-offs associated with that lower-tier requirement and check the current listing for changes.
Internal versus external storage
An internal SSD is the straightforward choice when the PC has a compatible slot or drive bay. An external SSD can be useful when internal expansion is unavailable, but it is conditional: the PC, operating system and launcher must support installing and running that specific game from the external device, and the connection must deliver stable performance. Treat external storage as a compatibility question, not an automatic substitute for an internal upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility checks before you buy an SSD
Game requirements establish how much space you need, but they do not identify a universally compatible SSD model. Confirm these details in your PC or motherboard documentation:
- Interface: Determine which storage connection the system accepts. An SSD using a different interface may not work even if its capacity is sufficient.
- Form factor: Check the physical size and mounting style, such as the type of internal slot or drive bay available.
- Available slot or bay: A desktop may have an open slot, while a laptop may require replacing an existing drive or using an external enclosure.
- System limits: Firmware, operating-system support and the manufacturer’s documented maximum capacity can affect installation.
- Budget: Compare capacity value against how many games you actually keep installed. Paying for unused capacity is not a performance requirement.
If you cannot identify the interface and form factor, pause before ordering and consult the PC manufacturer’s service manual or the motherboard’s storage specifications. A retailer’s capacity label cannot resolve a physical incompatibility.

How to keep enough free space after installation
Check the listing immediately before purchase
Requirements are snapshots. Activision explicitly warns that its launch specifications may be updated, and the other platform listings can also change. Open the current PC requirement page for each major game in your planned library before finalizing the drive size.
Track the largest installations first
When the drive starts filling, sort installed games by size and review optional content. Removing a single large title can recover more space than deleting many small utilities. Keep save files backed up according to the game’s support guidance before uninstalling.
Use library-location features deliberately
Most PC launchers let you choose an installation library on another internal or external drive. Moving a game can preserve the download while freeing the original SSD, but verify that the destination meets the game’s SSD requirement and that the launcher supports the move. Do not assume that copying a folder manually will update the launcher’s library record.
Do not run the drive at its limit
A nearly full SSD leaves little room for patches, temporary installer files and ordinary system activity. The exact reserve is personal because update sizes and library habits differ, but the principle is fixed: capacity planning must include more than the sum printed in the system requirements.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using one game’s number as a universal rule: Requirements in the published sample range from 40 GB to 115 GB, so extrapolating from one title is unreliable.
- Confusing available space with installed size: The listing is a prerequisite for installation, not a guarantee of the final folder size or future patch needs.
- Ignoring configuration differences: Rainbow Six Siege lists 65 GB for several configurations but 110 GB for 4K/120 fps ultra.
- Buying by capacity alone: Interface, form factor and slot availability determine whether the drive can be installed.
- Forgetting non-game files: The operating system, applications and recordings compete for the same free space.
- Assuming an external SSD always works: Support depends on the PC, launcher, game and connection; confirm those conditions first.
A simple decision rule
Choose the smallest compatible SSD that satisfies your actual library plan: add the current listed requirements for the games you keep installed, include a reserve for updates and temporary installation work, then add space for the operating system and personal files. If that total is close to the drive’s usable capacity, move up to the next capacity class or plan to store some games elsewhere. Recheck the requirements whenever a major edition, graphics mode or mandatory update changes.
