Official U.S. listings and announcements in 2026 range from $24.99 for one game’s Standard Edition to $69.99 for other titles’ Standard or Deluxe Editions, with higher tiers reaching $99.99 or more. Those examples are not a market average: the right price for you depends on the specific game, platform, edition, extras, and any costs that continue after purchase.
What do new video games cost?
Recent U.S. examples show why a single “normal” price can mislead. These are publisher-announced prices or individual storefront listings, not a representative survey of the market; prices can change and retail prices may differ.

| Game and source | Edition and price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Towerborne, Xbox Wire | Standard: $24.99; Deluxe: $29.99 | Announcement prices for the premium full-game launch on February 26, 2026. The announcement also said the game was available through Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. Xbox Wire described the full game as a “premium, one-time purchase experience”; these are not necessarily current store prices. Xbox Wire |
| NBA 2K27, 2K | Standard: $69.99; Deluxe: $99.99; Ultra: $149.99 | Publisher-stated suggested retail prices in 2026. The Ultra price was a limited-time offer through September 6, 2026, so that offer window has passed. 2K says actual retail prices may vary. 2K Newsroom |
| PRAGMATA, PlayStation Store | Deluxe: $69.99 | A U.S. PlayStation Store listing accessed October 3, 2026. The bundle includes the game and Shelter Variety Pack; storefront offers and prices can change. PlayStation Store |
| Grand Theft Auto VI, PlayStation Store | Standard: $79.99; Ultimate: $99.99 | A U.S. listing on one platform, accessed October 3, 2026, with a stated November 19, 2026 release date. It is not a universal price recommendation. PlayStation Store |
Use these figures as examples of variation, not a basis for judging every launch. Some are announcement prices, some are live storefront listings, and the NBA 2K27 Ultra offer was time-limited. 2K explicitly cautions that actual retail prices may vary; Nintendo also says retail partners set prices and that pricing may vary by title. How to decide whether the price is fair for you
Compare like with like: the same game, platform, format, and edition, at the same retailer and as offered on the day you plan to buy. Then evaluate what the price buys and how you expect to play. A high price is not automatically poor value, and a lower one is not automatically a better deal.

- Start with the base game. Check whether every edition includes the same playable game or whether a higher tier adds game content. Read the itemized listing rather than relying on labels such as “Deluxe” or “Ultimate.”
- Value only extras you will use. Separate gameplay additions from cosmetics and collectibles. An outfit, weapon skin, gesture, soundtrack, digital art, or early-access period may matter to one buyer and not another.
- Calculate the actual premium. Compare editions of the same title at the same retailer and time. The relevant question is not whether an edition sounds premium, but whether its named extras justify the difference to you.
- Include costs beyond the purchase. Check whether online multiplayer requires a separate paid subscription and whether any bundled subscription benefit renews automatically.
- Check the price’s status and date. Distinguish suggested retail price from a store’s current offer, a sale, or an expired promotion. Confirm the edition, platform, availability, and final price before paying.
Is a Deluxe or Ultimate Edition worth it?
Only if the specific additions are worth the extra amount to you. Edition names do not guarantee a standard set of benefits, so inspect the contents before deciding.
Example: PRAGMATA Deluxe
The U.S. PlayStation Store listing describes PRAGMATA Deluxe as the base game plus the Shelter Variety Pack. Its listed extras include outfits, a weapon skin, music, gestures, and artwork. This gives buyers an itemized basis for judging the bundle; it does not establish that the package is worth its price for every player. See the PlayStation Store listing

Compare editions on the details that matter
| What to compare | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Base game | Does each tier include the same playable game, or does a higher tier add game content? |
| Upgrade contents | Which specific extras will you use? Are they gameplay additions, cosmetics, or collectibles? |
| Price premium | What is the difference between editions of this title at this retailer right now? |
| Platform and format | Are prices or capabilities different for this platform or for physical and digital copies? |
| Ongoing costs | Does online play need another subscription, or will a bundled subscription benefit renew? |
| Timing and availability | Is the price current, suggested, promotional, or tied to an offer window that has ended? |
Should you buy physical or digital?
Compare the actual price and terms for the game, platform, and retailer rather than assuming physical and digital copies always cost the same. Nintendo says that from May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have a different MSRP from their physical versions. The company says the game experience is the same; the policy applies to those titles and that platform, not to all games or consoles. Nintendo Support: About Nintendo Switch 2 Game Pricing
That policy illustrates why format can affect sticker price without indicating a different game experience. For other titles, check the specific listing and retailer: Nintendo notes that retail partners set prices and pricing may vary by title.

Account for subscriptions and renewal terms
A game’s sticker price may not capture the full cost of playing it. A subscription catalog may change whether buying a game separately makes sense, while online multiplayer or a bundled membership benefit may introduce recurring charges. Compare the cost over the period you actually expect to play, and check the current terms rather than assuming a subscription is always cheaper.
